Good food, good vibe sahai chasni is my favourite dish at this restaurant. You will find a variety of indian dishes in the menu and the desserts as well taste quite authentic.
We visit regularly and have never been disappointed with the quality of the food or service. Some of the staff have been here for more than 10 years and go the extra mile to make customers welcome. Well worth a visit!
My love of curry comes from growing up along the East Coast of South Africa, and the strong Indian communities that thrive there. I love a tasty, spicy curry but not a hot curry as well as all the other delicious dishes There are so many varieties of curries, dhals, biryanis and in my opinion no-one does better vegetarian dishes than Indian cuisine.
I was delighted to receive an invite to go along and review Voujon. Word is that Voujon is pretty good. I’d agree but wonderful would be my choice of word.
Voujon is located on the south side of the city, Newington way. Its light and bright inside, with a lovely modern contemporary interior. The staff are superb. Friendly, efficient, helpful and just overall nice. But lets get onto the food. The menu is comprehensive offering a wide selection of starters, mains, vegetarian dishes, curries, fish and seafood, sides and breads.
DESPITE OUR LOVE of Indian food, Sarah and I are guilty of not branching out in search of rivals to our much-loved regulars Rivage and Desi Pakwan. Then again, when you know the food is always going to be top notch, why would you take this risk? Today presented an opportunity to take us out of our spice comfort zone when a trip to Voujon in Newington was arranged.
In typical SFR style we shall start this review with a bit of fun. In this case a cheeky word challenge. Can you guess the language of origin and meaning of these popular words?
Let's start with an easy one - Macho...

The vegetarian curries at Voujon were fantastic. I had takeawy from Voujon twice over the last month and was really impressed both times by how tasty they were. The curries I ordered weren't too spicy for me (but my partner who loves spice was happy with his ones) and they were pleasingly full of vegies and flavour. Voujon also do a great peshwari naan bread.
When I asked our waiter for the evening how long Voujon had been open in Edinburgh I was surprised to hear 12 years. Despite being a big fan of a good curry neither of us had heard of Voujon before being invited along last week. After sampling the food on offer I really can’t understand why this place has managed to escape our attention over the years.
Tucked away in Newington we visited midweek after work. The restaurant wasn't busy and we were a little worried had we made the wrong choice. It would seem that midweek most of their business is takeaway but this didn't delay our dishes at all. There is a wide range of dishes on the menu to appeal to all tastes. Thank goodness as I don't like terribly spicy food. I choose the Korma which had a little kick to it, making it full of flavour and a memorable dish. Sometimes with korma they can be bland in the dish is forgettable. The service was great and they offer us some space between each course to ensure we were ready for the next. We will definitely be back.
Voujon is a lovely Indian restaurant in Newington and a firm favourite with local residents. It’s easy to see why – with a varied menu and good food, it’s very hard to go wrong in a place like this. If you want a decent Indian meal in the area, then this is a very strong option!
Myself and Emma from Edinbug were invited by a PR company to try out Voujon. This modern restaurant is situated in Newington. The staff were welcoming and polite. We ordered some drinks whilst perusing the menu. There was a really good choice. I spotted a note on the menu offering a fusion menu on top of their standard a la carte offerings, which meant that you picked a dish and the chef picked the accompaniments, which is useful if you don’t know what to pair with what. However, in the end I went for the assorted kebab starter and Sahai chasni, which is sweet and sour curry, for main with a garlic naan. Emma went for annaj pakora and saag paneer with rice and chapatis. We also went for a poppadom each to get us going. Was this a foolish thing? I can’t usually manage poppadoms and a starter together.
The Silver Fox and I have recently had a wee bit of a curry revival, and so far have been rather impressed with the standard we've tried. A few weeks back we headed towards the South-side for dinner at Voujon. It was one of the first nights that you could
The last time we went to an Indian restaurant was Itihaas in Dalkeith. There I had a lovely lamb dish that I’d never seen before: lamb shatkora. Shatkora are Bengali citrus fruits with a strong, limey, bitter flavour. They are wonderful in savoury dishes and I was very excited to find shatkora on the menu of Voujon when we went there last week.
Voujon is a restaurant in Newington that specialises in Indian and Bengali food. The interior is fresh and open, with large windows at the front. We arrived early and had time for a gin and tonic, popadoms and pickles while we made our selection from the menu.
Starters
My starter was sardine bhorta, a fabulously flavoursome dish that I’d like to make at home. Sardines, cooked with tomatoes and spices, into almost a paste, it went beautifully with puri and would be great on sourdough on a Sunday morning. It was the kind of dish I immediately want to copy. It looked simple – although the spice mix was complex – and comforting. The picture doesn’t make it justice: yes, it was brown in colour, but it looked glorious against the cream-coloured bread.
C. started wit the voll puri, spiced chickpeas and potatoes, served with a fluffy puri. It was aromatic rather than hot, with a delicate sweetness. The puri was delicious, as it should be.
Mains
The lamb shatkora was very good. At Voujon they cut the citrus fruits into small pieces so you get regular little bursts of citrus flavour. It works well with the lamb and the almost smoky character of the sauce. There was a generous amount of tender lamb. We had rice and plain naan with the mains although, as usual, I focused on the lamb and sauce.
C. had sabzi sarisa, vegetables with mustard and green herbs in a sauce. It’s a medium strength dish, so not too hot, and went particularly well with the naan. It was midweek, and C. and I hadn’t seen each other for a few days. It was lovely to catch up, exchange news and have good, tasty food in comfortable surroundings.
Impressions
The service is friendly and attentive, the menu varied between ‘classics’ and more unusual dishes. There are some specials that I’d love to try, for example the Kulji lamb, a butterflied leg of lamb that serves four people. It sounds yummy.
There’s a private room in the back for larger parties.
We ordered take away from Voujon in our mission to find a good Indian restaurant that delivers in Newington. We have tried a fair few of the local ones and those that don't deliver and been generally disappointed.
I have to say Voujon was really really good - the curries all tasted different full of labours and a good level of spice. Great nan breads and a sensational prawn pathia starter. Wahay! Only problem was it took an hour to arrive and we were starving but it was worth it.
This place is a wee gem. Food amazing. Huge portions. Everything we had was so good. Lots of choices. Great service. Hot plates.
Wee negative place freezing when we arrived at 5pm. It slowly warmed up
We struggled to find an Indian restaurant that had availability and wow how lucky we're we!
The service and the food was excellent, the brilliant white table cloth, the beautiful plates and then to give us a hot lemon cloth to clean our hands after our meal, well that's the type of class you like to receive in a restaurant.
It was the first time we have ever been but it certainly won't be the last.
As always excellent meal, starters and main all excellent quality, 3 of enjoyed the meal. The service was warm, friendly and efficient. One of our favourite places to eat out.
Very good food and top Service.
Excellent food at a very good price point. Staff were friendly and helpful 😁 making sure our meal was an enjoyable experience. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Consistently fantastic food every time we visit. The Voujon is a warm and welcoming restaurant with an intimate atmosphere. Excellent decor, spotlessly clean and offers versitility for small or large parties.
For a starter, their kebabs, tandooried with sauce and salad is superb. We also love their poppadoms and pickle tray Every main we have eaten has been packed with flavour and fresh ingredients whatever our choice. And don't forget to order a nan. The Peshwari is the best I have eaten.
If you can't make it into the restaurant, they also deliver the same standard of food to your door. Final thing the staff are brilliant, friendly, attentive and nothing is to much trouble.
Came here from a recommendation from our hotel and boy were they right to send us here. The ambiance and the food and the waiters were so helpful. It's always busy so if I were you maybe best to book a table ahead if you are say a party of 4 plus as we were just a couple and had no issue coming in.
Really enjoyed my meal at this restaurant really nice flavoured food, well presented, very efficient and all for a good price we had starters, mains and rice for well under £20/person
Excellent Indian. Been our staple for well over a decade at this point. Extremely reliable and high quality food and the staff are all thoroughly lovely. Highly recommended.
Very authentic Bengali cuisine. Loved the starter of puri and prawns. Haven't had something so good for quite a while. All dishes were deliciously prepared and served with elegance.
