We enjoyed the tasting menu with the wine pairing. It didn’t disappoint. Each of the 7 courses was delicious with the foie gras with the gingerbread a highlight. The staff are attentive and friendly with a special mention to Fergus the sommelier and the lovely waiter who talked us through the additional cheese course. One of the best meals we have ever had. Thank you.

First time at this restaurant. Food and service excellent. Semellier choices superb. Is it as good as others - not sure. If you have a smart casual dress code then make sure that is what is the standard. It did not appear to be the case when we were there. If it is not then get rid of the code!

Food very classical michelin rather than contemporary. Nothing wrong with that. Exquisite taste.

Had a truly special meal to celebrate my university graduation. Enjoyed the whole experience, especially the little 'extras' we were given. Fresh bread was served and a trolley of petit fours came along after dinner! I highly recommend the lemon macarons! Very much enjoyed my main course of Wild Turbot with Cauliflower Puree. The atmosphere was laid back and yet still special. The waiting staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes. Appreciated their comments on the thinking behind some of the flavour combinations. Overall a 5 star night! 🌟 🍴

I went there with my family and it's an experience that will live me for a long time. It was relaxed dining of the highest quality. Everything was so tasty and the staff members handled everything very professionally and friendly at the same time. We had a very good experience and definitely recommend it for group celebrations.

I had a wonderful dinner last night with my husband. It is one of the finest restaurants in Edinburgh and I must honestly say it is worth paying any money for such a great experience. Everything from the moment we stepped in was spectacular. Elegant décor, very pleasant ambience and the highly skilled, friendly staff made our evening very special and romantic. And above all delightful food. Must try! Honest recommendation.

It certainly a great place to visit with family. I had a great experience on my family dinner this Saturday. The food was beautifully presented and nicely cooked. The ambience, food, attention to detail, staff were appreciable. Everything possible thing was done to ensure we had a meal to remember. Couldn't rate it highly enough! This was for sure the best restaurant which we have been in my life and I would definitely go back.

Number One is situated in the Balmoral Hotel and is decked out in semi-casual fittings. The pictures on the walls are all amgled bar one.. Curiousity. Keep your eye out for it. Tables are comfortable with sofas set opposite chairs for larger tables. The food is spot on, and I highly recommend the 7 course dinner for only £79. I think coffee/tea should be included at that price, alas it isnt. Cheese is optional as a pre-dessert for £13.50. But you probably wont't need it as Number One feeds you well. The wine list is very impressive with Mouton Rothschild or DRC by the glass. I was a little disappointed that the sommelier didnt come over to chat. Was my choice of a simple glass insufficient to warrent your time? The food is prepared spot on. The signature smoked salmon dish is impressive, as were the turbot and tomato salad. The hoggart was prepared very nicely too. The biggest issue is that the dishes arent explained well. I think it takes more then telling me hoggart is pork, when there was nicely caramelised pork belly too. The service is very friendly, and the waitress very pretty! Overall, I'd have no qualms recommending Number One.

#91 on the list? Should be in top 10. Don't usually enjoy hotel restaurants - usually overpriced and underperforming. NOT NUMBER ONE. What a great restaurant. The service was impeccable. The best service we had during a recent week's visit to Edinburgh. The food was glorious - fine French/Scottish fare. Beautifully prepared and presented. Everything we ate was first-class. The wine list was okay - expensive (it is in a hotel) but not overly expansive. Ambiance? Lovely. If you're in town - visit Number One.

BASED IN THE basement of Edinburgh’s Balmoral Hotel, Restaurant Number One has proudly held a Michelin star for 12 successive years.  Dressed in our Sunday best, we were caught by a nasty gust of wind and shower of rain as we gratefully escaped into the hotel from Princes Street. The warm surroundings were most welcome as the maître d took our coats and welcomed us to the restaurant. Spacious and tastefully decorated, I have to say I think it’s one of the most exquisite dining rooms in the city.  The rich, lacquered walls and quirky artwork almost lends a French-ness to it and I especially like how it’s carpeted, as it really keeps the volume of clattering feet down.  A lovely champagne aperitif was a perfect way to celebrate my *cough* 30 th *cough* birthday and made us forget the awful weather conditions outside. After devouring our wonderfully presented amuse bouché, it was starter time and I went for scallops with parsley root and cauliflower (this dish was kindly created for me du

What is on offer: There are some seriously good fine dining options in Edinburgh (The Kitchin, Castle Terrace, Angels & Bagpipes and Wedgwood to name a few). We can chalk up Number One at the Balmoral to that list as well. It has retained their Michelin star for the past 12 years; a testament to the cooking strength of the franchise behind the restaurant. Number One is probably the most classic of the aforementioned restaurants. The dining room is grand and the service attentive (the matching wines are superb), but above all the food is so moorish. One of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh. Total bill: £140 (including service charge and wine) The food rating:  9.5/10 The service rating: 9.5/10 The overall rating: 9.5/10 Tasting menu Amuse bouche Butternut squash (9/10) Butternut squash (9/10) Foie fras (9/10) Foie fras (9/10) Heritage beetroot (9/10) Heritage beetroot (9/10) Scallop and oxtail (9.5/10) Scallop and oxtail (9.5/10) Beef (9.5/10) Beef (9.5/10) Beef (9.5/10) Pre dessert

...at Number One, they have a “loaf trolley” and serve up world class bread baked on the premises by their Pastry Chef a former French Baker.

The Balmoral Hotel is an Edinburgh landmark. Built in 1902, it's grand in the old sense of the word, and imposing too. Topped off by a magnificent clock tower, the hotel dominates its surroundings in Princes Street. Unsurprisingly then, as a five star hotel, it would seek a restaurant to exude a similar quality and boast a star of its own, namely a Michelin star, and that restaurant is of course Number 1. With its own entrance on Princes Street, we proceed downstairs to the restaurant, and while the interior is classical and elegant, even sporting a few blinded windows above the banquettes on one wall, it can never fully escape the feel of being a basement restaurant which can often settle things there and then. The good news is however that the food is excellent and with service to match, those first impressions are not on this occasion lasting impressions. From the start, part of that recovery was the table at which we were seated: an expansive table for our party of four, affording

For a special occasion myself and my mum went in there for dinner as a treat. The decor is beautiful as the restaurant is laid out in a nice way. The staff were friendly enough but not overly helpful throughout the meal.

To start I had the scallops & chorizo, I wasn’t sure how it would taste but I was pleasantly surprised. My mum had the crab in a tomato and basil sauce for her starter. Then for the main I had the pork in a apricot sauce, I didn’t enjoy it that much as the sauce was a tad too sweet for me. Mum went for the beef which I tried a little bit of, it was very tender and was very tasty. We weren’t really in the mood for something sweet so we ordered the cheese selection for dessert. It had a great selection of cheese and crackers and was very nice.

I would definitely go back again but I would order something different for my main.

Number One is just the kind of place we want when we're celebrating a special occasion: delightful Michelin-stared dining in an elegant but not overly-snooty atmosphere. We've had the tasting menu twice and both times it hit the mark.

They are happy to tailor the menu to special dietary requirements, and the adapted dishes are no less glorious than the originals (at least in my experience with the vegetarian options). The only thing I don't like at Number One is the art on the walls, but it's easy enough to ignore that and instead focus on the art on the plates.

The food was beautifully presented and tasted great. The place is beautifully decorated and exudes solidity. The service was of the highest level from A to Z and leaves nothing to be desired. We enjoyed a wonderful evening at Number One, which was only possible thanks to the brilliant team. Many thanks again.

No doubt the tasting menu deserved a 5-star review. Simply covering a lot of culinary skills and phenomenal visual presentation in one meal. The only area I would suggest the restaurant improving was their tea storage conditions. I ordered a pot of tea at the end of the meal, but the tea leaves seemed not to have stored in air-tight container for a while and lost all their fragrance already. The restaurant did not charge for the tea as the server noticed I was not satisfied with it. Nonetheless, the meal by itself was meticulously executed. It only needed a bit more attention to other details to support the very talented kitchen team.

Fine dining at its best! Every dish is thoughtfully crafted, balanced, and divine. My husband and I dined here recently and were treated to an incredible 7-course meal. Scott and Keith took great care of us while we were here and we enjoyed chatting with the executive chef at the end of the meal, too. This is the perfect spot for a special occasion or for anyone who loves a fancy night out. Enjoy!

Beautiful decor and atmosphere. Extremely attentive, welcoming and helpful staff. Exceptional presentation and tastes. Definetly enjoyed the amount served to the point of being completely satisfied. One of the best meals I've had, and so far it edges out as the best Michelin star restaurant meal I've enjoyed thus far. Overall a beautiful experience that I would highly recommend anyone take in while in Edinburgh or even as the reason to make a stop over.

All 7 courses of our tasting menu were exceptional. The prestige wines that accompanied each dish were very good. The still white wines were served very chilled. Too cold in my view. I would have preferred 12C to 14C range to open up the aroma and flavour. As a digestive I selected the grappa. The bottle had been refrigerated. This should be served at room temperature. The staff were all very polite and explained every dish and wine perfectly. Well done.

Excellent. We had the tasting menu, and the kedgeree and the carrot pudding were particularly delicious. The sommelier knew his stuff and talked up the wine in the matched wine menu, and that definitely added to the delicious food. We were very impressed.

Michelin quality restaurant without the star. Easily a one star restaurant. Having been to multiple Michelin starred restaurants, one realizes the ratings are inconsistent and I use them only as a general guide. Price was reasonable for the quality and service. Tasting menu was great across the board. We didn't get the wine pairings but the couple next to us did, and the pours looked generous. Instead, we ordered a bottle of St. Emilion Grand Cru which was reasonable priced and were not disappointed.

This was a great restaurant, great service and very knowledgeable staff. The start, the sommelier was very knowledgeable about his wine and has a great selection of wines. We choose the 7 course tasting menu. We enjoyed each plate, some more than others but especially the chocolate truffle bomb and the beef. Would return again as the environment is relaxed and not rushed, service staff is very professional and the scotch bar above is great for after dinner drinks.

While on vacation, we wanted to try the tasting menu at Number One. Thankfully, they were able to accommodate my gluten allergy. We loved EVERY course. As Americans, it was a great way for us to taste local items. The dishes were equally scrumptious and beautiful. We've been to other Michelin starred tasting menus and this may be our favorite!

The food is as excellent as the service. Friendly and helpful staff cater to your every need and make the experience seem special. The menu is interesting and varied and provides a 3 course or taster menu. There is also a full vegetarian menu available on request. Extra touches like canapes, pre-cheese courses and mini desserts at no extra cost add to the occasion. It is obviously not cheap, but the quality of food and staff make it seem worth it.

Updated 2019 even better possibly one of the best tasting menus ever, oyster and lovage, scallop kedgeree still smiling. Original review - Its the little things. The tasting menu is a must, the matching wines if you enjoy are a lovely add on. The bread is always stunning but their gruyere loaf is simply divine, keep trying to duplicate it at home. Last visit I had a rack of lamb so tender it literally melted. The petits fours always tantalise.

Amazing food and service. I'd definitely recommend the tasting menu and the (super-knowledgeable) sommeliers matched wines. It all cost a small fortune, but it is definitely an experience and education worth having at least once in your life. The staff were incredible and the surroundings are great. The food was phenomenal.

So unexpectedly good! Had the best dinner of our trip here .. amazing atmosphere, unassuming staff but excellent service, and delicious food. We got the a la cart .. scallops were to die for, the pigeon was delicious; for dessert, def go with the strawberry over pinapple. So elegant and fresh.

Probably one of the best dining locale in Edinburgh. Excellent menu selection, great wine pairing and overall ambience was top notch. They anticipate your needs and pace the meal really well. Scallops, foie gras and halibut dishes excellent. Taste, balance and overall presentation spot on. If I had to find fault (which is difficult) I would say the desserts somewhat lacking. They felt rather over-engineered and hard to eat. Maybe it was just my selection. The petit fours at the end if the meal was good and made up for dessert so all's well! Note : I say "probably" the best only because I have limited exposure in Edinburgh. Would certainly repeat the next time in town.

Food was sublime. Lots of regional influences, rather fish focused. Wine pairing completes the experience.
