Easy to book online
On arrival and during the visit, the staff was great and couldn't do more for you asked.
The venue is small, so it got a canteen experience to it. Small tables, etc. So i didn't feel too comfortable being rammed, so close to the next table.
The food was quickly served. The wild bore mash meal was good!. But left a bit underwhelmed by the mash for the price of it.
The starters of scotch egg were amazing. The taste was deep and filling, and unarguably the best i have ever had. But 5 prices were highly inflated for what you got.
Overall, it was a good experience but wouldn't go back based on the price and the canteen vibe
Wow. A truly impressive eating experience. Service is superb, quick, attentive, unobtrusive but friendly. The food is even better. All of the dishes (inevitably) revolve around mash (which I love) and a range of meat and vegetarian offerings. We tried the haggis (perfect), lamb (sublime) and the boar sausage (delightful). Portions are generous but it’s worth leaving a little room for the deserts. The sticky toffee pudding is just perfect with a light sponge laced with dates. I’d make sure you book a table which is easily done through their website as inevitably this is a hot spot to eat out when in Edinburgh.
Can’t believe this place is fully booked and has a line outside at 3 pm. Overall the food is nice but it isn’t as impressive as expected from the reviews.
Mash tastes good indeed, especially the cheddar one. The beef shoulder and lamb shank are thought tender, though the lamb can probably have more lamb aroma.
Hope there were more green leaves in addition to the carrot slaw.
Food came quite slow. To be honest, none of the components need to be or can be made to order as they are slow cooked.
Service was a little tired. The young lady didn’t ask which mash we want and the size of the lager… and she has “no idea how long the food takes”.
Came here with my partner as we are in Scotland for her birthday. She suggested we go somewhere to get some real haggis. Found this place by doing a bit of investigating so we had to try it. Absolutely would recommend and will definitely be back next time we come up! I had the wild boar sausage with black pudding mash and she ordered the haggis with chilli mash, we ended up sharing the meals together and they were both absolutely unbelievable! Staff were attentive and friendly, the food was unreal and it's amazing to know that this place is an independent restaurant that sources all their product locally, including the drinks! Top job from all
Top place! I was impressed by the reviews and we went there around 17:30 without reservation, but they were so nice and we were seated almost immediately. The place was full and very cosy. Good quality of meat and all types of mashes. We’ve tried an egg and pork deep fried appetizer, then slow cooked beef and also the super famous Haggis and the amazing toffee pudding with melted butter and ice cream. This dinner cost us overall 50£ and was super delicious! Annie who served us was amazing, so polite, taking good care of us and gave us all the right food recommendations.
Eight of us catered to with ease. Great combo of meat and mash that catered for all tastes. Veggie options too. Little bit of luxury sprinkled on your comfort food. It was a cold wet day and we were a little early for our booking, but they got us seated as soon as they could. Booking recommended, it's a popular place and deservedly so!
Got to the restaurant and needed to wait 45 minutes. It was worth it. The over 4000 reviews at 4.8 stars lives up to its name 100%. The food was delicious, we had a scotch egg and the gammon with black pudding mash. I couldn’t recommend it more. The staff are super friendly and helpful with recommending the various mash options for your meat (or meat-free selection), and the walls downstairs are filled with great quotes. My wife & I shared the main and it was filling for sure.
As an added bonus, the bathrooms are really clean AND have free period care products!
I am skeptical of places in a touristy area that have such great reviews… but my friend booked reservations here and I am glad she did. It is basic Scottish food but good. My friend raved about the beef and her potatoes. I enjoyed trying a Scottish egg and the sticky toffee pudding was alright. It has a cool atmosphere as well. I think it is a staple place to go to. Our server Nickel was awesome!!
I had the haggis with black pudding mash. She had the lamb with cheesy mash. Honestly really nice food, but feels a bit pricey for what it is. Also would you please add a little bit more ice cream to the sticky toffee pudding!! (The picture doesn't do it justice but we both ran out of ice cream after 3 spoonfuls and the rest of the pudding was a bit dry without it)
We were trying Haggis for the first time and it was exceptional (both the beef one and the vegetarian one).
Definitely try the cheese mash. It was fantastic, and all the dish came together with the amazing sauce.
The broccoli was outstanding as well.
The staff were very kind and energetic which was nice.
Really recommend
I was there on a busy Sunday evening. The person organizing the queue was very helpful. I was able to be seated after a 45-minute wait using the cell phone notification system. The food was good. I enjoyed one of the mushroom dishes with the cheddar and sour cream mashed potatoes. Overall a great experience.
We ended up sitting outside because there was no indoor seating available. It was nice, although a bit breezy. The service was really good, and I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the haggis, scotch egg, sausage, and mushroom makars were!
I’d recommend booking. Portions are quite small for the price but the quality of food was incredible so I forgave them quite quickly! Ordered a side portion of broccoli and never thought I would enjoy vegetables ever in my life as much as I did those. Picture is of vegetarian sausage and cheese mash
This is a must stop when in Edinburgh! A great place for trying haggis or the vegetarian option! All our food was amazing and loved the many options of mashed potato! Really friendly staff who looked after us well and felt good to be supporting an independent restaurant! We didn’t have a booking but we’re lucky enough to get a table. It does get very busy though, would recommend booking in advanced if you can. The vegetarian haggis tasted so much better than I had imagined!!
I brought my family from overseas here and they are so impressed with the food and service. I booked online and requested the best seats and they gave me by the window. I don’t know the staff’s name, the lady with the short pink hair and tattoo is so attentive, quick, and friendly! Great service, although when I went (Sunday dinner) they were very busy.
They also lived up their name, the mashed potato was so smooth and tasty! Paired with flavourful gravy and well-rounded beef haggis, I’m so glad I came here. Keep up the good work👍🏻
It was my first time to try Scottish food, and I like the haggis dish. The overall taste is mild and the sauce is delicious. The sweet potato daily soup is also good.
It's definitely a classic given the cold weather. Food is nicely complimented by good options of wine and beers. You have to make reservations to avoid disappointment. Has good options for vegetarians and they can do kids meals.
Filling and delicious! Both the lamb shank and the beef shoulder were tender and flavourful. The mustard mash was a surprising hit — even better than the popular bacon & spring onion in our opinion. Slaw was fine, but it who goes to a mash bar for slaw?! Sticky toffee pudding was the perfect end - we made room for dessert after seeing it served to another table.
We dove right in with the full portion of haggis and discovered that we really like it. Best Scotch egg I've ever had: somehow they make it so it's not too heavy. Unfortunately they sold out of their homegrown lions mane mushroom, but the woodland mushroom was excellent. Get the sticky toffee pudding for dessert!
Clarkie was a great host and very considerate of our 2 year old.
We'll be back whenever we return to Edinburgh.
