Fantastic experience we booked for our anniversary. Food was amazing, so many different dishes with ingredients I wouldn't normally try - would definitely go back. The entire experience was around 2h so not a fast dinner out but it was great!
This was our second visit. We had the lunch menu plus the optional dish. The service was excellent and very informative about each course. The food is as good as we have had in any fine dining restaurant and at a reasonable cost. This is a special fine dining restaurant at a price that is more affordable to more customers. We wish the team our best wishes for the future.
Yet another excellent meal at Coarse. From the ham hock snack to the birthday cake dessert, everything was beautifully presented and tasted fabulous. The wine pairings again perfectly matched the food. The staff were as always friendly, informative and efficient.
This has to be the best food experience in Durham. The food was spectacular. Each course had great flavours and were presented beautifully. The staff look after your every need and make you feel special throughout the entire experience. 5 stars+ all the way.
I've lived in Durham City for many years and we've never had any so called 'top end' restaurants. We've now got Coarse which is great. I had the 3 course lunch and at £20 a head it's exceptional value for money. Each course was so tasty and the service was really good too. I visited on a random Thursday lunchtime and it was fully booked.
The best restaurant in Durham. Tasting/set menus only, but incredible value at £40, with great veggie options. Absolutely delicious. It is not a big space so booking essential. Well worth a visit if you’re in Durham
Recommended by a friend and he wasn’t wrong. Quiet when entered at 5pm, packed when we left at 7.30.
Simple tasting menu that wasn’t pretentious and you could actually taste each and every ingredient. Unbelievable value for money, £40pp for tasting menu plus £33 for pairing wine (we didn’t, so can’t comment)
Lovely staff, down to earth. 4/5 for atmosphere as restaurant itself is fairly basic and needs a little tlc. Didn’t bother us too much but I suspect would bother others.
We’ll be back.
This will be a critical review of the restaurant, so I just wanted to preface by saying that this is the best restaurant we have experienced so far in the Durham/Tyne & Wear area.
As far as the location is concerned, there is a definite desire from the people that run the restaurant to move elsewhere. When you have to walk down a bus station ginnel past a load of dumpsters, the experience doesn’t start well. However, the interior decor and the staff were both very nice.
The restaurant utilises the “tasting menu only” format, which minimises food waste and really captures the style and essence of the chef. However, the risk it poses is that restaurant-goers begin to rank their favourite courses which they wouldn’t otherwise do with a la carte. The children’s party food theme laced throughout the menu was really fun in my opinion, although some of the flavours weren’t fully balanced. The scallops too sweet and the venison finished a bit too salty. Our favourites were the Leek & Potato, Plaice and the Marshmallow.
Two of us at our table went gluten-free as they are coeliac, and the food was just as good. They thoroughly enjoyed the homemade gluten free bread and the croquettes. Certified must-visit for gluten free guests and/or Coeliacs.
Overall, we enjoyed our experience. The prices are very reasonable for a similar quality to Michelin-starred restaurants.
I challenge you to find a better lunch or dinner at this price. Seriously grown-up and delicious food, well cooked, with brilliant wine pairings. Service was attentive, friendly, professional and light-touch. Top notch. One of the best restaurant experiences I’ve had in years.
Relaxed warm atmosphere in surprising side street location. Service is fast and the staff are particularly knowledgeable about the wine. The beef was the highlight of the meal incredibly tender however it was let down by an awful pallet cleanser, tomato and ice cream should never be put together!
