Fab little hidden gem run by such lovely friendly staff. Highly recommend all the food and cakes are awesome. Not 5 star but 10 star totally yummy
Our favourite place to stop off for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Wonderful friendly staff. All food baked fresh on the premises. Fabulous assortment of show stopping cakes and homemade scones, tray bakes etc.
Well worth a visit. Lovely cosy downstairs seat if you have a dog. More seating upstairs. Outside a lovely outdoor seating area completes with throws to keep you warm on a chilly day, with views of the river.
Really lovely place, went with my two children who absolutely loved their chocolate brownie, cake and pot of tea to share...they are looking forward to coming back for another visit. My scone and latte was lovely. Great service too would highly recommend...thank you Katie we'll see you soon no doubt xx
Always enjoy going here when visiting my daughter. There is such a wonderful array of home baked cakes & scones which are absolutely amazing. They cater for my daughter who has coeliac disease & so can't eat gluten or barley& unlike most places they have several different cakes & even scones she can have as well as bread etc for the main meals. The lovely owner is so welcoming & friendly, keen to please and always finds time for a little chat. Our dog is even treated to a sausage or too. I highly recommend them.
Love this place, food is amazing and so is the staff. Went in with my family at the weekend and my little boy had a complete melt down, so while his daddy took him to get him off the girls were amazing and got colouring books for my little girl, took our order (we were sat upstairs) and even kept an extra eye on my little boy when his daddy came back with him asleep in the pram. Could not recommend them higher
First time I’ve been with my daughter today. What a lovely place and such nice employees. Would highly recommend this place. So many cafes around but this definitely deserves a mention. Dogs aloud too. We will be back.
Had a lovely afternoon tea it was amazing and well worth the money, lovely and friendly staff i would highly recommend a visit,we will definately be goin again
I had the pleasure of enjoying an afternoon tea here recently. The sandwiches were fresh and delicious, the cakes were the usual deliciousness but the scones were the best I've ever had. I would highly recommend you call for the scones alone.
Called in after a walk around the river between Elvet and Framwellgate bridges ... last here bout 20 years ago :-)
By far the best quality/quantity/value combination in Durham!!
Add to that very friendly and efficient service... we will definitely be back ... can highly recommend the soup and sandwich combo !! Give it a go... you will not be disappointed :-)
The next bake off star !!!
We stumbled upon this secret diamond, a charming cafe off from the high street for respite coffee, whilst on our New Year's Eve break away to the area. All the delicacies were baked in house, and were of a fantastic value given size, cost and taste.
The staff were attentive and kind, allowing our four legged friend in to the down stairs seating area. The warm homely decor felt like a home from home.
We wish the new management every luck with there venture. We will be back !
Delicious cake and coffee, all the food looked amazing. The service and friendly staff made my day. Highly recommended
Superb place to eat. Family run business and dog friendly.
Outstandingly good in my experience - the full English breakfast is a great deal. Also the coffee is good along with the significant portion sizes with the cakes. They do some gluten free stuff and are dog friendly too!
Lovely little quaint cafe in the heart of Durham City UK. Very friendly and attentive staff. Lovely food and coffee. Would highly recommend this to anyone visiting the city. 4 stars given as, I would recommend that the senior member of staff should not get tied up behind the counter as they should be able to interact with the customers front of house.
Excellent small cafe on a side path by the river. Excellent value for money, especially breakfasts. It has a cosy rustic atmosphere, always busy. The staff are lovely and location is perfect. It is located down a flight of stairs so may not be suitable for wheelchair users.
Amazing deals for a full English and coffee in the morning. The cakes are huge but while impressive, usually means they're very dry. This may depend on how long they've been on display, but I've had 2 bad experiences.
Lovely little cafe in a great location. Fantastic staff and good range of food available- I always follow whatever they recommend. Very small but very pretty upstairs or if the weather's good you can enjoy the river view without feeling like you're too much in the centre of town.
Lovely, small independent cafe. Food was very reasonable and tasty, the reasonably quick and friendly. One of the few places in Durham you can sit outside to eat lunch next to the river. Well worth a visit.
I love this little restaurant, the food is freshly made and very tasty. I asked for a plough mans but it was not on the menu, not a problem they made it for me. Yum yum yum.
The staff are polite and always willing to help, the outdoor seating area is small but has really beautiful views of the river. I now frequent this place every time I'm in durham... Just so nice.
Best scones and service in Durham. A real treat for visitors and regulars. Ideally located on the walkway up to the Cathedral. Cosy and welcoming on the inside. Highly recommend for morning and afternoon tea!
Excellent cafe with a great selection of teas and coffee and amazing cakes. Their food is good, and they do a wonderful cooked breakfast. The prices are unbelievably cheap.
Cosy little cafe which we stopped in for lunch. Had their 2 person afternoon tea which was great value and huge, we couldn't finish it between 3 people! Service took a little while but the staff are really friendly and the good was good. One thing to note is that it's cash only.

Very nice atmosphere and food. Very impressed with the service as well.
Lovely quaint little cafe. Good choice of food even for coeliacs (gluten free diet). Large servings and very friendly staff. Look forward to coming again
This little coffee shop rocks. The girls just make scones, cakes, full-English brekky, panini's & good coffee - all day. No lounge music, no pretensions, just real food. Especially good scones
By luck we stumbled on 9 Altars and had a cheap tasty breakfast. We didn't sample them due to being full from breakfast but the cakes looked amazing, probably home made and the portions were enormous.
Called in yesterday while spending the day in Durham and what a great start to the day! Excellent food, great value and outstanding service. Will definitely be calling back. Peter and Yvonne
