Prince Gastronome. The Old School, and I don’t believe this is a reach, is probably built out of an old school. I know, contain your bewilderment. Like everything in Skye, it probably changed functions a dozen times. I think half the buildings in Scotland, or at least Skye, were once a church or a school at some point. Now they’re either B&Bs or restaurants. Not that The Old School resembles anything you could imagine a school looking like from your youth. What it’s now is a truly exceptional dining experience blessed with great food and an unmatched rustic charm. I’ve been told that The Old School is by far the best restaurant in all of Dunvegan, and I believe it...Trip Advisor only lists three restaurants in town and one of them is a bakery. What I’m saying is that this town isn’t particularly large. Given Skye’s population density, if you are not from Portree, you’re from Dunvegan, and Portree only has about 10,000 people. Maybe Dunvegan is Gaelic for “resume speed.”
After checking our coats, we found our tables and began our experience. Across from us, etched on a chalkboard, were the starter specials. We decided to partake in the local wine. We each had a glass of the Sangiovese Rubicone Azienda Vinicola Archiue 2011...yeah, that sounds local. While my girlfriend enjoyed a cold duck salad, I tackled the seared scallop and black pudding. As for the mains, we both ordered the Scottish beef strips pan-fried and served in a black pepper, mustard and white wine sauce with tagliatelle. There was not one part of this meal we didn’t enjoy, and we wanted to enjoy more of it, but once again on this trip the courses were so generous, we couldn’t squeeze in dessert. With $12 starters and $26 mains, the meal wasn’t cheap, but grading on a curve, it was inexpensive as the best restaurant in town. And at least this time I was able to actually leave a tip. The service deserved it.
What else could I take from our experience at The Old School? For one, if I take the other patrons as a representative random sample from the Dunvegan population, the median age sits somewhere about 106. Two, I hope parking directly in front of their doors is allowed since roads in Skye have no shoulder and the lot next to the restaurant holds probably four vehicles. The Old School is not only the best place to eat in Dunvegan, it could possibly be the only place. Our road trip through Skye was probably one of the top ten best experiences of my life, promoted into the top five with the inclusion of my recently acquired girlfriend, a statement I should reword because honestly, it’s not like she’s a legendary card in a booster pack of Magic The Gathering...well, in the most romantic way, she kind of is. Off topic. So if driving around the perimeter of Skye, stopping in Dunvegan is just something you have to do. So call The Old School ahead and make your reservation because it’ll be required unless you want to eat a vacuum sealed sandwich next to a field of stacked stones.
By the way, our waiter was totally not Scottish. I felt robbed.

We sat outside and had the fish & chips, fish pie, and mixed seafood platter. All really delicious and a lovely way to finish off the day. All the seafood was really fresh and the batter on the fish was really crispy. The chips were well cooked too - crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. The fish pie was delicious with salmon, haddock, potato, cheese and flaky pastry. The smoked salmon in the seafood box was super fresh! It was so delicious, we even ordered another fish and chips to eat which was even bigger and more crispy than the first order.
Simply said: great food, great people and always feels cosy! The menu is not very big food wise, but everything on there is of great quality and the portions are large. They also have a black/white board with daily changing specials. You can/should book a table if you want to eat in the restaurant. Second option is to drink in the bar side of the building. Or third option us to take away you food (if they are fully booked). A small parking space, but enough room on the street to park your car close by. Main meals are around 20, starters and desserts 5-10 pounds.
I popped in to make a reservation for Sunday lunch. No reservation needed for Sunday lunch, just turn up.
I looked at the take away menu whilst I was there and decided to order.
I chose the chicken wrapped in bacon with pepper sauce, roasted new potatoes and mixed vegetables.
It was divine, so delicious. The chicken was succulent. The pepper sauce tasted amazing. The roasted potatoes and veg were really good too, perfect accompaniment to a perfect dish. And the price was really good too. Well worth £12.50
I’m really looking forward to tasting the Sunday roast.
The photo is 3/4 of the meal, I saved a bit for later.
Was recommended by the cabin owner we were staying with, so made a reservation (a must!) and settled in for some good, heart and tummy warming nosh. And boy, was it! Service was brilliant, led by the indomitable Cath; we wanted to order quite a bit but we relied on her advice and went with the mussels for starters and the fish pie + langoustines for our mains. With space for the sticky toffee pud. What a meal! The mussels in white wine were divine and I had the best fish pie in all of our UK trip! The mash was gorgeously browned and packed with generous chunks of fresh and smoked fish. Delish! The langoustines were our first time and they were sweet little bites. They are a bit of work, and if we had to do it again, we'd probably go for the seafood platter or slow cooked beef cheek! Then came the pud. Decadent beyond! The food was excellent but what really elevated our meal was how well we were taken care of by the team. Thank you Cath and gang for making 2 little Asian ladies feel at home and so well fed! Bravo!
P.S. If you can work something out with Bog Myrtle Cafe's baker for their sourdough bread, that would totally level up the mussels with white wine dish! ;-)
This was hands down the best meal we had in Scotland over the course of a week. The food is outstanding and fresh. The service was a bit slow, especially towards the end of the evening when they were working on cleaning up the restaurant. Be sure to make a reservation in advance! We couldn’t get one online but called and they were able to make one for that same evening. I will be dreaming of the sticky toffee pudding for years to come!
Just had dinner at Old School in Dunvegan. Great atmosphere and food. Our waitress, Cath, was the best! Enjoyed our conversation with her. Awesome service! 👏👏👏
Wow, this place is delicious. We came in around 5:00 for dinner with no reservations and they were able to get us a table. Perhaps we were lucky so may want to make reservations.
They start you off with bread and butter which I always appreciate. I got the blue cheese salad and my husband got the Cullen sink soup. Both were delicious, loved the blue cheese, not too strong.
For the main, I got the grilled salmon and he got the beef cheeks. Salmon was so tender and delicious. The sauce was a great pairing to the mild fish. Perfect amount of fish. Husband had the beef cheeks, which were also incredibly tender, almost melt in your mouth. Very happy with our dinner. Service was also friendly and attentive.
Someone sitting next to us had the fish and chips, they were gigantic.
Very delicious food, seafood so fresh and tasty🤩🤩we can't eat in as they already full book when we arrive so we only can buy take away, recommended to make a reservation before you go, they are dog friendly and have some table that you can sit outside👍👍
We had the mussels with fries, and the chicken wraped in bacon with vegetables. Both was delicious. The chicken was very good, very tasty. They have a real good chef. The mussels were also great. Service was good. The price was fair for the quality of food. You have to make a reservation. It’s always good booked. For a reason.
This restaurant really did pull out all the stops. They organised a special meal fore and my wife's 25th wedding anniversary. The food was first class. Couldn't fault them in any way. This place is really a must go to for great service with a great smile and lovely food.
Thank you very much.
We will be back again.
