Having been a frequent visitor to Dunfermline in the past, I was excited to visit this new Library/Gallery. There is one section of the building that is devoted to the history of Dunfermline and holds many fascinating artifacts. There are huge glass windows, set up with seating, so one can just sit and enjoy the view.
One thing that I noted was a stand along a wall that held portable chairs. One can merely take a seat and set it up anywhere on the floor in order to relax while reading through displays rather than having to stand the entire time. Very clever!
There is a timeline along one wall that features the history of the city, and a clever hologram display at the entrance of the upstairs gallery that gives a synopsis of certain characters in history that are connected with Dunfermline.
In addition to featuring the weaving history, there is a military display that includes personal stories of inhabitants of Dunfermline that went off to war, and the hardships that the city's people had to endure.
There is also and interesting and informative display of the many contributions of Andrew Carnegie world wide.
And, this is all in just one side of the building. The other side holds a huge library. There is a cafe in the building as well as a gift shop. And toilet facilities conveniently located on every floor.
There is also a special children's section with hands on displays.
This truly is a very unique experience and one well worth visiting on a trip to Dunfermline.
My favourite library. I have visited so many libraries in my lifetime and I cannot seem to find a better one than this. The staff are lovely, building is fantastic and there is a very wide range of books. I love that the childrens' section is in a separate area to the main library as it makes studying so much easier. I have not yet visited the reading room but it looks amazing. I love that whether you're taking a book out, wanting to listen to music with headphones in, studying, using their computers, researching historical moments or even just need a quiet space after visiting the high street, you are by no means judged. This library genuinely is my favourite place to be and no matter how many times I visit, I can't wait to come back! I've genuinely never set foot in a nicer place. Oh and did I mention if you get bored, all you have to do it nip upstairs and there's a free museum full of Dunfermline's history?! If this doesn't convince you to visit then I don't know what will!!
Always a pleasant experience visiting the Dunfermline Library and Galleries. Enjoyed the viking exhibition, worth a visit.
I went to the cafe for the first time yesterday with a friend. The staff were lovely and friendly, the choice of food was really good and tasted really nice. The range of cakes was also impressive. It was hard to choose. I went for a sponge type cake. I was a bit disappointed. The sponge was very dry and hard. I am not complaining or criticising , however, I wonder if it might be because the cakes were not covered and had maybe become dry due to the heat in the cafe or the air they were exposed to. I think if they had been covered up, then they would have been fantastic. I am wondering if this is something that could be considered by the management of the cafe. I will definitely be back at the cafe to try one of the unique sausage rolls, but will stay away from the cakes unless they are covered.
I love coming to the gallery and library. The current vikings exhibition is great and we have enjoyed a couple of Viking Wednesdays with special viking guests. The staff are wonderful and have eagerly provided lego with a Viking theme, Viking crafts, dressing up and learning the runic alphabet plus lots more. On a separate note it is great to see every toilet has sanitary products available and there are lots of toilets 😁
A total gem of a place. Friendly and helpful man upon entering explained the exhibits. The museum section was brilliant, a wee step back in time with plenty to see and do. The photo exhibition with photos of the people of Dunfermline was really brilliant too.
Took my grandson to see the Viking exhibition and children's activities. He enjoyed himself, the staff were helpful and there to help. The exhibition was a bit disappointing, showing English and Irish history, even Manx, but no Scottish history!
The Carnegie Library is an excellent day out with plenty to see and do. We went specifically to see the Viking exhibit and attend the talk, both of which were excellent.
Don't know anything about the borrowing library but the museum and fooderie is well worth a visit. Very attentive staff. I heartily recommend that visit especially for 6yr olds and up.
The cafe serves lovely food. Nice welcome as you entered. Will be back to see The Viking Exhibition and its free.
Great library, I have fond memories from childhood and the new extension is fabulous. Well worth the time to visit the exhibits
This is a well decent library, and a nice space, staff are lovely kirstie is a gem.
But the new 'granary' cafe is awful. Heaven Sent was decent, but this new one is really disappointing. The foods alright, coffee's not so great, but the staff just seem uninterested. Waited 17 minutes for 2 coffees when there were barely 6 people in there, 4 of whom were already seated
Beautiful, functional and free! We love he children's library, the gardens with maze and the beautiful galleries. We feel very lucky to have this on our doorstep and donate when we can. Definitely worth a visit!
Great museum now it’s been updated. Plenty to see and it’s free so what else would you want!
Unintentionally had a day to pass in Dunfermline and spent ages here. Best part of the whole day.
I had a lovely long read on a comfy couch with a great view. Quiet, warm and cosy.
I then went to the museum and took away a few great ideas for a work project. Thank you!
