An amazing find and worth the drive through the country roads to get to. A lovely pub with a friendly owner and staff, a place we're locals gather and chat with everyone. A lot of pubs have 'pies' on their menu that are basically just glorified stews with a pastry hat, and this pub restored my faith in the pub food community! Bit dramatic I know but it was amazing. I had the rabbit and black pudding pie, which was rich, tender and delicious, and then discovered it is indeed homemade, using very locally sourced ingredients. Just brilliant and at a great price. Thoroughly recommend this pub for atmosphere, good ale, fantastic food and quality friendly Yorkshire hospitality.

This is an amazing pub, the staff where so friendly, they couldn't do enough for us,my wife has some intolerances and they went out of their way to ensure we were catered for. I had a Cleveland pie followed by the sticky toffee pudding oh my days it was a taste sensation from start to finish. I could not recommend this pub enough. It is a gem !!!!!!

It was my father in laws 79th birthday and it was a fantastic rvening. I have to say that it was such a wonderful visit. The atmosphere fantastic. The drink / alcohol, perfect. However the food...... argh the food. What can I say. The food was enjoyed by all. I have had a steak and ale pie many times but that had to be by father the best. Thank you to the chef for the food but to our server. (Young lad with glasses) He was fantastic. So warm and accomadating and not afraid to help in any way. He was very professional. I'd like to know his name so i can thank him personally. Once again many thanks to all.

I went to the Chestnut Horse recently with my wife and friends for a meal. The atmosphere in the pub is very friendly and warm. I had what I consider to be the best pie that I have ever had in my life. I had the "Pit pony". The pastry was delicious. The filling of sausage meat, black pudding and haggis topped off with a runny duck egg was a total joy to experience. I'll definitely go again. My problem will be if should have another of those pies or try a different one.

We visited today for Fathers Day Lunch & can honesty say WOW! Not disappointed in anyway! Quirky little place, amazingly polite bar / waiting staff! The Pies - well did not disappoint! Full with filling to the top & tasted fab. Owners more than happy for our 7 year old to bring half of her Wonky Donkey Pie home. We pre-ordered to save the wait with a toddler & definitely worth doing. Kevin & Lucy if I could give stars 10/10 I would. We will definitely be back

Visited the Chestnut Horse at Kelk on Sat 10th June. What a gem this pub is. The food, owners and atmosphere were brilliant. We didn't have the pies but having seen them we will certainly be after sampling them on our next trip. We had calamari, steak, hunters chicken.... and just had to try the chocolate brownie too. All piping hot and divine. This pub is certainly worth a trip out to.

Absolute class pub. Welcoming, warm and traditional. Our family of 4 tried 3 pies and a fish and chips. All of them freshly made and stunningly tasty .

Small and intimate and very friendly pub. We had been told about the famous pies and were not disappointed. Four of us ordered four different pies, Chicken, Irish, lamb and Ox cheek. I had the ox cheek, Cleveland pie which was gorgeous, very rich and strong flavours. We all very much enjoyed our food. Very large pies, so sharing one is an option, which are cooked to order. Worth waiting for!

During our holiday in the area we saw this pub on google maps and so emailed to book a table. We arrived and ordered our drinks. We were served by Lucy and she was so friendly and chatty with me and my children. We were shown to our table and told about the extensive choice of pies on offer. We ordered 4 pies and a scampi for a child. I ordered mash with mine and was later informed no mash was available so opted for chips, no problem. Lucy allowed my son to have garden and mushy peas with his scampi and I chose carrots. The pies arrived and we were not disappointed, they were definitely worth the wait. Lucy brought us a huge boat of onion gravy to go with our pies. You can choose a smaller pie if you cannot face the big ones and believe me they're huge. We all really enjoyed our meals and wouldn't hesitate to return or recommend this establishment to others. We're so glad we found this hidden gem. Sadly we had no room for dessert and I suspect many people don't. We'd like to thank Lucy and her team for making us feel so welcome and for the delicious home cooked food and beer.

Nice little pub despite the faded decor. The fireplace is a nice touch that gives the place a homely feel. Had the beef, mushroom and Guinness pie for lunch on a Sunday. The meal was absolutely amazing. The pie was freshly made so it took a little while to arrive but was eventually brought out by the chef. When it arrived the pie was a lot bigger than expected and was almost more than I could handle. The pastry was great - not too try and crumbly, perfectly baked. The filling was tasty too and the pie was definitely filled to capacity. On the plate was also an assortment of vegetables - cauliflower, carrots, runner beans, broccoli. Also there was a choice of chunky chips or mashed potatoes.

Our first visit last night after hearing nothing but good things about the place. Quirky old school pub made a nice change from the usual franchise type of pub we usually eat at. We arrived at the same time as a party of 9 that had pre ordered their food so we had to wait our turn. This was no issue at all as the waitress explained what was happening and was very apologetic. The food was amazing but be warned that the pies are HUGE. None of us finished them so no room for pudding - next time we will ask for a small one. Massive selection of pie flavours. I had scampi and it was crispy and golden with proper chips and peas. Overall a great experience with lovely food and friendly staff.

Great to have Lucy back doing what she does best. Friendly and warm pub with great food. Lucy has nailed gluten free pastry!!! Being coeliac I struggle to find places that really understand and embrace gluten free food. My pie was as big and tasty as the normal pies and genuinely the BEST GLUTEN FREE I have ever tasted. If you are gluten intolerant you MUST try these pies.

One of North Yorkshire gems, so don't be put off by its looks, we nearly were and would have regretted it. The hosts were so welcoming and we felt a great ease with our two young grandchildren. The food was absolutely delicious, the best gammon I have tasted, and the range of freshly made pies was unbelievably. Would thoroughly recommend and we will be returning next time we are in the area.

Very nice rustic pub, a little bit out of the way but well worth the visit. The pies are fantastic have won awards. Very welcoming staff and great service. Only minor problem was that the chips were overcooked for our liking, may not be the case everytime though.

Recommended the starters provided you have a very healthy appetite as the pies prepared to order are very filling. Although the traditional peas and mash topped them off well l would have liked to had wider choice of seasonal vegetables offered. Didn't get to try to sweet selection, too full and all a very reasonable cost.
