Old Worlde Pub with eclectic interior bang in the Center of quaint old Downe home of Charles Darwin.
Lovely warm welcome from charming young bar team. Great service and dap hands at pulling a number of pints of Harvey's Bitter. The beer is exceptionally well cellared as you might expect from Camra Pub of The Year 2014.
Jackie greeted us as old regulars as we had thoughtful pre ordered lunches. Glad we did for as soon as paid wooooosh out they came.
Dear reader these various dishes were exceptional - fresh, varied and home cooked meats and veg - perfectly reasonable prices in todays market - we were all surprised and delighted.
Expressing our thanks to the team on departure was a pleasure.
PS Good Parking Too
PPS Cheap ale Tuesday & Wednesday (why did we go Thursday?? 😂)
Entered into our club "Pub of The Year" so we shall see.
We ate in the outside marquee.
Looks like a nice country restaurant as well in the pub so well worth a visit and road test the menu.
Further to my original review below I went back and had lunch, the ham sandwich was immense. Excellent home cured ham and lots of it. You won’t leave hear hungry!
Original review below:
Great pub in Downe, very friendly owners and nice drinks to quench the thirst. I’ve not eaten here yet but will do soon.
Very friendly pub and great staff. Popped in by chance and not disappointed. Sausage & mash (great tasting sausages and worth 5 stars) and a prawn baguette (would have liked the choice brown bread).
Nice country vibe, friendly service and wonderful food, definitely worth a visit.
A nice Sunday Lunch after a stroll around the scenic surroundings that Downe has to offer, cosy feel pub, with a big open fire to warm up beside, lovely food, good value for money, and pleasant staff, all washed down with a glass or two of wine!
We visited on 29th December 2022. We were welcomed into the bar and ordered lunch. Food was fantastic and the staff were so friendly. We felt really welcomed and would definitely return.
What a charming pub and a charming owner. The pub must be about 500 years old and as the character to go with it.
It has a decent menu and the bottle of Rioja that we purchased complimented our delicious meal.
So, the Salt & Pepper Squid I had as a starter was scrummy, if not a trifle over cooked.
The Rock Fish & Chips I had as a main (You can see my theme here?) was tender and beautifully cooked. A few more chips would have been welcome and perhaps another choice of peas... mushy, puree.
Will most certainly be going back there.
Had a wonderful Sunday afternoon meal here. Excellent food and excellent service - lovely, friendly and helpful waitresses. Would thoroughly recommend the nut roast - the best one I've ever eaten!
Top notch pub lunch - much better than most restaurants - I had the home made Cottage Pie with ‘fresh’ veg and my friend had home made fish cakes with salad and chips. Both were absolutely delicious and it was topped with a very good glass of Cab Sav. Highly recommend and would return if in the area again.
Really friendly and efficient staff, excellent t COVID precautions in place.
Fantastic village pub after a long walk or bike ride in the countryside! Nice selection of cask ales and good food. The pub currently has a large tent outside with good social-distancing and a heater inside. But still best to wear some warm layers on chilly days.
Amazing delivered afternoon tea from Jackie and Nigel at the Queens Head, Downe Village. The cakes were incredible, being light, scrumptious and beautifully prepared. The scone and cream were a delight and made for one of the best afternoon teas we have had in a very long time.
Thank you for the perfect afternoon treat.
Lovely Tea Rooms with outside seating and good views of the village.
Nice pub where to drink a beer after visiting Darwin 's house.
Great village pub with a good choice of drinks and excellent food and service.
We visited as part of funeral party. The staff were so nice and friendly. The buffet that was laid on was plentiful and enjoyable. Apart from the usual alcoholic beverages that you expect to find in a pub, there was excellent teas or coffees. Thank -you.
Nice cask pint, pit stop before home lovely garden, in a small village.
We had a lovely lunch. I can recommend the bacon sarnie (very well done), the sausage sarnie and there was a good range of cakes especially the red velvet.
All served by welcoming staff.
Fab pub with an excellent choice of food and drinks! Staff is friendly!
We really enjoyed our visit here for a spot of lunch after touring Charles Darwin’s Home in Downes, Kent. This pub is oozing history as well, and its bar is aptly named the Darwin Bar after its most famous patron. More importantly, it still has a good local clientele, so not just a tourist-trade spot. We really appreciated the warm welcome of the staff.
