I have no idea why Uncle Lim's were intent on staining the skin of the chicken yellow but ye gads ... turmeric or not, it was still pretty tasty dish

Uncle Lim's - Hainan Chicken Rice I was introduced to Hainan's Chicken Rice by a friend of mine; I never tasted anything quite like it. The aromatic scent of the stock sauce and silky soft chicken meat that melts instantly in your mouth. It was memorable experience!

I'd heard a lot of good things about Uncle Lim's chicken rice. Sold only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, people have trekked from far and wide for it. It was only a matter of time before I hauled my lazy ass down to East Croydon for a taste.

You know how sometimes you crave simple things but you don't know where to find a really good version of it? Well, I've been craving chicken rice for months now, and most recently, it has taken me all the way to Croydon to find possibly, the best chicken

I was introduced to Hainan’s Chicken Rice by a friend of mine; I never tasted anything quite like it. The aromatic scent of the stock sauce and silky soft chicken meat that melts instantly in your mouth. It was memorable experience!

Anyways after this super mad craving to hunt for the best one in London town I happened to come across a blog directing me to Croydon. Some people think I’m a complete psycho when it comes to me and food, when food involved I’m involved!

I managed to find some free time to head to Croydon for this tasty little treat; it took a while to figure out where Uncle Lim’s was. It’s located inside the Whitgift shopping centre on the top floor, as I arrived I asked for the Hainan chicken straight away. My face almost dropped when they said there was none left. Luckily the owners managed to make me a portion, and I ordered a Teh Tarik.

I was happy when the plate arrived, a very generous portion of chicken drizzled with the special sauce, topped with crispy onions accompanied with rice, and a side salad. The dish was very fragrant the best part was of course the divine chicken. A silky soft firm texture, the sauce was flavoursome, infused with sweet, savoury chicken stock and soy sauce.

It is certainly one of the best Hainan chicken I’ve tasted so far in London and will be trekking back for more!

Oh look, an Asian restaurant whose name has nothing to do with the oriental nickname of table tennis, a bloody dragon, golden-something, and doesn't claim to be some royal moon legend king of Sichuan and dumpling village.

Me? A problem with unoriginal, stereotypical Chinese restaurant names? No...

I was, however, comforted by the fact that this Malaysian eating place had a name close to home: Uncle Lim's. In Southeast Asia, most particularly in Singapore and Malaysia, middle-aged to elderly men can be addressed as 'uncle', even if they are not a sibling of your parent. You can approach a 60-something year old man for $1 ice cream and greet him as 'uncle'.

When you go into a place with a name like 'Golden Dragon', you expect food which tastes unauthentic and mediocre, just like its unoriginal name. (Having said that, I've never eaten at Golden Dragon, so I can't judge just yet, but I'm already turned off anyway.) When you go to a Malaysian canteen-style eating place called 'Uncle Lim's', you are like, hey, I feel like I know this Uncle Lim guy already, and I'm going to see a balding, aproned Chinese man take my order with a smile and a familiar slang.

Maybe my expectations were a little high, as I had my order taken by one of two caucasian ladies who were standing behind the steaming trays of various meat and vegetable dishes, which were choices for meal deals which come with steamed rice or noodles.

I shared a plate of Hainanese Chicken Rice (£5) with a friend, as the portions are said to be huge, and they were indeed. The dish was served with steamed chicken, cucumbers, tomatoes, and fragrant rice cooked with chicken broth. For chicken rice so far from home, they really have managed to get the correct taste of both the rice and the tender chicken, plus the black sauce drizzled on top. Five more gold stars for the extra large portion as well. The only thing I was sceptical about was the fact that the skin on the chicken was yellow - quite a scary yellow. However, I did some research, and it appears that yellow-skinned chicken is corn-fed, and therefore extra tasty.

I'm definitely going to return to Uncle Lim's one day, to try their famed Char Kway Teow, (stir-fried, flat and broad rice noodles) and the mixed rice/noodle dishes. It is a good fix for a hometown-food-craving, with great value and a decent variety.

We went for lunch and left as happy customers. The food was authentic and delicious and not oily at all. Staff were pleasant and friendly and the meal was reasonably priced. We had the curry laksa and fried noodles. We would definitely come back and try other things on the menu.

Excellent Malaysian Food. Definitely worth the trip to Croydon. They’ve moved from their previous Whitgift venue. Their card machine was broken so there was a cash or bank transfer option.

Went there expecting to find the previous Japanese restaurant, gave it a try anyway and I was not disappointed. They just relocated to these premises and I am sad to say I did not know of their existence in Whitgift before. I will return for sure. The food smelled divine, tasted amazing, the portions were good, the price range affordable and the lady I assumed to be the owner or manager was very welcoming. It was quiet when I went as it was 9pm on a Wednesday but I am sure they won't be for long.

Update: I've visited Uncle Lim's new restaurant at South end, Croydon. And this time i tried Hainan chicken, and Mrs Seafood Curry laksa. I must say, I'm now a fan of Hainan chicken. It was simple, yet Uber delicious. Curry laksa we've tried before, and as usual, it was very tasty. And portion was enough for 2. One of best places to get nasi goreng in south London

Terrific Malaysian cuisine. The curry laksa (ie curry mee) is especially great. We've just come back from Malaysia and can say that Uncle Lim's is authentic, really tasty food and we highly recommend a visit! We'll be back for sure.
