Another fabulous visit to The Ugly Butterfly. The staff without exception are friendly and welcoming and well informed. The food is outstanding, the best we have ever eaten. The tasting menu was divine and the chefs very happily adapt dishes to suit preferences/allergies. It is expensive but we can see why. A large team of experts spend many hours preparing delicious food. We were seated at the counter and it was a fabulous experience to watch the team in action. We live in Hampshire but specifically went to stay at the hotel to visit the restaurant again. Absolutely brilliant well done and thank you everyone.

Excellent fine dining experience with stunning views of Carbis Bay. The no waste concept comes through each dish and so lovely to see a restaurant committed to zero waste life style. We loved our dinner at the Ugly Butterfly. Delicious food and excellent service! Definitely the best dinner I’ve ever had! My favourite items were the snacks, chicken butter and scallop. The cocktails are delicious too! It’s a pricey tasting menu but so worth it. Highly recommend visiting and can’t wait to come back!

The second x Adam Handling I have visited after Loch and Tyne. Out of this world seafood with a view that will want you coming back for more. Everything tasted amazing. If I had to choose, scallops were my favourite! This is another perfect example of one of my favourite sayings “you get what you pay for” Well worth travelling for! We traveled from Southampton! Well done to the whole team for a top tier whole round experience!

Apart from one other table booked for a relatively quick meal we were the only diners. Staff were friendly, professional and helpful throughout the meal. Food was creative and very enjoyable.

Amazing place and beautiful setting. Food is great and the servers are very attentive. During my visit to Cornwall, this was probably the highlight of the trip.

If I could give this place more than five stars I would. The best veggie meal I have eaten anywhere. I think there were 11 courses in total. Everyone was exquisitely made. Service was excellent. It was a very special evening and we will go again when we are in Cornwall.

It’s no wonder this restaurant is rated so highly. We went for a leisurely 7 course lunch (make sure you have reserved a few hours to fully enjoy!) over the holidays and had a wonderful experience. The staff was attentive, and the view of the ocean and beach was relaxing and great for people and dog watching. The fried oysters were an additional cost per person but I highly recommend trying one - I’m normally not a fan but these were great. I’m not convinced the raw oysters were worth the price tag however. The rest of the meal was course after course of beautiful looking and tasting food. Typically tasting courses offer tiny portions, but I felt these were quite generously sized and often involved multiple components per round. The venison and agnolotti dishes stood out the most as being artfully presented and tasting heavenly. Note there is no photo of the venison because I couldn’t wait to take a picture before devouring it. I was talked into doing the wine pairing by my friend, and while not cheap it truly elevated my experience. The pours were heavy, and from mostly pricey bottles that I likely would never purchase on my own. If you’re driving or don’t want the full pairing, you can also purchase the pairing for specific courses. The holiday cocktail menu offered unique drinks that we were able to enjoy in the lounge before we moved into the dining room. If you don’t have the time or money for the full dining experience, this lounge and bar is a great way to still enjoy the view and ambiance of the Ugly Butterfly.

Absolutely amazing experience. The view is to die for, and the food was as well. Got the oysters at the start, both raw and crunchy. They are extra, and then on top of that you can get a dropper of whiskey or wine for extra as well. Well worth it if you like good oysters and whiskey. One person in our party is vegan and the kitchen to such excellent care to make sure that the vegan dishes were matched with the non-vegan courses in appearance and flavor profile. Very special New Years lunch.

Fabulous 7 course tasting menu and wine pairing. Loved every course. We visited to celebrate my fiancés birthday. Birthday card was a nice touch, as was the edible candle .cake’, and the dried flowers were lovely. Food is fantastic, served by a very knowledgable team, and the wine pairing is spot on. Location is beautiful of course. It’s not cheap but as a treat is was up there with some of the best tasting menus we have had. Well done to your team Adam.

Well, the food and wine combos were genuinely good. However the bill was genuinely ridiculously huge. Especially when we queried the bill (and had to do so twice) which did overcharge us and was really disappointing. So mixed. Especially when keen to support local businesses :0/

Incredible restaurant and bar in a breathtakingly picturesque location. Drinks at the bar are unique and delicious (and most feature a non alcoholic version). Food at the restaurant is mouth watering and more than delivers on taste. The staff across both the bar and the restaurant are incredible. Could not recommend coming out to Ugly Butterfly more.

Absolutely beautiful restaurant. The most incredible location overlooking the Carbis Bay. A must for any celebration also. They have the most beautiful views overlooking the sea with floor to ceiling windows. The decor & food is just to die for. But what made this place so special was the most amazing staff. They were super smiley and the most friendly I have ever encountered. Me and my partner had just got engaged and they all came to congratulate and made the evening more special with a card, the best seat in the house and a glass of fizz to cheers with. Thank you so much. We shall defo return. X

Beautiful destination, Artisan food of depth & flavour displayed in Creative Dishes crafted of imagination, skill, passion & regional produce served with friendly welcoming expertise & professionalism within the bar & restaurant setting of comfort, bright airy colourful vibrancy overlooking the golden clean sands of Carbis Bay & deep blue Atlantic Ocean beyond. The culinary experience immersed us to the cusp of worlds, comfort & nature, land & sea, opulence & freedom the beauty of living British coast & culinary excellence. Starting our evening journey in the relaxed and informal bar area we sat in comfort by the window overlooking the curved bay below enjoying a cocktail “homage to the frog” a sharp refreshing fun drink with its own green visitor of frog sorbet to eat or drink as it dissolved over our early evening conversation, the time passing slowly as we relaxed easing us into the night ahead. After drinks we were Invited through to the restaurant area and seated at our cosy airy table overlooking the evening sun over the bay, opting for the taster menu & wine pairing our culinary adventure began, exploring deep flavours of regional ingredients served in bright and bold colour, texture & flare which accompanied the location in perfect sync, the wines & dishes delivered with knowledge and efficiency which welcomed us to each course as our journey extended until late of night. The perfect setting for a special occasion and memorable dining experience, uniquely the Ugly Butterfly 🦋

Had a lovely dinner there on 5 course tasting menu. I don’t eat meat, but they were flexible and can provide pescatarian, vegetarian and vegan substitutions. Service was excellent and very friendly. We especially loved the cheese and truffle doughnut in the snacks, the monkfish with smoked potato, and the palate cleanser of cherry and gelato. We had 2 cocktails, which were interesting but not quite as good as the food - or maybe just less to my taste. Recommended!

Exceptional food and setting. Also good service and a nice choice of background music! I've docked one star because some of the food was sold as "local" when in fact it wasn't. E.g. most of the "local" cheeses were produced outside of Cornwall (mostly Somerset). That was disappointing. It would be nice to see this restaurant fully supporting the local Cornish economy. Otherwise excellent.

One of the best settings for a restaurant/bar in the UK. The service is delivered by an excellent, well trained team who you can tell enjoy working together. Josh, who runs the bar is so knowledgeable in what he does and takes the time to find you the right drink. In the restaurant, everyone really works together to ensure your whole experience is exceptional, George made us feel so welcome and like we were the only ones in the dining room whilst pairing wines for us to Adam’s tasting menu. Josh, our waiter in the restaurant was also fab; he’s super personable and remembered us form a previous trip, at a different restaurant in St.Ives. Overall, we continued to come back to Ugly butterfly throughout our stay at Carbis Bay, as it really is that good. Best bar, best food, best setting and importantly the best staff who really care about your experience. We’d 100% recommend and will be back.

Excellent food with attentive service, but not perfect. My wife and I had 'Adam's Menu' which is the taster courses. We was slightly reluctant at first due to a couple of the courses wasn't usually to our taste. Overall, I enjoyed the courses I was reluctant about the most. The waiters from the start were fantastic, and even made me a cocktail that wasn't on the menu (top points). The selection of wine, cocktails and beer were vast and mostly locally sourced (majority of the wines excluded). The 'snacks' was the first course to come out and what a fantastic display that was, I even thought that all of the courses came out at once as there was so much food. Every snack was explained thoroughly and the recommended order to eat them. The other courses were fantastic, especially the lobster what was cooked simply but full of flavour! The ingredients are all local and the lobster was freshly caught, explained the waiter. I would say this is tastiest lobster I've ever had (marinated in retired dairy cow fat). The bread, chicken butter was out of this world (make sure you ask for more bread). The only disappointment was the mushroom tortellini was undercooked on the bottom of the parcel and very crunchy. The portions were excellent and I left the restaurant feeling full. The service was very good apart from the end when paying the bill. The waiter approached and took the card from the bill and handed me the card machine and passed me the receipt without saying 1 word. My only critism is for the waiter (all the other waiters were exceptional) to at least ask if we enjoyed the meal and experience and provide the exceptional customer service you would expect at a high end restaurant.
