Beautifully arranged museum with lots of info, introduced by incredibly friendly staff. Loved the video, the quiz and the opportunity to sit down and take everything in. What an amazing man John Ruskin was! Thank you.
We were invited by Brantwood staff members Helen and Maria for a complimentary visit to the house and gardens. We met them at the A-Ha exhibition for local hoteliers.
It has to be said our visit to Brantwood and the guided tours Helen and Maria provided is a highlight for us of 2024 thus far. The house, the gardens, its history and the wider setting are outstanding. The walk up from the house to Crag Head and subsequent views over Coniston Lake were well worth the effort. Better than that, though, was the incredible energy and informed enthusiasm of Helen and Maria who are each excellent ambassadors for Brantwood.
We then took our grandchildren to a Go Wild Easter event at Brantwood, which was guided by Maria and a colleague. This was thoroughly enjoyable and rich in its creativity. We would definitely recommend these children's events to parents and grandparents. Get yourself to Brantwood, and your kids and you will have a great time crafting or weaving or gardening for just £3. Outstanding value and really lovely as well.
Thank you Maria and Helen !
A wonderful location in a magnificent setting.
We visited in January so weren't able to access the gardens due to snow and ice.
We were greeted by friendly welcoming staff.
In order to get around the site you need to be reasonably mobile with a number of steps and narrow paths.
Interesting, stone & crystal displays, a wonderful small library and reading room, in a modest historic building.
I enjoyed the visit and thought the terrace tea rooms would be wonderful on a sunny day to sit outside with the views of Coniston Water. As it was January I was grateful for the warmth of a real fire, comfortable seats and a nice cuppa.
Fascinating place with bags of information about John Ruskin. It is a massive estate with beautiful grounds that are really well kept. We arrived by the steam gondola but you can also arrive by boat or by road. There is a cafe that serves 10.30-4 but when we were there (end October) it only served cakes and toasties. Really friendly staff. Great day out.
We went across on the Coniston Launch and had £1 knocked off the admission price! A lovely, interesting place to visit with the most amazing views of the lake.
Excellent house and gardens.
Gardens are extensive and varied.
House is interesting, especially the family history and learning about the person.
Views and surrounding scenery are worth taking time to view and explore
Excellent visit. Lovely gardens and food. Staff were friendly and helpful. Toilets were clean.
Gorgeous house and grounds. Great cafe with excellent food and service. Best view from the terrace of Coniston Water and the Old Man.
It was an interesting view in to John Ruskin and the views are amazing. However, the garden walks are not for anyone who has issues with mobility or bad knee joints. Cafe was pleasant, with decent coffee and cake and wonderful views to enjoy whilst you relaxed. Main food on offer was limited and if you're fussy like me you'll stick to the cake.
Well worth a visit. The house of John Ruskin, a giant of the Victorian artistic and cultural scene. In good condition and interesting to mooch around. The grounds overlooking Coniston Water are beautiful and there is also a nice tearoom.
