We were staying in the Ennerdale Hotel in Cleator & we overheard one of the waitresses telling a couple of the guests that if they were going into Cockermouth that she would recommend the Trout hotel for something to eat. We decided last night after a nice long day out driving & walking that we would try it. We forgot it was a Saturday night. The staff were all nice. I think it might have been the restaurant manageress that said they had a table for 2 available in the al carte restaurant. We decided after having a look at both menus that we would eat in the bistro. Both menus were good it was just more casual dining we were looking for. It was just which is usually a good sign. We had a lovely dinner. I had the lemon chicken, chilli rice, brocolli & green beans. My husband had the lasagne. Both meals were lovely. We shared the white chocolate & orange mousse which was delicious. Would definately recommend and if we return to the lake district as we have been many times now we would definately return. The atmosphere and decor are all nice. Morag & Chris from Scotland.

Second time I have been for the Bistro Week, and once again this did not disappoint. All choices and courses that we had were beautifully presented and very tasty. The staff were helpful and very friendly wih the waiter holding the door open as we left, which was a nice touch. Lovely atmosphere for a relaxed enjoyable experience. Looking forward to the next one, or even just going for another meal.

The service was excellent. Best steak I had in a long time. We sat in the dinning area, very cosy. Beautiful place, highly recommend it.

Afternoon tea with friends. A very enjoyable afternoon with friends at the Trout. Afternoon tea was excellent fresh sandwiches delicate cakes and a small cup of tomato soup. With a variety of teas and coffee which were always replenished. Excellent staff who served and accomadated those with dietery requirements. We had so much food we all brought a box home with us. All in all we had a lovely time and will be back. Well done to the Trout and Staff. (A review has also been posted on Trip Advisor ).

Fantastic 1 night stay in Executive River view room. This was a free upgrade and was immaculately clean and all looked like it had recently been refurbished. Staff very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Was on a Dinner, bed and breakfast deal but unfortunately the restaurant was fully booked. We had to eat in the bar but this was fine and food was very nice. We had fillet steak which was undercooked so we sent it back. This was not a problem and 5 minutes or so it came back cooked as we had requested. Overall it did not spoil the dining experience. I would highly recommend this hotel if wanting to stay in a beautiful hotel with great accommodation and lovely staff. This was our third stay at this hotel and will definitely return again. Dinner bed and breakfast is a fantastic deal if available. Thanks again to Sue and all the team.

(Review for the Sunday roast!) - date of visit: August 2023. We had to book in advanced for the recommended Sunday roast. The hotel itself is impeccably decorated and well-kept. Staff front of house and those who served us were all very friendly, helpful and welcoming. We were given a choice of seating options and once we sat down, immediately you can tell the hotel is of high quality. It was empty and we spoke with a couple who were very interested in our food options. We all opted for Sunday roast. No messing around, everything from our drink orders to food; all timed perfectly. Starters, mains and desserts. All food is of the highest quality and made with fresh ingredients. Look at the size of the Yorkshire puddings! We were all very full; especially when our arm was twisted for dessert! Happy to pay service charge and well worth the cost. Please visit, you won’t be disappointed!

I never actually stayed in a room. But, I attended the restaurant three evenings in a row. All I can say is you would not be disappointed unless you're in a coma. Fantastic welcoming, and attentive, staff. Made me a drink that was not on the menu, and remembered my drinks order on the following visits. Food was delicious, and presently wonderfully. I recommend the pan fried sea bass main dish. But, I also recommend anything on the menu. Very versatile chef who allowed me to change certain aspects, just to my mere taste preferences. I really cannot rate the place higher than I am already doing so. The only true quality place to eat in Cockermouth, and I'm sure far beyond the area too. Top marks, for a top establishment. I do wish I could eat there every day. Excellent, to say the very least.

Lovely hotel. Bing Crosby, a true Hollywood star of old, stayed here when he was 'gone fishin' on the river Derwent. Nice food, good atmosphere, pleasant staff.

Although we just had a birthday meal, the decor of the hotel was spectacular! The food was outstanding and the service was excellent! We would definitely recommend the Trout Hotel for a special occasion.

Stayed at the Trout Hotel many times and on this occasion we could see the slight differences and corner cutting that has taken place. Reception and breakfast staff were great. Restaurant staff less so. Almost begrudgingly provided a mediocre level of service. A smile does not cost anything but creates a great impact. Food has also changes in some areas; more of a gastro pub menu. That said, food was good albiet a tad rushed between courses. No bottled water in the room which was missed, doesnt have to be posh water but little touches make the difference. Even the bathroom mini bottles were reduced and we stayed in a more premium room. The breakfast was however very good. Probably visit again but needs a little lift overall .

Business trip stop over excellent venue and the weather was perfect with outdoor seating next to the river and another outdoor garden area too. Meals were very good, although we had a set menu which couldn't be any better food was hot and good size portions too. The room was spacious with beverage tray. Breakfast again was good. Choose what you want from a list to make up a traditional English or whatever you prefer,or maybe you just fancy cereal with tea coffee or fruit juice the choice is yours. Highly recommend this Hotel to anyone either business or just exploring the Lake District.

I didn’t see the rooms so cannot comment on this but I can say that the service we received was fantastic, food arrived quickly and was very tasty indeed! My 3 year old was kicking off and I thought we might be asked to leave but thankfully we weren’t and for all u non snobs out there, don’t be put off by how posh it looks, I was worried the clothes I was wearing weren’t appropriate attire but there wasn’t a formal dress wear. Happy staff and friendly service

We had a meal here and the food was amazing nice and hot full of flavour and nicely presented. However the waiter let it down unfortunately there was a young lad behind the bar who was working so very hard and a slightly older chap well let's just say he did like to talk to those he knew. Twice we tried to get his attention but he managed to look the other way when he had looked straight at us. In the end the younger lad seemed to be doing his job as well. Our empty glasses didn't get taken away the whole time we were eating even when we ordered more drinks. The only time the older chap seemed to move a bit quicker was when I asked for the bill. This is a shame because I have eaten here before and the service was amazing hopefully one bad apple won't spoil the barrel as they say. I must say tho the restaurant and rest rooms are spotlessly clean and again the food was amazing.

Took friends for a meal with some trepidation as last time we ate there it was dire - to be fair this was just after it opened after the pandemic and out on the terrace. Our latest outing there, which was inside, was much more successful. We enjoyed a decent meal with fabulous service.

We had our wedding at The Trout and all members of staff were fantastic - they helped with our wedding planning, all our queries and problems, and were always super helpful and friendly. Our room was beautiful and the food wonderful. We're missing it already!

Came for a special birthday lunch. Food was delicious. Had a steak, perfectly cooked, the chips were lovely. Really like the idea of a small dessert with coffee. It satisfied the sweet craving without overfilling as a full size dessert does. The service was good, nice staff very helpful and polite.

Once again the Trout came up trumps with a fantastic New Year break. We’ve been enjoying the device and facilities of this fabulous hotel for over 30 years and have no plans to stop. The food and quality of the rooms remains to the highest standard. Too many to mention them all by name, however under the direction of Sue, Jo, Andy, Stephen and Martin just can’t do enough to make us comfortable. A special mention to Jimmy, who put up with us with good grace and humour. Thank you all, we’ll see you in the summer.
