Lovely little Café in Clitheroe. Me and Mum had cheese and onion pie , mine with beans mum's with peas . Then brilliant scones with cream and jam , washed down with cups of tea . Friendly staff , nice atmosphere and busy , so that speaks volumes. Well worth a visit for a nice lunch 😋
On entering it looks very dated but WOW.... The service was incredible, the lovely lady took us through the menu allowing us to pick our own selection, asked us what size tea cup or mug we would like, sorted our order and was absolutely brilliant. The chairs are soft and comfortable and it's a big bright cafe with plenty of seating. Nothing was too much trouble. Food arrived quick and went even quicker. Again absolutely delicious. The only thing I would recommend to change is your sign outside... It needs to scream "I'm here come in" lol. It is easily missed which is such a shame. You deserve to be busy and thrive as you have done for I think the last 40 years. Well done to you all. If I could give 10 stars I would 🥰
One of my favourite places! Best pie, peas and gravy in town. Sit there, take it in and you'll feel proper northern.
Visited a few times with my son after training. He absolutely loves the sausages and always eats a large breakfast. I enquired about their Whinberry pie and they offered to make me my own; which I didn't share ☺️. Always busy and they make their own cakes etc. Been around for ages and worth a visit.
Fabulicious café that appears deliberately stuck in the 70s. Have not had the pie and peas... yet, did have a build your own breakfast that was superb.
Very friendly staff and very good prices. We will be back soon. 👍
Although it can be nerve-wracking entering this 1970s time-warp café for the first time (especially if you don't look local and of a certain age), don't be shy: it's clean, friendly, not too expensive. The food is excellent of its kind and satisfying in an old-fashioned way. I love the old black plastic menu board on the wall with push-on white lettering, rarely seen since my childhood.
Come here for: pie and peas, perfect jacket potatoes, sandwiches, cakes, excellent fruit tart and a cup of tea.
Don't come here for: coffee (unless you like weak instant coffee).
Counter service, cash only. Expect a short queue at lunchtime, especially Saturdays.
Update Oct 2020. Now takes card payment.
I always check that this place is open before I go to Clitheroe. Food is fab, great amount & quality & the price is perfect. The staff are always wonderful & the place is immaculate.
Family owned cafe, the hub of the town. Always busy. A firm favourite 😍
Very good pie and pea's , good cake selection as well ,teas coffee and shake's overall nice place to sit and chat and eat.
A veritable landmark in Clitheroe and for many known simply as "Swales".
This cafe holds many memories of my childhood - was the place to gather on a Saturday for ice-cream sodas - in the backroom with all your mates. (40 odd years later & it's still a popular cafe)
Lovely milky coffee with pie, peas and gravy is a favourite for many. Good selection of cakes, sandwiches and other menu items means there is something for everyone. Lot's of dining space.
This was the first time for breakfast and it didnt disappoint, delicious bacon on brown with lovely coffee. We've been here on many previous occasions and their meat & potato pie peas and gravy is legendary. Looking forward to our next visit.
Always friendly, food always prepared well and taste good
About as down to earth a place as you can get. No fancy menu here but honest food.
Really tasty small breakfast and coffee x 2 well under £15. Even swapped out one item I don't eat. Clean and great service. Definitely recommend.
Its always good food and lovely staff
Great traditional cafe,friendly staff,tasty food. 😀😀
Absolutely lovely. Great traditional food. Wonderful helpful friendly staff. Affordable prices. Fabulous
Should have mentioned Swales Cafe years ago. This family run business is home from home for a lot of Clitheroe folk and the family always make my partner Carol and I most welcome. The food is excellent and the service is second to none. Would recommend the pie, peas and gravy scrumptious. All in all a great atmosphere and cheap as chips ( excuse the pun!!)
My sisters live in Clitheroe and I've been in here a couple of times with Rory. It's quite old fashioned but brilliant for being so. The food is very good and the staff are really friendly and welcoming. I notice quite a few of the reviews mention that payment is by cash only but they do have a card machine now. Highly recommended
Lovely big cafe, nicely spaced out, the food was served fast and was delicious. The staff were all lovely.
