The cooking is British with some innovative touch, diners can choose between a la carte and a tasting menu, which now seems like the standard formula of any current Michelin starred places
Sir Charles Napier is a very cozy, and yes a bit posh, gastropub in a beautiful area of Oxfordshire...The food was lovely although the portions were quite small and definitely more on the pricey side...
The Sir Charles Napier pub has been under current management for something like forty years and has carved out a special place for itself in the industry and in people's hearts also. Perhaps not (yet) with bloggers, we know of only one other blog post on the Napier, but certainly with the world of food journalists - I even spotted on the wall a review by Matthew Fort dated 1994. Matthew Norman meanwhile reviewed it in the Guardian in 2009 and again in the Telegraph in 2010 giving it 10/10 in the former and 9/10 in the latter. Raymond Blanc is even quoted in the Independent saying 'The Sir Charles Napier is the perfect place to take a loved one'. Part of the reason for the spell cast by the Napier is the beautiful setting in which you find yourself. Drive west out of London on the M40 and after an hour, before you go as far as Oxford, you'll arrive at Chinnor. From there, a steep climb up a mostly single track road delivers you to the Sir Charles Napier and the instant reward for your e
Traditional English pub. Impressive wine list. You could see they were very busy but we were still well taken care of. Service was very friendly. As for the food it was exceptional! Beautiful garden. We hope to return in the near future.
Really lovely country pub - very traditional and hasn't succumbed to becoming too modern. Quite rural but with an amazing garden to sit out in summer. Food is very good, definitely order the 'chips' as a side! A roaring fire on a cold winter day. Service really friendly. Overall would definitely visit again.
Lovely staff. Unbelievably good food. I've done a few Michelin stars and these guys certainly deserve theirs. Wines we picked ourselves but matched the food perfectly, desserts were lovely and the dessert wines went really well with the treacle tart (amazing) and chocolate panna cotta (also amazing).
My husband and I met my parents for dinner tonight at The Sir Charles Napier. It’s our favourite local restaurant and we usually go about 4 or 5 times a year. The ambiance is amazing, staff are very friendly, service is impeccable. There is a good choice of menu to suit all. Tonight I had crab as a starter, trout as my main course and shared cheese to finish. The wine menu is also excellent! I would definitely recommend to ALL!
We had a wonderful evening at The Sir Charles Napier this weekend. Dinner was outstanding, fresh, local ingredients imaginatively combined to make mouthwatering dishes. Quick, courteous service and with drinks outside in the beautiful garden we had a very memorable evening. Compliments to the chefs and all those that made our experience exceptional - thank you!
Beautiful garden, and we were welcomed into it to order drinks before sitting down to our table.
We booked for 1:30 but didn't get seated till around 1:50, however, we weren't in a hurry, so that was ok.
We ordered ribeye beef for two, and for the price, it seemed a little sparse for two people, especially if at least one has a good appetite!
We did not have a starter, so we were served our main course initially. It came quite quickly but the vegetables didn't.
These, along with the bread that we were supposed to have at the start of the meal, came about halfway through us eating it.
My wine glass was removed without enquiry by the waitress with wine still in it.
So, the service was a little haphazard (although usually courteous).
The food, though, albeit a little on the small side for the expensive main course, was delicious, very well cooked, well presented, and thoughtfully created.
I think it is a good place to have a special occasion meal, (it is too expensive for an everyday meal). Especially if you go at a time when the garden can be used.
If that is the market they are going for, they would do well to tighten up on service, though.
Lovely cosy pub/restaurant with log fireplaces. High end food. Dog friendly if you let them know in advance and they found us a spot in the restaurant rather than the bar area. Our dogs are very well behaved. The desserts were delicious as well, alas my phone battery had run out. Looking forward to coming back on warmer days
Everything was absolutely perfect. Beautiful garden, impeccable service, delicious food. Also we got really lucky on the weather which made their outdoor dining even more impressive!
Absolutely exceptional food but service could be improved. All good until you actually sit down then you are left alone. No check backs, no additional drinks. Difficult to get someone attention. A real shame.
Lovely pub just outside London. Perfect for a day trip. The garden is really nice if the day is good you can also have lunch outdoor. The food is amazing. Absolutely a must go
Lovely country restaurant. Great setting with the rolling Chiltern hills as a back drop. If it's a sunny day well worth having a walk around the gardens and finding the rope swing. Delicious food, great service and a good cheese selection.
Exceptional! We happened to have the best spring day so far this year which definitely added to the ambience. Staff are kind and thoughtful. Food was amazing, every course a triumph. And sitting in the garden with the sunshine was just divine.
Quintessential delectable country dining. Friendly service with a reasonable choice of dishes and an extensive wine list. Warm, cosy and welcoming on wet day.
Certainly worth making a reservation.
Lovely location, takes a bit of drive to get there. Food was great and staff was friendly.
