An unexpected overnight stop here after being let down by other local accommodation at the last minute. What a find, we should have booked it in the first place. Accommodation was great, as was breakfast and dinner; a really good fish specials choice and good menu. If we are in the area again we will be back. Thank you to Helen and the team.

Beautiful pub with friendly staff and delicious food. What more can you ask for?! Be sure to save room for the "knicker bonkers" dessert. It is, indeed, bonkers good! We didn't stay in the rooms but the whole place was well kept and charming, so I feel sure the rooms were as nice.

Had the best breakfast we’ve had in years at this fab pub this morning for a birthday treat. We had the Star full English each and a Bloody Mary each…. It was gorgeous. You can tell all the ingredients were local and really good quality. The girl that served us was very attentive and very friendly. Highly recommend this place and we will definitely be back. Thanks for looking after us. 👏❤️

At the end of the second leg of our walk along the South Downs Way, twenty-six miles behind us and down to a half a bottle each of water, we reached our pick-up point and demanded a beer and a bite! Harry welcomed us with old school grandeur and a smile as he poured pints and showed us the menu. The meal and the atmosphere was first class. Our next section of the walk, probably Spring 2024, will end in Amberley, but we'll be tempted to celebrate back at the S & G! Thanks Harry, you're a prince among pub landlords! ... Pete & Luke

What an absolute gem of a pub! Wonderful food, impeccable service and so much appreciation from the staff for our visit. Was refreshing to be in receipt of a service where you were guided through the menu recommendations from starters to pudding, the complimentary homemade focaccia was a wonderful touch, and our meals were delicious. Chicken Milanese & the recommended Tubby Mac were our meals of choice, and would recommend in a heartbeat, generous portions and know to leave room next time for pudding! See you guys soon!

We had a wonderful meal here a few weeks ago. We had 4 adults, a newborn in a pram and a dog and they were so helpful finding us a table where we'd be comfortable but not in anyone's way. We went on a Sunday for a roast and the veggie option had nuts in it - unfortunately the veggie in our group also has a nut allergy but again they immediately organised a nut free nut roast for her which she tells me was excellent. Service was great, food was delightful and I particularly liked the way the manager spoke to his staff. The camaraderie in the team was evident and it was obviously down to the way the manager was running service. Too many restaurants these days have managers/senior staff berating or even bullying the floor/kitchen staff and it's horrible. We will be returning soon!

Lovely and very nice pub, they have definitely some of the best food which you can find out in the West Sussex. In my view this pub is very cosy and is located in one of the prettiest villages I have seen. The staff are very friendly, they have lots of historical photos on the walls about the racing. If you’re petrol head, you might be interested in that as well.

Beautiful area of the world. Lovely beer garden. Stayed one night - perfect accommodation. Staff helped me out with my bad back. Wife so happy she demanded we rebooked for later in the year :-)

We visited on a busy Saturday and had a great meal for 10 people. Very friendly even to my dog 🐕 who got a little stressed because of all the hustle and bustle. Ice cream for him with biscuits 😋

I'm fortunate enough to stay at the Star & Garter during one of the annual Goodwood events and, frankly, would not wish to stay anywhere else! From the moment we pull up outside, Jim and the team welcome us like old friends and from that point on we are treated as such. The accommodation is always spotless and can be reconfigured to suit - doubles, singles, extra beds for children, etcetera. The menu choice in the bar is always varied and I always leave wishing I could have fitted in more of the options available (have never had anything but a superb meal at the Star!) If you're looking for somewhere to stay in a beautifully scenic, South Downs country pub which is convenient for Goodwood, Chichester, Petworth, the Witterings, et al, do try the S&G.

After a week camping in the wild, we bumped into The Star&Garter. Their food menu is INCREDIBLE. We follow a plant based diet and their options are on another level. Every member of their staff was super friendly, welcoming and supportive, they even opened a room so we could keep our bikes safe and dry during the night. The room was cosy, stocked up and up to high standards. Super recommended!!

We stayed two nights at this great pub. The welcome from Jim was friendly and the room was comfortable and clean with views to the South Downs. There was a great coffee maker as well as a kettle and as a real treat fresh milk in a mini fridge instead of long life capsules. The pub served good beer and fantastic food. Service was great and the pub had a friendly atmosphere. We want to explore the area further so we will be back.

Lovely pub and rooms. Jim was a great host, offering advice about the local area and even offering to drop us off at our event nearby. The rooms are lovely with nice touches such as a good coffee machine, and the food in the restaurant is excellent, really fresh breakfast cooked to order.
