We have just one of our best meals out, ever. It’s great when you’re still thinking about the food days after. Tracey had the best pork ever and I want to come straight back for another goats cheese sorbet. Highly recommended!
We were out on a day trip to visit the town and come across this lovely clean top deco pub staff are warm and friendly and made us feel very welcome, our choise of food was excellent in fact best meal out for along time . We will definitely return to this pub .. keep up the good work guys
Great atmosphere, food was excellent and the staff friendly. A wide range of fun cocktails a too. Also the garden looks great now it's been revamped! highly recommend!!
Went for traditional Sunday lunch today! So much more!! Starters wild boar scotch egg!! Out of this world. Main, roast beef and ALL the trimmings! Fabulous. Dessert (shame on me sticky toffee pudding! What can I say...... amazing friendly staff. Great atmosphere and a thoroughly enjoyable meal!
Had a fabulous meal today and the main, a rare steak was great but the starter, I would of loved as a main. A to die for salad of pear, walnut, pomegranate and smoked duck on balsamic dressed salad a pea shoots, pure heaven x
Jordan the chef C&A creates the perfect combination dishes which are pleasing to the taste buds. If you haven't eaten there, do, but make sure you have the best chef in town :) ;)
We thought you might like to know that your pub was awarded 5 stars on gastrohub. Here is the review from our site.
We happened to drive past this pub a few weeks back and thought we should investigate at a later date, well that date was today.
Before we get in to the actual pub, let's talk briefly about parking. The pub doesn't have its own car park, and spaces outside are reduced to one hour. Your best bet is to use the car park just over the road, although that was a slightly confusing affair, many of the spaces set aside for season ticket holders.
We had no idea what was in store as we bravely stepped in to the unknown, having not heard about this pub through word of mouth or learned anything from the tinternet. Upon entry we were greeted warmly, and more importantly, genuinely. We were told that we could choose a table and our menus would be brought over. You know you might be on to something when the first item on the menu is a pheasant keeve, you don't see one of those very often. In fact the whole menu sounded excellent. There was clearly a chef working here with passion and invention. We were slightly alarmed by the cost of some dishes which were on sale for £18 or £19, but a closer look uncovered some better value to be had. Despite all the wondrous and imaginative meals on offer, we both ordered from the bar menu. Dad choosing ham, duck egg and hand cut chips, (£11), while I went for fish and hand cut chips with a pea puree, (£13).
As we waited for the food, we assessed the pub fundamentals. There was some nice music in the background and the staff were really friendly and as I said at the start, genuine, a very undervalued trait. If we had to point at anything, it was a little cold at first, the small open fire fighting hard against the bitter chill outside. It did however seem to warm up during our visit.
When the food arrived, the presentation reinforced our belief in a top chef. Even simple food can still be well presented, and that was certainly the case here. Regular readers will know about my thing for good chips, a rare thing indeed, so I was keen to see what breed of chip was set before us. The answer was, excellent. They were sizable, but cooked perfectly inside, also blessed with a crisp outside. My fish was beautiful inside and out, just like a beautiful nurse who lives to help others. I wasn't sure at first about the pea puree, wanting some actual peas on my plate, but the puree was delicious and made an interesting change from the norm. I've probably said this before, but this may have been the best fish and chips I've had in a pub. Dad's chips were from the same family as mine, so were equally wonderful, while his ham was a thing of true beauty. The duck eggs were a revelation, showing how a little twist and a bit of effort can make a big difference. He also said that this was up there with the best ham, egg and chips he's had. Although our choices may not have been very original, we believe that the pub standards such as our choices, can tell you allot about a pubs food, whilst giving you a rule to measure against other pubs.
This was a floorless lunch, the very cold day apart. The food and the service was exemplary, and we would both happily revisit in a heartbeat. Yes some of the meals are a bit expensive, but if you look around the menu, you can find something to suit your money bag. We think it fitting that a pub with such a brilliant name is also indeed a brilliant pub.
Top drawer grub , made from fresh local produce, friendly staff , great location , clean smart environment , good beer , could not recommend more !!! Go there and experience it for yourself
Went there for the first time yesterday with my husband, no special occasion just to eat. The food was superb, staff very helpful and friendly, nothing was to much. Will definitely be going back, soon. Thank you all very much.
Jacqui and Pete.
Really lovely food, kids meal really good - lovely menu
So nett, gemütlich und super lecker.
Warum gibt es in Deutschland (besser) Umkreis Mainz/Wiesbaden nicht so ein Wohlfühl-Pub
Had a fabulous meal here with our friends after a fun day at Goodwood races. Lovely staff, very attentive and the food was delicious.
Fantastic Quiz last night... Such A Laugh, good vibes and atmosphere... Fantastic service on food and drinks.
The Crate and Apple is quite local to us and we use it fairly frequently. However I had to organise a surprise 50th with short notice, Charlotte, Lisa and the team were fabulous. They worked with my budget and came up with a fabulous buffet which was a little different to your normal vol au vents and sausage rolls. I had so many of the guests say how great it was. Great food, great wine and FANTASTIC service. Thank you so so much.
I took my elderly parents here for Sunday dinner today, my parents are very local but not been for 6 years or more and my Dad wasn’t that keen on going due to previous experiences… Well! We all had a roast and apart from some veg being a bit too ‘al dente’ for them, it was cracking! (Roast potatoes are never the same as home but they were ok) Yorkshire’s were amazing!!! The Smaller plate portions are a good size if you prefer a smaller dinner. Staff were very friendly and welcoming especially our waitress who was very attentive especially to the older folk. Puddings were amazing!! I can personally recommend the plum soufflé and panna cotta Will definitely be visiting again! 🙂
Wow what a great meal! We had a lovely lunch (5 adults + toddler). Every single thing we ordered was delicious, we cleared out plates! The butternut squash risotto was amazing, as was the 3 sausage dish. We also enjoyed the Crate Apple dessert, Panna Cotta, and plum soufflé which were the perfect ending. Our server (young blonde woman) was very attentive and gave ua great recommendations, and very friendly. We will definitely be back
Stopped here on a quiet rainy Monday night and had a lovely meal. Small menu but my Chicken was delicious, along with everything else on the plate. Well looked after. Harvey's and Doom Bar on tap.
Nice place and they do a decent Sunday roast and have a good choice of beer on tap.
Dog friendly and parking is ok. Not on site but not far from the venue but you have to pay
They offer small versions of adult meals for children which is good
This was, without a doubt, the best food we have ever eaten at a pub. We are in Chichester for the weekend from London and didn't know what to expect food-wise, but its honestly some of the best that we've ever eaten. And the service was incredible, we had Katie and Aaron tending to us for the evening, and they could not have been more welcoming or delightful. Will definitely get the 90 minute train down here again, just to come here for another meal.
Held a surprise birthday meal here for my Mum's 70th and they couldn't have been more accommodating. Lisa was great at communicating, sending through menu options and tailoring them to various dietary requirements. On the day, Lisa and the team were friendly and helpful, even when we decided to switch tables and move everything over! The food was beautiful and was commented on by everyone at the party. Lovely secluded outdoor area. Highly recommend.
WOW! What can I say! An outstanding award winning pub with fantastic tasting food!
We walked past this pub more than once, before we decided to have a change and eat in here so booked a table for Saturday evening.
Wow! Stunning Soup starter followed by fabulous Salmon and fine dark chocolate desert matched with great desert wine.
Also has nice front terrace and even better rear terrace where again I enjoyed a fine after dinner whiskey 🥃 and fine Cuban Cigar!
We wanted to eat dinner on Sunday night but they stop serving food at 3pm in the afternoon.
We definitely coming here again when we visit GoodWood!
Me and friends popped in without a booking. We had Camembert and a few bits and all the food was delicious. The lovely Ben and aggi served us and welcomed us in. Thank you so much for a lovely evening
A great place to unwind with friends and enjoy some delicious food. We have enjoyed the Crate and Apple a couple of times, once for dining and the other for our daughter's wedding reception and they could not have been more friendly, accommodating and hard working for both occasions. Probably now my favorite restaurant in Chichester.
Lovely place to have a nice meal. 3 courses for a fair price, a lovely atmosphere and staff very clean. With a relaxed vibes.
Came back to this place after 4 years. The drinks were really nice but the food was just alright considering the price. That's my only gripe, the cost vs the quality. I had fish and chips and the fish had been overcooked so the fish inside was dehydrated and the chips were just chips. Nothing special. Everything else was alright to be fair
Had a nice lunch here. Good portions, fresh food and decent selection of drinks. Front and back beer garden so plenty of choice. Thanks Chloe!
Visiting Chichester and popped for a drink on a warm day. Unfortunately a private party was in the garden. No seats with a table available at the front, so Sat on a bench seat. Still pleasant. Staff were cheerful. Will visit again if back in "Chi"
Very noisy on our visit. Dog friendly. Food good but portions a bit small we found.
Very enjoyable food and drinks, service was a tiny bit slow but I realised after there was a party of about 15 inside that had just arrived so can’t complain about that- would definitely come back
Wow!! We had the most amazing Sunday lunch at the crate and apple. The food was perfection 🫶 For desert we had raspberry soufflés which were amazing.
A huge thanks to the Crate and Apple team outstanding service 🥂
