An amazing place to eat and drink! An interesting menu with lots to tempt away from the ordinary. The staff were fantastic and very helpful. A good selection of beers, cider and wine. Thoroughly recommend making the trip for a meal, you won’t be disappointed.
Wonderful food with very attentive and knowledgeable staff .. me and my other half had such a great experience, would recommend the taster menus with wine flight to match, it was superb ... relaxed country pub atmosphere, we cannot wait to come back!
What a lovely way to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary.... a relaxed evening with fantastic food n wine - Taster menu with fine wine flight - all served by friendly and knowledgeable staff 😀 We will be back 😀
The drive from the Jurassic coast back to Birmingham was always going to require a stopover. It’s not like the journey there, when the anticipation of the sea breeze takes over and five hours in rush hour traffic doesn’t seem too bad an idea. The trip back to reality is a gruel where work and bills and air pollution await. We needed somewhere that isn’t a Welcome Break to recharge our internal batteries. To take stock of reality. To bemoan that nauseating fool in the office who will ruin the holiday mood first thing Monday morning.
The Pony & Trap is a Michelin starred country pub run by Josh and Holly Eggleton in Chew Magna, around 7 miles south of Bristol. The pub places emphasise on a field to fork ethos and source food as locally as possible from suppliers around the Chew Valley and the South West. Chef Josh Eggleton was recently on the Great British Menu and has an impressive pedigree, having worked at the likes of The French Laundry and Chanterelle. During our visit last month we ordered the tasting menu at £60 per head along with the very competitively priced wine flight at £25. A selection of canapes were delivered including pork crackling quavers with apple purée, scallipops, pan fried scallops wrapped with pancetta and a celeriac soup with cheddar foam. The latter came with a delightful Parmeasan mustard palmier. The first course was squash, Stilton and chicory with pumpkin seeds. Nice and fresh with different textures including deep fried squash. HEC – Chefs take on ham, egg and chips with home cured bresaola, hens egg and watercress.
The Pony & Trap, located in Chew Magna, just outside Bristol, has a strong reputation and a Michelin Star, and when I booked myself a lunch there, I expected 'the usual': a nice country pub with some well cooked food using more or less local ingredients but not too much more. What I found was a super star in the kitchen and food that was stunning. In the kitchen is owner Josh Eggleton, a young, energetic and entrepreneurial chef who is sure to become an even bigger name in UK food going forward. What was really fantastic about Josh and his food is how connected it is to his local environment. In talking about his dishes, he would tell me who supplied what and then point and say 'his farm is 500 yards that way' or 'that white house up there on the hill'. That connection to the immediate farming community put me in mind of the likes of Simon Rogan, with the connection not ending there, for Josh is similarly looking to not only grow more of his own produce but even to rear chickens and
We had a lovely meal here, arrived early and had a few cocktails which we enjoyed in the beautiful quiet garden with nice views, our food was fantastic and the wine complemented it well. Finished it off with a few more delicious cocktails including probably the best espresso martini I’ve had and a lovely pudding with a candle in it to mark my wife’s birthday. The service was very warm and friendly and I thought that £100 per head for a table of 5, although a pricey Wednesday night meal, was very reasonably considering the standard. They also do a more reasonably priced ‘pub food menu’ which I thought was a nice touch in a place of this quality. Overall highly recommend.
The Pony completely exceeded our (admittedly already pretty high expectations). We went for the chefs taster menu and were impressed with every course. We were there celebrating our engagement and were treated amazingly well. Can't recommend highly enough, was lovely to meet the head chef too 😊
Found this place by chance. Popped in for a drink and stayed for dinner. Ate near the bar but the restaurant downstairs looked amazing. Excellent food and great service!
First visit. Reassuringly expensive.Visited on a Sunday and there is a set 3 course. Upon entering you are welcomed by a fresh airy dining room with plenty of light and a stunning view.Staff were very attentive and the food was very tasty. Portion size was good.I wish I’d been seated away from the bar as that’s where the waiting staff congregate and it felt a little awkward.
We had our wedding breakfast at Pony Chew Valley following our registry office ceremony, and the experience left an indelible mark on our hearts. I find myself constantly reminiscing about just how perfect it all was.
Holly and the team's attention to detail and commitment to ensuring everything ran flawlessly was remarkable. The canapés were such a hit the trays barely got to me, but the team provided my new husband and me with a specially made vegan tart, which was the perfect bite of flavours.
Working with Holly and Josh on a specially curated menu made our wedding unforgettable - the way the team included my beloved Filipino dish had our guests praising the food for weeks afterwards, and we couldn't have been happier with the selection.
If you're seeking a venue that combines exceptional planning, a delectable menu, and outstanding service, Pony Chew Valley is what you need.
Truly stunning food! The best scallops I have ever eaten. If you can make a trip here then you should. The staff are wonderful and truly hospitable. The gardens are beautiful. I can't wait to come back.
Really lovely meal, food was excellent, the service was great, felt quite cosy and not at all pretentious. The views outside are amazing.
The renovation is lovely. Nice & open showing the stunning view with a terrace.
Food was gorgeous as always & no faults with the very friendly waitresses.
Only thing that surprised me was the torn & stained carpet. But I'm sure that's already in plans to fix.
Definitely going again soon.
A fantastic feast for the eyes and the taste buds from the garden to the food on the plate. The excellent friendly service provided by the staff and their attention to detail made time itself disappear.
Such a wonderful place to go for a meal. The food is absolutely amazing, the atmosphere feels very homely yet special and very reflective of the fantastic views. I’ve always found the staff to be knowledgable, helpful and kind, and we’ve loved the beautiful gardens. The values of the owners are reflected in the building, food, decor and events. The price is always a bit on the treat end for us, but always absolutely worth the money and never feels too expensive for what you get. Highly recommend.
