Nice place. Elegant restaurant with a distinctly classy feel. Good selections of wine and worthy of a trip for a 'decent plate of food'. Excellent winesand cheeses.

Judging purely on the Sunday lunch experience the food was on the whole extremely good and competitively priced.

Lets not get territorial my fellow dwellers of Mancunia. We must unite in golden triangular formation with our Pudlian and Chestonian brethren. Together we really are the best region in the country!!! It is thus without a hint of territorial superiority complex I present to you 1539. Look, fact of the matter is, as much as I LOVE Madchester, I'm a sucker for a visit to Chester and the Pool. It takes me back to our Roman adventure of a trip at school. I have a soft spot for Chester and all it has to offer in its cute little Roman package. To this day I reserve numerous ganders a year wondering the walls of Chester with friends or family to collate my thoughts or share the peaceful nature of the activity. As I do so, one of the images that hover in mind is that of Chester Racecourse. Being not much of a gambler myself I am oblivious to the excitement of racedays, the restaurant attached however is right up my avenue and it is this restaurant that I finally present to you fellow yelpers on this fine tintin snowy day. If I had a pound for the number of browny points I have gained for taking the lady somewhere different for a candle lit dinner I'd have decent pocket change for a meal here!! The place ooozes va va voom and the glass-fronted restaurant boasts a panoramic view across the racecourse, which is serene even in the winter. The summery months of July and August are perfectly made for the outdoor decking area offering al fresco dining. While it is contemporary British cooking being served here I don't for once hold it against them. For while I am more inclined towards other worldly cuisines 1539 does serve up grub to my liking. The spiral staircase to the Ruinart is something that will really impress your dinner guests here, as I've pleasently found in the past. I've been told its the oldest Champagne House in the world exclusively producing premium champagne since 1729. While majority of you will find this to be irrelevant, frankly I don't particularly care much either, however history does intrigue me oh so much as you all know. The roof is bang on for pre/post dinner drinks though I wouldn't say so at this particular juncture of the year, with us going through a North pole faze in the UK. My recommended course of action would be arrival Sunday mid-morning for a walk around the Chester wall concluding at 1539 doorsteps for a spot of Sunday Lunch. At a rudimentary £25 per couple(2 courses) expect a decent helping indeed. Being an avid fan of the "Pomegranate", there is a salad which has plenty of it as a starter as well as pear, pistachio and Pant-Ysgawn goats cheese. Good old fish n chips for the main should be rounded off by a nice Vanilla panna cotta avec fresh berries at which point you'll be good to go for the 2nd leg of your Chester wall walk to the car. That's just me though, make your own schedule for your visit to Chester and 1539, you will not regrettez pas! Chamon

Lovely place with great view of the race course. Really good red wine selection - the pinotage from South Africa brilliant! As it is northern custom, the portions very generous. One of the steak portions was very chewy, case of a bad cut nonetheless staff handled well, offered a fresh plate which we declined plus it wasn't added to the bill. Staff provided efficient service .. all in all.. was a good dinner p.s the cheese board is definitely worth a try!

Photos do not do the food, cocktails and view justice. Amazing food and cocktails. First time in a restaurant since lockdown and it was perfect. I would highly recommend. Staff are a credit to the organisation. Also if you have any allergies, they are amazing with you. I am anaphylaxis and allergic to nuts and peanuts, I usually feel apprehensive and an inconvenience however they put me at ease and went out their way. I even had a pudding which was guaranteed not to contain nuts - which is rare!! Anyway get yourself booked in.

Lovely setting overlooking the race course. PLenty of staff, enquired about the ingredients of the cocktails, first server gave wrong info. Food presented beautifully, the fillet steak was delicious. Then the staff seemed to leave us be, didn't come and ask if we wanted more drinks or desserts? Service great to start and just seemed to tail off slightly at the end .. but a very nice meal and restaurant

Very friendly and professional staff, temperature checked upon arrival and lead to our table. The menu was slightly limited but food was amazing. After the meal we retired to the roof terrace for cocktails, it was a very comfortable setting with outside heaters, a fire pit and blankets a plenty. We're looking forward to our next visit.

My mum and I have just enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea which was amazing. The staff were absolutely lovely and could not do more for you and the manager took the time to go round and chat to each table fantastic service. The venue is stunning overlooking the iconic Chester racecourse with a luxurious interior. Would highly recommend

A Sunday Lunch in the build up to Xmas.. and what a meal it was.. my party of seven was served with a myriad of choices of quality tasty food. Three courses at a very reasonable price. Sensible priced wine choices. Restaurant staff were exceptional.. attired in crisp black and white uniform.. they were attentive but not intrusive.. just right. 1539 has definitely returned to the premier venue in Chester for a fine dining experience at a very affordable price. Can't wait for our next visit in the New Year 2023. Well done all.
