We often go to Chester-le-Street from North Shields just to dine at the Cafe as Allison, Paul, Neil and staff are so friendly and welcoming. The menu, which we have sampled quite a few variations of are excellent. The scones are so gorgeous we always bring some home with us. It is a fantastic experience.

Great home made food, all freshly made. The portions are really generous. A great selection of cakes and scones. Service is excellent, everyone is friendly and helpful. If it's just a cuppa and a piece of cake, or a full english breakfast you want, this is the place to come. Always busy, so be prepared to wait for a table, but it's worth it.

Visited this cafe today for afternoon tea. We were delighted with the friendly service. Warm and welcoming staff. Unlimited refills on our drinks. Great value for money. Everything was freshly made and tasted delicious. We were given boxes to carry the two cakes we didn’t mange to eat home with us. You must book in advance for afternoon tea and it’s served from 2.30pm. Highly recommended.

Came in for breakfast - very pleasant traditional cafe with friendly accommodating staff. We were served a generous plateful of excellent locally sourced food in a nice relaxed atmosphere, and will definitely visit again. If you want food or just a cuppa, ignore all the soulless corporate chains and come here.

Got the last table when we went in this morning , had full cooked breakfast each and a large pot of tea. Quality food and quality staff. Very friendly, great banter and will definitely be back . Susie, Alison and Ian all introduced themselves and nothing was too much trouble. Susan that cooked the breakfast is obviously worth her weight in gold. If you get the chance , pop in. Wide menu with delicious food.

I go to Passingtime regularly and have never had anything other than excellent service and food. The cafe is clean and pleasant and the staff are always very helpful and make you feel welcome. The meals are good value for money and are well presented. Portion sizes are good and hot food is hot! For a small establishment the choice on the menu is very good. Paul always has a smile on his face and makes you feel like your custom is important to him. I would certainly recommend Passingtime to anyone.

Great fresh food in a lovely cosy cafe. Scones are amazing, always get some to home for later. Broth and dumplings highly recommended, and the huge pots of tea are much appreciated!

Pleased to say Passingtime Cafe is still open for take aways (only closed Wed). The take away Sunday lunches are exceptionally good. Called today for a coffee and sandwich. Excellent. Thank you Paul and staff.

There is no place in Chester-le-Street that comes anywhere near the excellence of this cafe. The food is often home made or locally sourced. The staff are friendly and bend over backwards to tend to individual needs and diets. The only fault is that there are never enough tables for the queue of people trying to get in.
