Fantastic evening and enjoyed the first guest chef evening tasting menu with Bradley Walford, exceptional food, great wine pairings and a superb atmosphere hosted by Simon & Norma. Highly recommend a visit. Can’t wait for more of these evenings in the future
Just had a fantastic meal at this Pub, a hidden gem in Chawton. A must visit if you are in Jane Austen’s county.
Spent a great evening with others enjoying ourselves with guest chef Bradley Walford, a special thank you has to go to Simon and Norma for organising the event and to their staff for making us all so welcome.

Food was amazing and staff so friendly and helpful
Magnífico lugar para disfrutar de la comida y de unas cervezas en un precioso pub en un entorno novelesco. Los dueños encantadores.
Worth the stop!. We stopped after seeing the Jane Austen House, despite my concern at eating at an establishment directly across from a tourist attraction. No worries, the food and service here were excellent! The sausage and mash I had was plenty and quite tasty and my five year old loved his fish and chips.
Friendly staff, excellent food and good range of real ales
Visited this pup in passing recently and it was really traditional and cosy. Plenty of seating for a Friday evening and the outside area was buzzing with a good atmosphere.
We didn't order food so can't comment. The drinks were quite pricey, but normal, I guess, for the moment.
Staff were friendly and the toilets adequate.
Young, friendly and vibrant staff. Really tasty homemade chicken burger, full of flavour. A nice change from the usual frozen burgers you get in other pubs. Service was very friendly and helpful, not in your face. We were even treated to a complementary amuse bouche. Would go back again.
Lovely pub. Had never been in before, but came in for a family meal last week, staff were very welcoming and the food was absolutely exceptional, highly recommended 👌
Had a fabulous dinner here last night!
The young man behind the bar was so nice and funny too. The “Chicken Supreme” was indeed supreme, fresh and perfectly done. The sticky toffee pudding was to die for. Such a cozy spot too. Highly recommend!
My partner and I have just moved to Alton. We thought we’d try what is technically our local after a long walk with the pooches. I don’t often write review especially negative ones but I’m more than happy to write this one. I managed a pub for 10 years so I’m obviously going to be (to my detriment) possibly overly critical at times, not that I ever complain however this place is an establishment to be proud of.
From the second we walked in we were welcomed, all the staff were happy and the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. The manager squeezed us in even though we hadn’t booked and the service was prompt and professional. Well mannered locals enjoying a pint at the bar (exactly as it should be) and all the other diners appeared perfectly content.
I think the only delay was us trying to decide what to order from their menu which clearly suggests skilled and experienced chefs in their kitchen.
This pub could accommodate a quick pint and a plate of fish and chips from the bar menu or a nice bottle of wine from their extensive wine selection whilst sharing cote de boeuf for a more special occasion.
I’m smiling whilst writing this review because It’s not often a pub ticks all the boxes for me and this one happens to now be on my doorstep.
A proper friendly local pub!
From wellies to waistcoats everyone we saw enter was equally welcomed.
Thank you and very well done 👏

A superb dining experience, really great service, lovely food, good ales on tap and a great setting. We were a couple with very few in the pub that night, treated to a complementary amuse Bouche, a delicious cauliflower cheese soup. My king prawns and then fish & chips were excellent, my wife’s halloumi fries, then whipped goats cheese with honeycomb and walnut salad was superb. Really good friendly, cheerful efficient service.
Just had a sensational three course Sunday lunch! Food was sensational - beautifully presented, great quality and thoughtfully sourced. Atmosphere warm and welcoming, staff lovely. Also a great destination after a beautiful countryside stomp.
Surprisingly busy pub for a Wednesday lunchtime. Good music, food food and a nice atmosphere. Deffo recommended, and opposite Jame Austen's house if that floats your boat.....
This is a lovely pub, conveniently located just opposite the Jane Austen House Museum. Great food, spacious garden, very friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend the fish and chips.
Excellent lunch in an oldy worldy pub in a charming village. We could have ordered off the main menu which offered I think 2 courses for £12 or 3 courses for £18 but we chose the lunch menu. I had a ploughman's which came with 2 types of cheese: a sharp cheddar and something else that was orange in colour with blue veins. Two large hunks of bread (we had to ask for butter), a pickled onion, an apple, salady stuff, and unusually, prosciutto. My companions had a steak flatbread with caramelized onions which she pronounced delicious, and a goat's cheese salad, equally delicious.
Really nice meal, food and service. Booked online and all was ready for us. Roast was really good but even better maybe if a separate pot of (more) gravy, all yorkshires had risen and pork cane with crackling. Cheesy veg was great though and really enjoyed the bbq smokiness on the pork. Huge portion of crumble and custard that even had my teenage son beat. Service and welcome great, fresh water brought to table without asking . Thanks.
Excellent food and happy staff! What a funny, witty young barman and a charming, accommodating, clever young chef! 👌
