We came here on the way back from Carlisle, many times we have driven past while on holiday in the area, and said one day we will stop for food, well today was the day we stopped, we can say it was worth it, great food and plenty of it, good service.
A handy stop off for a quality chip shop…
This place is quirky but that’s why I like it, it really feels somewhat like an old American style diner - it could be because I somewhat remember it as a Little Chef but there’s just something that feels nostalgic about Johns Plaice.

Absolutely lovely fish and chips. Batter crispy not greasey. Had the pensioners deal with mushy peas, tea and bread and butter. At 10.95 in August 2023, I think that's pretty damn good. The place is a bit dated, hey its been there a while but it was spotlessly clean and staff were very nice. Give i
It's probably the best fish and chips we've had recently. My girls who can be pretty fussy. One had turkey dinosaurs, chips and gravy and the other had sausage and gravy. All completely finished.
My good lady had cod and chips, the batter was so tasty and light.

Have been passing by this eatery, but never stopped, always said the next time. Glad I stopped, the fish was very tasty, I had Cod, the wife got the Haddock. Will be stopping off next time I pass.
November 2021: I was passing by John's on my way home at the right time so I decided to stop here for an easy dinner. Try the Seniors Special, great value for the smaller appetite.
Great service, great range, great food and great prices. Absolutely spot on and we'll worth a visit. Will be going back soon.

Excellent Fish and Chips with superb service, did however feel like eating in a crèche with toddler’s being a little noisy at times, but not enough to put us off visiting again.
Always call here when I'm going to West Cumbria. Good sized portions and very tasty. Staff are always helpful and friendly.
It makes lovely fish and chips. I love it no other meals, so I like ice to go there at lunchtime, it’s plenty of car spaces and for disabled to Friendly staff just what you like, you can get it I do hope you enjoy your meals when you are there. Thank you for listening
Great food here, very tasty. Polite staff. It was raining hard and all the other customers were sheltering in there like drowned rats which put a downer on things, but not my problem (or the staffs).

Fish batter is outstanding - really crispy. I had my fish with a full salad and no chips (though you can have salad as a side). Salad crisp and fresh. Visited twice in one week!

Had a really lovely meal here with a decent cup of tea and coffee. Called in here on returning from wildlife park. Great social distancing and hygiene so felt extremely comfortable to eat here staff are lovely definitely worth a visit if you're passing
