Le Monde serves exceptional fresh seafood and if you are tired of meats, I recommend that you step into this restaurant. From prawns, lobsters and mussels to monkfish and trout, it has it all. The preparations are diverse too - from traditional grills to Thai curries. We found the monkfish in lemon butter outstanding! The prices are a bit steep and I found the lighting somewhat uninspiring. The restaurant also has this strange norm that unless the starters have been finished, they wouldn't bring the main course. Good we asked after having lost our patience somewhat as one of us was content with just a starter for herself as she wasn't really hungry. Cost for a couple approx £60.
The sea bass, as always, was absolutely perfect. Baked sea bass is a favourite of mine, and I’ve eaten it in many, many places, but nowhere has ever beaten Le Monde on quality. It was filleted at our table, after the thick layer of rock salt was removed, and between us we only found one small bone left in the fish. I’m not a huge fan of new potatoes, but Mr W is, and he waxed lyrical (pun intended) about how lovely and waxy they were – apparently the sign of a good new potato! Similarly, the French bread was beautifully fresh – crusty on the outside and soft and light in the middle. To accompany our meal we had a bottle (okay, we actually had two!) of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc, nice and crisp and refreshing – a perfect complement to the delicate flavour of the sea bass.
I eat fish in many different countries but I have to say the Brill I had here was just that BRILL!
Perfectly cooked ,fresh and simply presented.
OK the décor is a bit sombre but the service was good and the food fabulous
I will be back
What I like about this restaurant is that I know how clean the kitchen is! There is a JobShop at our university which sends students to employers for random one-off jobs. One day I got sent to Le Monde, to be a waitress for a big event they were hosting - something about the launch of a new wine? Someone did tell me but I didn't really listen that well...
Anyway, so I know from that experience that the food is prepared well and safely. Not that I usually worry but it's an extra point.
The food here is quite pricey but I do feel that it's really worth it. Sometimes you've just got to splash the cash a little to get some decent food. And it's worth it. I left feeling full of light, delicious, high-standard cuisine.
The service was also great. Full marks all round, Le Monde!
I love fish! not the fish that swim in the sea, the slippery type that nibble at your feet eerrrggghhh they upset me.
What i mean, is i love to eat fish...all fish, including my guilty pleasure fish cakes but i'll get to that in another review!
And, if you like to eat fish head to the hidden, dark wonder that is Le Monde!
Although incredibly pricey if your a fish fan (are you fed up about hearing about fish yet?) head here.
The place is slightly dimly lit and a little scary if you go in when its light and come out and its dark. I'm not overly fussed on confusion.
Service is good and if i'm honest i do get a little affected once in Le Monde, 'One is a fish fan, see?' It's got that top notch type of feeling to it; 'Yes darling!'
Plenty of wine on offer and there are other options other than the tailed and finned type but go for the fish...please!
Be warned; do not go if your a Finding Nemo fan!!! plop, plop.
Went here on a work lunch and loved it the moment i stepped through the door. Atmosphere is perfect, food is immense and service is second to none. There's quirky little nic naks all around the place, even a bell from the Titanic. Best place to eat in Cardiff by a mile.
Staff wonderful! Location excellent! Food absoloutely delicious! What more could you ask for? Definately will return to this great restaurant and I recommend it to everyone.
After trying for a while to get a table at Le Monde we finally went there this week. Firstly it was really busy on a Monday night with hardly any tables free - which is a great sign.
I’ve always been a fan of the Martinez family restaurants so I knew what to expect in terms of the menu and food.
The atmosphere and the style of the restaurant was impressive, with the best wine selection I’ve seen in any Cardiff restaurant.
Service was 10/10. Our waiter had a real eye for detail, and was attentive but very professional.
Food was amazing, wine was perfect. Would highly recommend.
This is one of those really interesting places to eat. I'm not really interested in restaurants where you have to stand staring at a board to choose what you fancy eating. But at Le Monde, you have to.
There is a board to choose your starters, and mains. But there's a fish counter where you choose your desired fish to be taken away and cooked to your liking with optional sauces, vegetables or a great salad selection.
My wife chose the fish soup and I had the homemade fishcakes. Followed by swordfish steaks. The food here is cooked to perfection but, be warned, this place is busy, busy, busy. So you need to book in advance and don't expect a quiet romantic meal, but professionalism you will get.
I would definitely come back here if I were to visit Cardiff again.
Le Monde is a Cardiff institution, and I can understand why. Service, food, wine, and atmosphere are all spot on.
Selection and quality of seafood and meat is hard to beat anywhere else in the city. The wine list is very extensive.
Highly recommend a visit for any special occasion, or as a treat.
Great restaurant in the middle of Cardiff. Food was great and the menu was exciting. Really enjoyed the process of going up to the counter and choosing the food fresh from the counter, made it a more interesting dining experience. Although, we did sit there for about an hour waiting for a menu because we didn’t realise you had to go up and read the board for the menu’s instead of getting a paper menu in front of you - that’s a reflection on our own idiocy not the restaurant. Previously hired the top private room for a corporate function and it was a perfect venue.
Lovely Welcoming, Beautiful Fresh Fish Displays & Good Service.
Me & My Dad Had Lobster....
Stunning 😍
Fantastic food.
I love sea food and I was happy to come across Le monde when I first arrived in town. I had the famous salt baked sea bass and honestly, it couldn’t be better.
I came back the day after to try the oysters and the scallops and once again i had a great experience.
The quality of the ingredients stands out and the service is 5 starts. I was served by a waiter called Renan who was kind and ready to answer all my food lover questions about the menu.
If you are in Cardiff I strongly recommend a visit.
A superb experience at Le Monde. Choice of fish and meat is amazing. Lovely vibe in the restaurant. The best selection of wine in Wales. Would recommend.
Was really busy so took about 5mins before the host could check us in.
You have to order at the fish/meat counter which I found slightly annoying during this pandemic. No social distancing and the restaurant was super busy. However the food was really good, especially the oysters. They do a two course special menu which is great value. Portion size was enormous.
Visited this place a few times now for a date night with my mrs, I must say we are always extremely impressed with the quality of food but most importantly how attentive & friendly the staff are. As soon as your through the door your treated with smiles & a happy atmosphere.
The restaurant features lovely art deco styled theme with an open kitchen which is immaculate. You can go up and select the exact cut of meat or fish you’d like which I think is amazing
The wine selection here is great and they have a lot to choose from but if your stuck then ask the staff as they are extremely knowledgeable about the wine pairing.
If your visiting cardiff definitely make a reservation as you won’t be disappointed this place is a real gem
A busy restaurant with attentive staffs to cater for you needs.Food looked so appetizing before I start…that my stomach began to rumble. The slow cook lamb is properly cooked & seasoned, leaving a pleasant aftertaste in your mouth. Simple is the best, better all the rest. Finger-licking
Le Monde, Cardiff
Lively atmosphere for the discerning diner and those looking for a good experience. I am so glad I did the rare thing of booking a table even though Maitre De felt I didn't need to as the place was heaving when I got there. I was warmly welcomed by the Maitre De who told me there was a 20 minute wait and then he
escorted me to the bar where I ordered a Merlot. I asked if there was anyone who could advise on a wine choice for the Venison I was hankering for. I was informed they did have a Sommelier (A sommelier, or wine steward, is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional, normally working in fine restaurants, who specializes in all aspects of wine service as well as wine and food pairing- Wikipedia) who produced a wine list and recommended a wonderful wine, that went well with the venison. I was taken to my table, my wine was served. I was escorted to the meats counter where I was shown the different meats and fish that were on display for cooking that day. I ordered venison, broccoli with oyster sauce, new potatoes in butter.
The Venison was medium rare, succulent, served in peppercorn sauce, red cabbage, broccoli was served with oyster sauce, new potatoes.
Wine paired was excellent
Service was excellent (5/5) at least 4 people asked if I wanted dessert menu and coffee.
For dessert I ordered creme brulee with coffee with cream. The creme brulee was served in a cute small copper based frying pan.
My overall experience 5/5. I had a really good evening and enjoyed the food, atmosphere and the service. I really had a very evening.
It doesn't get better than that.
It was really good. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about wine, and recommended a really really nice dry white wine for our meal.
I can't wait to go back and eat the food again. It was so filling and I defo dreamt about it that night.
The only reason it isn't 5 stars is due to the level of noise in the restaurant. It was to the point where I left while my partner waited for the bill.
When we go back will definelty have to enquire to sit in a different area of the restaurant than the bar area.
Excellent food and service, couldn't ask for better. We come here regularly, menu has plenty of options. First class.
Went with 16 friends for a special birthday . I had the beef medallions which were 10/10 . Sme if the party had fish which they said was superb . Service was excellent staff went out of the way to enhance the experience . Ended up upstairs for a dance . . Perfect celebration
Very central well established brasserie style restaurant. I went on a an event day at the Principality Stadium so the restaurant was running a limted match day menu. I had a sirloin which was cooked well. Staff were friendly and service was fine.
Me and my boyfriend visited le monde on a busy satruday we were greeted by the wonderful staff, our waitress Amelia was great help and provided us with great service, we really appreciated all the staff who made us feel special in the middle of a very busy evening, the food was excellent and top standard, would visit again for sure. Again thank you to all the staff and wonderfull chefs
