Frankly, it’s a little embarrassing that it’s taken me so long to get around to visiting Bangkok Café. This Canton-based Thai restaurant is a bit of a Cardiff institution, and I’ve only heard good things about it during the years I’ve been writing the blog. Unsurprisingly, there's substance behind the recommendations. Major positives include a relaxed and modern dining space; friendly and efficient service; a menu chock-full of interesting dishes ; liberal portions; and most importantly, excellent Thai food. A brace of Singhas provided chilli relief during the meal. To start I ordered Yam Ner (£5.50), spicy beef salad – a mountain of tender seared beef, spring onions, tomatoes and cucumber were bathed in a fragrant dressing of chilli, lime, coriander and fish sauce. So moreish was the dressing that I poured the leftovers straight down my hatch. Mrs G ordered Bor Bia Sot (£4.50), rice noodle rolls filled with beansprouts, tofu and Thai basil and topped with a sticky, sweet and sour tama
It's a Thai restaurant that uses a Thai chef to make it. The taste is quite Thai, but you can tell the restaurant what level of spiciness you want. The food is very delicious. The owner of the restaurant is kind and gives free watermelon. Eat specially too.
Nice food and staff were attentive, food was hot and fast. In my opinion not the best Thai in Cardiff but good for a quick bite. Starter, main and alcohol drink looking around £30 each,.so not cafe prices.
One of the most authentic Thai food places you could find in Cardiff. They even have an exclusive vegan section in their menu.
We tried their corn fritters, spring rolls and some spicy Dom yum salad for starters. Tofu Massaman curry, Jackfruit jungle curry and Dowhoo pat parik curry for mains.
The lady who attended us was lovely and welcoming.
The price was reasonable, attaching the bill for reference and they accept cash only.
Parking available at the Canton carpark, a few meters away from the cafe, which is free after 6pm.
Delicious freshly cooked food, great size portions and plenty of choice.
Will be back!
Lovely little Thai place in Canton, the food was amazing and very reasonably priced too. The service was very fast and the staff were pleasant. I had the Chicken Pad Thai and would highly recommend!
Delicious Thai food all reasonably priced. Separate vegan menu which is great. Online booking system needs updating to allow larger party bookings, had difficulty getting through on the phone and email.
Lovely vegan Thai food which is really reasonably priced. They have a separate section for vegans which is awesome. We had the corn cakes, soup and Pad Thai. Everything was delicious. Staff are very friendly as well.
Stunning food - both in taste and visually. Fantastic range of options for vegans. A really great local Thai restaurant.

Booked a table for 4, ended up being late and they happily changed our reservation last minute with no issue. Food was absolutely top notch. Delicious starters, mains and sides. Not just typical UK "Thai"food, but had all the classics. Atmosphere was good. Well worth a visit for the food
Went for dinner this evening with my family. Had a lovely meal. The green curry, penang curry and the massaman were very good. The grilled duck was good but a bit dry so was the spare ribs. Veg spring rolls was very good. Attentive but unobtrusive service.
A place worth going if you want good Thai food.
Delightful Dinner
My partner and I went to the Bangkok Café for my birthday meal. With the demise of our favourite – the Thai House – we decided we would stay with the Thai tradition at the café owned by the same family.
The less formal style of the Café made the meal very relaxing and the food was delicious.
We started with Dom Yam Gung – a delicious and spicy prawn soup with lemon grass and galangal. A lovely warming bowl of deliciousness was a great start to the meal.
We then shared three starters – Bor Bia Sot, Bla Muk Tord and Larb Gai – The tamarind flavour of the Bor Bia was wonderful, the crispy calamari of the bla muk tord was perfect with the chilli sauce and the minced chicken came in lovely lettuce leaves making them so easy to eat. All of them were delicious.
For mains, my partner went for Bed Grapow, duck with tulsi (thai basil) and chillies with a yellow rice and steamed veg. As with the other elements of the meal the balance of flavours were perfect and the food fresh and crisp. My main course was Gai Yang Som Dam, a roast chicken dish with a sharp and taste som dam salad and sticky rice. I’ve been eating Thai food for thirty years, and I am still surprised by the richness of the flavour.
Overall the Bangkok Café turned out to be a tasty experience in a simple setting, we will be back.
Yea decent enough food especially the king prawns was super nice.
