Nice and reasonably priced place in Cardiff city centre to have Indian food. Had a plate of Biriyani (veg) for 8.5 pounds- Raitha was included. Quantity and taste was good. Very close to Cardiff Castle and high street.

Chai Street Cardiff bay would for sure catch your attention when you are passing by the lanes in Cardiff bay!
Reasons the flashy decor, Colourful theme and Indian menu - they do serve some great Tea - Indian Version

Decor - 4/5
Loved the flashy bright vibrant decor this place has.
Its converted to a well lit place that seems like a  Dhabha - with open trucks
then at the entrance we have a bar at the entrance. and then the seating options are quite comfortable too
The place has bollywood theme to it and has some old posters of Sunildutt and other bollywood actors movie posters .
They play some good bollywood numbers that adds up to the theme

Food -4/5- we choose to try the vegetarian biryani and Chicken handi biryani
The biryanis were served along with curd raitha papad and some pickle
The mix veg pickle did not go well with the biryani though
The curd raitha is great again.
Then comes the main show stealer biryani
The vegetarian version is a mix of all veggies paired with some delectable spices like cardamom , dalchini and the rice used to cook is basmati
the rice is really aromatic and tasted good
Then comes the chicken biryani the meat is cooked well and has loads of simple spices.
then rice is a bit over cooked but liked it as it tasted great.

WE tried some drinks on the menu and they are pretty descent

The bill came up to 25 pounds of two of us with drinks
Service -4/5
The staff in here are dutiful
and polite
they make sure they do the needful and are attentive too

VFM - 4/5
Keeping in mind the location , the taste of food and service this place deserves a big round of applause
The food options are quite good. Will come back soon to try out their other delicacies.
Bon appetite friends

Full marks for the retro bollywood decor and the peppy Punjabi music! Great location, situated very close to the Cardiff Castle.
I ordered their version of the chicken 65 which was great. For main course I ordered lamb biryani which was a tad disappointing.

Southern Indian food is one of Cardiff’s strongest suits.  Purple Poppadom , Mint & Mustard , Kumar’s , Spice Berry , Chaiholics and The Duchess of Delhi all predominantly serve south Indian cuisine that ranges from the good to the outstanding. Mint & Mustard were the pioneers back in 2007 and now they’ve resurrected Chai Street , their cheap-eat concept which used to live next door to the mothership on Whitchurch Road. The relocation to Canton seems like an obvious move - the restaurants no longer stealing business of each other. The décor is a charming mix of Bollywood posters, vibrant colours and reclaimed wood. The menu meanwhile focuses on street food snacks, kati rolls and their famous thalis. A mango lassi was ultra-thick, ice cold and fragrant (£2.95). Pav bhaji (£4.95) wasn’t much on the eye but was moreish as heck. A toasted roll was served with minced potato in a spicy and buttery tomato-based gravy. If you’d told me it was keema I’d have believed you, such was its depth of flavour. However at £4.95, the price seemed a bit steep.  A trio of samosas (£3.75) were crisp, grease-free and loaded with filling – spicy minced lamb, milder minced chicken and oozy cheese. A side salad or some chutney wouldn’t have gone amiss though.

My husband and I visited this place tonight from seeing great reviews online. The service was excellent and the food was delicious! Nice chill atmosphere. I think next time we're in Cardiff and are craving Indian... we'll skip the overly formal places and easily eat here hands down! I enjoyed the Mango lassi and the lamb platter. My husband and I both got separate plates, but our friends shared one and were just fine. Felt full at the end... and already looking forward to eating here again!

This place is good value and you’ll leave not feeling like you might pass out from curry intoxication. Yes, you could call the portions small, but I love drinking after a curry and so this suited me fine. I’d go again!

Went here for the first time today, after being recommended to me a number of times. We absolutely loved it. Friendly staff, the best food I've had in a very long time. Will be visiting again very soon! Thank you for a great meal.

The restaurant is now Mattancherry, had seafood, vegetarian thali, enjoyed the hot food with Indian flavour which is hard to find. Ramkrishnan the co-owner was very cooperative, it was pleasant visit🙂

The decor here really stands out. A lot of Indian restaurants play it safe with white table cloths and a sanitary aesthetic to match. Chai Street decides to welcome you into India with wooden tables, incandescent-style bulbs, Bollywood posters anywhere your eyes look, and the music to suit! The food was pretty awesome, we got the Special Thali and the Indian Lemonade. Can't say enough good about the lemonade - great tanginess and sweetness. The Thali is a dish which comes with four different curries, rice, naan, and a potato samosa. An awesome idea when you can't decide on which curry to commit to.

Amazing thali, food was very authentic. Decor gives a great ambience. This is now my favourite Indian restaurant in Wales. Would highly recommend.

I went there during my weekend in Cardiff. Staff is friendly and polite, might be also a mind reading (as they asked always the right questions and came up with suggestions which I loved). Food was hot. I liked it. I truly enjoyed my experience there. Decor is great as well. I love the variety of choices for vegan and vegetarian guests. Thank you for making my evening amazing.

definitely still the best chai street out there, taste never fails and seems like they have the old express thalis back on the menu with a remake

I have been coming here since it opened. Chai street has always been an absolutely fantastic place to eat. The food is amazing and the service is second to none. This was proven to me again today when I ordered a take away through a third party app. My food was delivered to the wrong address and subsequently never arrived. The Chai street staff we absolutely amazing at sorting it out for me, even though it is not their responsibility once they have given the food to the delivery driver. I cannot recommend this place enough both for the service and the food. If I could give more then 5 stars I would.

Delicious food, fresh and tasty. Friendly service and great decor and atmosphere. Will definitely go back! The thali is smaller than others I've had, so you'll need a starter and /or dessert, but it's all reasonably priced so that's fine, you get the chance to try more dishes!
