Reviews Calabrisella Canton

Calabrisella isn’t much of a looker. With its brick effect wallpaper, budget furniture and tatty bits of paper plastered across its windows, you could easily mistake this Canton-based Italian eatery for a greasy spoon caff and give it a miss. However, if you did that then you’d be depriving yourself of some of the best Italian food in Cardiff. Whilst pizzas are the forte of the house, breakfasts, sandwiches, pastas and other daily specials feature on the menu – there were two types of calamari and a steak on offer the night we visited. To start, a whopper of a golden crumbed arancino (£2) erupted with perfectly cooked risotto (each grain still distinct), oozy cheese and meaty Bolognese. A pair of beers – a Peroni red (£2.50) and an Ichnusa (£2.50) – brought memories of holidays in Italy flooding back.  Pizzas were stunning, each comprised of a golden crust and a millimetre thin base topped with perky tomato sauce and melted mozzarella. They were also the size of a car tyre. For Mrs G, a Roma (£8.50) topped with tender chicken, mushrooms and funky, creamy gorgonzola. For me, a Calabrisella (£10.90) capped with unctuous, fiery nduja sausage and sundried tomatoes with a pleasing bite.

Delicious. Best food we’ve had, and we’ve been here 7 months. The first place we agreed had real pizza. Incredible. Immaculate. The service was amazing too, very fast.

Just unbelievable ! This is the best Italian food I’ve ever tasted. We went Rome, Naples and Pisa and nothing was near this place. The atmosphere is fantastic and always made to feel part of the family. If you have not checked it out it’s a must.

Really reasonably priced, fresh and tasty Italian food. Casual Cafe style setting. The arancini starter was delicious, the lasagne was fresh and a perfect size portion! The dessert was so fresh and light! The Staff were friendly and welcoming, really nice that they brought water to the table without us requesting it! Will definitely return 😊

Food was great. The seating is a bit tight but the food makes up for it.

Fantastic restaurant, conveniently located near Gray street car park. Helpful and friendly staff serving outstanding food. Very clean inside with good provisions for social distancing, helping to keeping both customers and staff safe. I will visit here regularly, a very authentic taste of Italy. highly recommended, even if you're just after a coffee while browsing along Cowbridge road.

A delightful experience. Excellent service and food. A superb place for a family get-together and birthday celebration. They even organised a cake and light switch-off for the candles. Highly recommended.
