Great atmosphere , friendly staff , excellent food ,lovely ales on tap. One of the best places in Canterbury . would recommend
I've never been here before but visited with some friends for the retro night and it was brilliant! The staff were really friendly and there was plenty of them so you never had to wait too long to get a drink even when the place was packed! Very clean and the toilets were decent too which is a bonus! Great place I'll definitely be back.
Really nice pub, cheap drinks and food! And a good place to watch the footie!!
One of the best places we have found... Best food I have ever tasted and to top it off some great staff and fun games and pool too...
Amazing every time I have organised an event here Christmas and our end of year 1 celebration !!brilliant food, drink and staff. We will definitely be visiting again !!
Once again went too to The Penny theatre for Foo fighters GB gig never disappoints friendly staff cracking food and drink great venue
Good sports bar and the food is great with a relaxed atmosphere. You can take your lady for a nice meal or watch the footy with the boys although probably not at the same time!
Great venue and a great atmosphere
Always has the best original live music there
And always the best people. If passing through this is a place not to leave un visited!!! The penny theatre Canterbury!!
Great food, friendly staff. Only use at lunchtime but can highly recommend it.
Great atmosphere friendly polite staff. Very accommodating we took my Dad who has dementia and is also in a wheelchair and the staff could not of been more understanding and helpful
Friendly staff, cheap drinks, good atmosphere. Brilliant pub!
We played here last year and absolutely loved it! We are back there again tomorrow, Friday 2nd February 2018 so if you fancy a bit of Led Zep, come down! Check us out on the interweb, we are CODA - a Tribute to Led Zeppelin, the UK's most exciting and authentic tribute to Led Zeppelin.
Wow this place brings back so many memories. I was in England studying abroad in 2003 and was attending Canterbury Christ Church University and it was a blast. They had the best drink specials and prices on Tuesdays. The people were also so laid back and drama free. I'd like to come back to England again and visit this place.
Fantastic place located in a gorgeous little college town with beautiful cathedrals, castles and local people.
Cheers!
Cheap prices on a few drinks, reasonable prices on most everything else.
I really enjoy the atmosphere of this place, this is primarily because of the friendly bar staff who make sure I never have to wait long to order my drinks. They have pool tables indoors and the outdoor area is very nice with its own TV screen.
The toilets are excellent as the walls are plastered with old comics so every bog visit is an adventure.
Now known as Scream Bar. Fun all round, if they still do it then i reccommend the sourz towerz. So fun but don't expect to get drunk on it. will show all the sports and also pool tables. Big tables for large parties. Good drink deals and also some great staff. If you are a student then dont forget your yellow card. definately worth the discount!
This used to be alright from what i can remember and yes i remember the sourz towerz and yes they were great.
It is now known as the scream bar but i think i prefered the penny theatre name and also the sign. the sign was pretty cool and pretty freaky. The painting itself was called scream which is why the ended up changing the name i think but then they got rid of the sign? i don't understand that one myself.
Have never eaten here but drunk lots! good beer on tap and friendly bar staff.
Had the bottomless brunch with prosecco. Good VFM as you get food & drink for 2 hours. Done one before in Hard Rock Cafe in London which I thought was slightly better than this one. £25.00 each is reasonable to wine and dine in a city I think. Recommended.
Booked Bottomless Brunch for a Hen Party of 17 people. Vickie was very helpful with the booking beforehand as we had a few non-drinkers and these guests were able to order from the main menu no problems. I emailed our pre-order beforehand which was not a requirement but definitely recommend doing for a bigger booking. Honestly, the BEST bottomless brunch I have ever been to. We all upgraded to the extra drinks option which was so worth it. Ellie was superb , came to the table taking a drinks order every 15-20 minutes!! 2 bottles of prosecco and flutes also served with our mains which was an included bonus! Such good value for money and everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
The only negative - unfortunately one main meal was missed and only came out when other people's plates were being cleared away, the cost of this was taken off the bill after requesting this though.
REMEMBER cash for a tip!!
Went for bottomless brunch today. What can I say, we were made to feel very welcome, the lovely young lady who served us was very attentive and made sure our glasses were never empty. We were asked about any allergies before we ordered and both chose the Melt burger with fries, it was really good and far better than we expected having read some of the reviews on here before we went. I would definitely recommend the brunch and am already planning to visit again very soon. The venue has a lovely vibe and was spotless. I couldn't fault it at all, extremely good value for money. Thank you for having us 😀
Had a great lunch with a friend. We had the bottomless brunch wings. The wings were excellent with a lovely variety of sauces. We weren’t drinking alcohol but had a great choice of hot drinks and fruit juices etc. The service was outstanding and we were really well looked after. The two ladies working were so attentive and friendly. The only downside to the whole thing is that we were unable to leave a tip via a card payment which was shame because they really deserved it. No doubt we’ll be back another day. Thanks.
Hidden away in the back streets of Canterbury is this little gem. It's mainly a sports bar but spread over a large area of interconnected areas, which is great if you want to be in a large noisy area or just a small area for friends.... Good food and great friendly staff.... well worth a visit...
Great food and great prices. Addicted to Lilley's mango cider. Only thing that lets it down unfortunately is the fairly grumpy staff on every occasion we've been.
Greeted kindly at the door by Louis, Danni and Nate, served super quick,
4 lovely breakfasts - thank you kitchen team. No complaints at all.
Perfect cold and refreshing Mango cider on tap on a beautiful hot day!
Atmosphere, food, service, drinks, experience
Tick, tick, tick, tick and tick
Thank you
Live music was fun. They play all sorts of live sports there - F1/formula 1, football, racing, swimming, rugby, cricket, diving, water polo - anything, they’ll put it on. Some booths have individual smaller tvs too, so good. Good selection of drinks and friendly staff.
Had the bottomless brunch. With the two hours of free drink. The food was very limited unless you paid an extra £5.
The food was not a large portion nor brilliant quality. If you want to drink as much as you can in 2 hours its the place.
Non alcoholic choice of drinks limited as some people have to drive!
Absolutely loved the place, delicious food and drinks, quick service and feeling like you’re in LA!
We didn’t get live music somehow but it was still worth the trip
We came here Friday night to watch a David Bowie tribute band . The pub was very busy with people there for the music or football. Took ages to be served our drinks in dirty glasses. But overall a nice venue.
Had a great night at the Penny, Nate’s service was immaculate and couldn’t recommend this place any more
Top quality beer and staff 10/10
2nd time having the bottomless brunch. The staff are great and keeping you topped up and the food is tasty too
Visit here frequently, always have a great time. Staff are lovely and polite, food is delicious too would highly recommend!
Just watching a PL match this morning from our home in Oregon, US. It took us back to our introduction to The Penny Theatre and many evenings having delicious meals, great beer and cider, and learning about PL football. We lived on Northgate for two months in early 2016 - our first extended visit to the UK. We trudged into The Penny Theatre after a 20-hour day of travel. The pub was 50 yards from our flat and the first place we found. We were exhausted, very hungry and a bit grumpy, so we weren't going to be picky. What a surprise! Our server was friendly, helpful and very forgiving of our initial crankiness. In short order we were warm, enjoying a delicious meal and feeling the love of Penny Theatre. It quickly became our neighborhood pub where we were welcomed by name and always enjoyed the food, beverage options and friendly atmosphere. Looking forward to returning to our pub home next time we're in town.
Lovely place, great atmosphere especially on weekends, love their student nights too with cheap drinks!
