Our favourite local pub..always a warm welcome & nothing is too much trouble. The food is phenomenal with a great choice of dishes to choose from, not to mention the amazing Sunday carvery and burger & steak nights! Highly recommend!
Stop on way home to Bristol lovely hidden gem of a pub with great food and will make the effort to go again
My family and me went in for carvery today and had an excellent time! The pub is a nice country pub, The meat was excellent and the staff were very warming and welcoming. My partner decided to have a 1/2 burger instead of carvery and said it was the best he had ever had as did my sisters partner. They were excellent with the kids and really enjoyed the whole experience. I look forward to coming back and trying more of the menu.
Excellent food and service. Service was prompt and friendly. Food was all home cooking. Could thoroughly recommend it. Also the atmosphere was very good
First visit to this pub, after it was recommended by a friend. Must say was so welcoming and friendly. Staff so knowledgeable around the lagers and beers. And even multi lingual!!!!! Don’t know her name but (she has blue hair and glasses) (sorry) her customer service is phenomenal and she knows what a snowball is!!! Well done in your choice of staff. Will most definitely return
Absolutely loved it here......We were made more than welcome has too was our dog Topaz .........We totally fell in love with Harvey the labrador!!!!!!
The food was stunning and the staff are awesome. ......definitely 100% recommend the Malt Shovel x
Popped in on the off chance my family and I could grab a carvery . We were not disappointed !! We go often to this lovely local pub and have never been disappointed with food or service . Thanks to all
We had a really lovely night away. The room was spotless and had everything we needed in it.
The pub itself was cosy with the open fire going, had really friendly staff and the food was delicious and reasonably priced! Defiantly worth a visit, we plan to return in the summer.
Lovely meal and great atmosphere. Would recommend to anyone
We had a lovely lunchtime meal at the Malt Shovel. The staff were really friendly and welcoming and service and food quality excellent.
It’s off the beaten track down Blackmore Lane.
We will definitely be back thank you.
Country pub in a lovely area. Food is excellent and a decent selection of real ales (if that's your thing - I like real ale, so all good for me). I had beer battered fish and chips, sat on the external terrace, on a warm evening in May...lovely, and certainly recommended
3 of us stopped here for food. The quality of food was very good and the best chips I have ever had. Service was great and couldn't fault it.
Fantastic menu fabulous food. Always helpful staff really nice decor. Proper country pub with low beams and open fires. Quiet and warm. Like grandmas front room.
We were a table of 16 on a stag do, ate slightly after lunchtime, the staff couldn't have been more accommodating, they organised pre-ordering all the food which was delicious and then kept us well topped up with drinks whilst we were there. Thank you to the Malt Shovel staff on duty on 22/04, you were fantastic!
Attended a wake for an old friend here, good food and a lovely garden. Would go back if it wasn't 150 miles away!

Brilliant gaff and staff were friendly, and the food was amazing.
Top marks
Slightly hidden off the main A39 road towards Bridgwater but sign posted. In my opinion well worth the slight detour. Plenty of parking and seating, both inside and outside. Dogs welcome. As we walked in the door we were greeted with a smile and a warm welcome. Given a menu plus clear directions to the 'specials: board. The meat was locally sourced and seasonal vegetables. The flavour and presentation of my meal was amazing. I will definitely be returning, next time to try the Sunday Lunch and hopefully will have room next time to sample one of the deserts which also looked amazing. I feel the owners of the Malt Shovel should be very proud of their staff especially the chef who, quite obviously takes great care and pride in the preparation and presentation of his meals.
Good conditioned beer, selection of Cheddar ales and Quantock plus guest beer. Recommended nice location friendly staff and locals
Looks like the pub is closed recently October 2023?
Fantastic lunch is classy country pub. Well kept beer, good menu and incredibly friendly staff. We were 4 adults and three young boys. All catered for fabulously. Highly recommended.
Absolutely fantastic local hidden gem!
Visited here on the 18th October with my husband and our little dog Tilly who says thank you for her doggy treats.
The staff were lovely and the food was fantastic. The steak and ale pie was home made and the chips were to die for. Great portion size and value for money. My husband has the duck which was beautifully presented and delicious. Tucked away but what a find!
A great little cosy pub, dog friendly and we were both very happy to enjoy our 1 year wedding anniversary dinner here!
Will defiantly return xx
Nice, well cooked food, good selection of beers.
My brother and I stopped here on our way to view properties for sale.
What a charming pub/restaurant to eat at. Such a warm welcome from the owners and they were happy to give us information on the area for places of interest.
The food was superb, sirloin steak perfection and lemon posset dessert was wow, delicious. If we are in the area again would definitely revisit.
Lovely country pub. Stayed 2 nights. Room clean and quite. Had meal first and second night. Very reasonable price. First night steak 🥩 was cooked how I asked. Second night hubby had lemon sole and again great meal. Only downside was paid £10 for breakfast. First morning no issues. I had egg royal. Was One muffin 2 eggs etc. Hubby had full English. Second morning I had same but only got half muffin 1 egg. Not value for money. But on up side my daughter and son came on second day and asked if they could have some toast and this was done with no problem. Very great full. Would stay again if in area. Just need to be consistent with breakfast or reduce price
Thank you to the staff nothing was a problem. Good luck to you all.
Been here a couple of times for dinner. Excellent service and food top quality pub grub. Cosy, country pub with woodburner. Will definitely return again and again.
Had lunch today, great beer. great food and great service.
Stumbled across this pub for a drink after a walk with a friend, what a lovely pub. Staff are super friendly and welcoming, it's clean and tidy and the Sunday roast looked incredible. We ended up having a dessert (sticky toffee pudding) after seeing how good the food looked and it tasted amazing. Will definitely be using the Malt Shovel as an end point for future walks around the Quantocks. Also dog friendly.
