The food is excellent, the portions are generous (for Cambridge prices),
the selection of vodkas is unparalleled and the hosts are very
friendly. I was dining with a Polish friend (who incidentally is
addicted to Polonia and can't stay away) which may have made them
friendlier than usual but I get the impression they're just friendly
people.
It sounds like bluejade picked the wrong dishes for her meal. I've been to Poland several times, and the pierogi in this place (savoury, for a starter or main course, not the dessert stuff, which I haven't tried) beats stuff that's been handmade by babcias. The main courses we tried we shared three, one of which was goulash with potato pancakes, the others I can't remember the name of were all delicious, in a home-cooked style. We were contentedly full after that, hence no dessert.
If you have signed on for traditional Polish food (or Slovenian, Austrian, Hungarian) you should know what to expect: hearty, rich and filling, but not haute cuisine. That said, pierogi is the king of dumplings and I could eat it all day it's like ravioli, and takes a real labour of love to get right. These guys do that.
Polonia is the real deal, it's as authentic as they come. As long as you like tasty, hearty, home-cooked food, you won't be disappointed!
Great find in a seemingly unlikely location. We had the mushroom and cabbage pierogi, beet and cream soup, pork and sauerkraut with bulgar wheat and a salad mix. All were well-prepared and very reasonably priced (about £25 total). I'd especially recommend the beet soup. They were also very accommodating of our young child and we saw another family there with a toddler. The only miss of the evening was the almond cake, which was a little dry and bland for my taste. Highly recommend!
Really great, friendly staff, good prices, nice filling food, and a great selection of vodka and cocktails.
Step into Old-World boho charm when you cross Polonia's conserved Victorian threshold on gorgeous Chesterton Road.
Our lone hostess managed the floor and bar effortlessly - when asked what 'buckwheat pierogi' and 'bison grass vodka' were, she explained all so thoroughly, we ordered immediately and were almost tempted to order seconds!
The food arrived promptly and didn't disappoint. The buckwheat pierogi were obviously made that day, bursting with earthiness, although, it's an acquired taste. I'd recommend ordering a side serve of sour cream.
Mains were delicious. I had Polish goulash on savoury pancake and J had chicken breast stuffed with butter rolled in breadcrumbs...mmm. In case you're thinking about the diet...generous side salads are about £1.50, so go for it!
A dazzling (read: over-dazzling) array of Polish vodkas await those in need of a digestif (nearly all).
Polonia is just what Cambridge needs in an ever increasing Chain Store/High Street whitewash.
Fantastic. A place to meet friends, where you can talk, eat well, have all kinds of different dishes, share them, get bits for small children, have alcohol if you want it, or snacks, or full meals. I really love this place.
Absolutely delicious food. I was excited to try Polish restaurant and food taste just like at home (I'm originally from Poland)
Such a wonderful polish restaurant. The cuisine is authentic and the menu is very extensive. The owner kindly accommodated us for dinner despite not having a reservation. The meal was served piping hot and was very tasty. The portions are generous and the restaurant is reasonably priced. The ambience and Decor is homely. The restaurant is very clean. It is intimate and there is no music playing constantly in the background which makes the restaurant even more enjoyable. I am grateful for such a lovely evening here. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone. It is family friendly.
Great place to go for a diner. Food was delicious and plenty of. Staff was very friendly. Gig range of craft beer available. Will visit again.
Pros
It was a good experience to visit the Polonia club to have traditional Polish food with our friends. We had lots of main courses. First of all, it was cabbage rolls it was very delicious thin we had mashed potato with fried chicken and cheese with cranberry sauce it was tasty. The ingredients were fresh and the atmosphere was wonderful.
Cons
We didn’t like the fish (herring) and the space was a little cramped.
Overall opinion
We like this experience and we plan to go again.
Living in the other side of Cambridge, I never know there's such a nice polish restaurant hidden in this tranquil neighborhood. It is genuinely a happy surprise for me and my first encounter with polish cuisine was merely perfect.
The ambience is very homy, sweet and soothing. The staff are very helpful, making pertinent introduction and recommendation. In terms of food choice, the dumplings medley is a must try, surprisingly similar to Chinese style dumplings. Cabbage rolls, fried pork steak and other traditional polish dishes are also very tasty.
Come along and have a try. It's definitely worth a detour.
I never tried Polish cuisine and this was the first time. We LOVED the food so much.
Starter: Sledzie W Smietanie(herriings in creamy sauce) and Kielbasa Z Rusztu(grilled Polish sausage)
Main: Pierogi Z Lososiem I Szpinakiem(salmon and spinach pierogi) and Pierogi Z Miesem ( meat stuffed pierogi)
Dessert: warm apple pie and Polish chocolate cake
And their popular lagger
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
We will go there again soon
What a meal! Had Potatoe Cakes topped with Beef Goulash. Delicious tender beef in a delightfully flavorful sauce. Service was great. Also had Popular Polish Lager that wasn't to bad.
Not cheap but not too expensive, and absolutely delicious, every single dish. I tried two times before to dinne there, but they were always fully booked (it is a small place). I recommend to call the before and book a table. Fortunately I could pop in for a Sunday lunch. The lamb was not ready, so I ordered chicken instead, and it was marvelous.
I know now why it is well rated.
And if you go by bike, I was able to leave it perfectly safe just next to the entrance where they have few allocated spaces.
Brilliant! Awesome food, great environment, seamless service and very friendly staff. An absolute gem! All together made my 30th birthday very special! So much better than visiting any chain restaurant. I would highly recommend it to anyone fancying a break from the norm.
Most of my family who came had never been to a Polish Restaurant and/or never tried traditional food. They were all excited to try something new and collectively enjoyed everything we ate and drank.
Thank you so much for a great evening!
Fantastic reasonably priced food in a cosy setting, with faultless service. Will definitely visit again.
