Love love love the bar/pub. They bartenders are great. They have extensive knowledge and a very interesting drink menu which they live to discuss with you and find out what you like. The breakfast is fantastic, many choices and they've been spot on every time. Dinner is really really good. We've had dinner twice and each time it gets better. The staff is the best part of Rhe Northgate, young, young in spirit and love to talk to you, discuss bar menus, dinner menus, other options for dining; they're The Northgate! Our room is very nice, there are no plugs in the bathroom for using the blow dryer, etc., no mirrors in the bedroom for makeup use, you know things women need! We would highly recommend this place to everyone. Love the staff.
Always a great place to be either for a special treat of an overnight stay or an informal business meeting. The staff are polite and helpful, the food is excellent and the rooms are superb.
However the star of the Northgate is Genevieve. She makes you feel so welcome and taken care of no matter how long you stay, which really does add warmth to the hotel.

Went for a birthday cocktail with the family, best decision I made on my birthday! Staff lovely, advice given when making a selection, cocktail perfect in appearance and taste...would recommend to anyone who appreciates a fine cocktail in lovely surroundings served by lovely staff 🍹
I would highly recommend taking a trip to The Northgate - they do THE best cocktails of anywhere I have been. So creative and beautifully made, they're more like works of art! We had my partners 30th birthday there recently and they really went above and beyond to accommodate us and made the occasion a very special one. A special thanks to Ashley and his team at the bar who are always so welcoming and friendly, it's easy to see why the place is so popular. This place deserves every praise it gets, great ambience, great staff, the BEST cocktails, a real gem in Bury St Edmunds.

had our valentines meal here last night was a taster menu and wow! we sat at the chefs table so watched everything being cooked and dished up such a good idea! the food was amazing cocktails amazing and staff amazing will defiantly be going back! thank for an amazing evening

Stayed at this fabulous hotel last night and absolutely loved it. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Room was lovely. Cocktails were great and breakfast was yummy. Very busy little place in a fab location.
The food was absolutely outstanding. Six of us in our party, all had different meals - all of them, all three courses were fantastic. What a great chef they must have!
Somewhat of a strange experience. It's less hotel, more Air b&b. It's an unmanned former hotel where you collect keys from an external key box and then let yourself come and go without seeing any staff. Fine for me, but this may not suit everyone.
Excellent location for the centre of town, good sized, well appointed rooms and a reasonable amount of on site free parking.
There's nothing bad that can be said about the Northgate. Rooms are splendid, luxurious, and everything worked as it ought to, and was spotlessly clean. It's a shame the hotel no longer has its restaurant and bar and staff and reception and all the things that gave the place its terrific reputation in Bury St Edmunds, but alas they are gone. The hotel itself may soon disappear. It is for sale, and the very friendly cleaning lady told us that most of the potential buyers want to convert it to residential. That would be a shame, so stay there whilst you can!

I happened to chance upon the cocktail bar at The Northgate after this was recommended to me. The hotel is built in a Victorian house and you notice how lovely it looks inside as soon as you enter. I did not get an opportunity to stay in the rooms there or have dinner there though, but I did notice how well designed and decorated it looked as I walked in.
At the bar, I was greeted by a lovely gentleman, who I’ve been told is David, the General Manager of the hotel. David asked me what my preferred choice of cocktail would be and when I mentioned a Sidecar, he instantly agreed to it with great enthusiasm and graciously made me a Sidecar which wasn’t even on the cocktail menu. And oh my, was it delicious! I was left so impressed by the fact that he’d agreed to make a drink which there was no need for him to agree to, or no expectation to even know of, but therein lies the skill of a mixologist, in my opinion. He offered a few other choices as well, but I wound up ordering the same again based on just how good it was. Thank you David, and well done, Northgate, you’ve got a keeper!
Needless to say, I was left a happy and content man by the end of the night. 😊
Just wow! Stopped for a random lunch on a Sunday afternoon and I can't get over how amazing the food was!!! We had a beef roast, halloumi, fish and a chickpea salad dish. Presentation was super but above all, tasting amazing!!! Surroundings were so beautiful and service was fantastic. Thank you for a great experience, next time I'm in Cambridge, will definitely be visiting again!!
Beautiful meal had by the 4 of us. I had the beef cheek it was just stunning. Really good coffee too. The only criticism I would have is whilst the staff are all lovely and friendly they are not very 'attentive'. Don't do service checks, / ask if you need anything else / offer more drinks or check your drinks are coming when they can see you've been waiting. If they can nail that then 5 stars. I'd def recommend a visit and will go back.
I booked a beautiful private dining room for a small wedding reception at The Northgate. The room was stunning (as was the rest of the restaurant). The food was sublime! Every single dish was delicious and all of our guests were extremely pleased. The service was fantastic from start to finish. Chris was very accommodating from the initial book process and so helpful - made my life very easy. My husband and I will be coming back here each year and would recommend this place to ANYONE!
It's too bad the restaurant is closing, the food and service were absolutely amazing. The mains of duck breast and mushroom risotto were cooked to perfection. Hope to see the food come back round soon. I understand the hotel and breakfast part will remain open.
The food was lovely, I had the plaice 2 ways and was very happy with the egg Custard tart! Interior was very nice and the temperature of the room was comfortable. The service was pretty good, and the only thing I would say is the toilets need some attention, but it wouldn't stop me from going back again!

Friendly staff, lovely setting and outstanding food. Visited The Northgate purely for dining rather than staying at the hotel and would highly recommend it in this regard.
The whole experience is well crafted from the friendly greeting through to the final goodbye. A wide selection of quality drinks and cocktails are available on the bar and the staff are knowledgeable and helpful.
The menu offers top locally sourced and seasonal food, cooked to perfection and presented beautifully. Again the serving staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful which goes a long way towards providing an excellent evening.
If you haven't eaten here yet it is well worth a visit.
Just had an fantastic 2 night stay. The staff were brilliant - very friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. The rooms and food were both excellent. Breakfast outside on the patio with friends and family was a real highlight.
Great hotel. Great location as really close to town centre. There is plenty of parking on site. Very good breakfast with high-quality food and plenty of it. Comfy bed and great shower. Friendly staff.
Wow what an amazing little hotel. We stayed for my sons wedding weekend and we were all so very well.looked after. All the staff were amazing and the rooms were very nice. The staff could not have been more helpful and worked so well as a team.

We stayed here for a night and dined at the Chef's Table which was a great experience. Food was amazing and we had the nicest room I've stayed in so far at the Chestnut properties. Cocktails were really good as well.

An amazing experience - all of the team were very welcoming and professional, the drinks and food were extremely tasty and well presented. We sat on the tables overlooking the open kitchen which makes it a lot of fun to see how everything is prepared and to interact with the chefd. Definitely worth a visit!
Everything about our experience here was superb. The approach to food and drinks is really interesting, this is not your standard meal, the flavours and blends were easily the best I've tried in this town. The invention continues with the wine and especially the cocktails, which were an experience of their own. The service and decor spot on, we could find nothing to fault at all, and look forward to returning as soon as possible. It's not cheap, but it is excellent value for what you get.
