We came after a walk on the off-chance of a lunchtime meal but unfortunately they weren't serving food, having been busy with their beer festival in recent days. The staff were very friendly though, and we would certainly visit again. It seemed it would be a nice atmosphere. At least 7 other people were disappointed too, while we were there having a drink.

Last week we had the pleasure of visiting the Sir Walter Raleigh Pub in East Budleigh - a massive thank you to the whole team for a lovely evening. The Sir Walter Raleigh is a community pub, it's been here in one way or another since the 14th Century - it has been the beating heart of the community for many years. Recently it became the home of award-winning Head Chef Dan Kavanagh who is elevating the food to a new level with a seasonal menu using the amazing produce nearby. With the trend in pubs closing, it was heartening to see a one with such love and support. Our menu looked like this: Tori Beetroot Carpaccio (£8.00) 10oz Pork Chop 🥩(£16.95) Chocolate Brownie (£8.95) Me Cured Salmon (£7.50) Steamed Plaice (£19) Passion Fruit and Pineapple Sundae (£8.50) Our starters: Dan really took the essence of summer with this light and fresh starter. The salmon was delicately cured, balanced with the beetroot, salad leaves and lime yoghurt - it played with the sharpness of the lime and the smoothness of the fish and was light on the palette and sincerely enjoyable. Tori chose the Beetroot Carpaccio, which was a creative dish which crafted a varied range of flavours together. The use of Devon blue cheese worked really well with the other ingredients. For mains it was Steamed Plaice with a summer salsa, courgettes and Jersey new potatoes. This really was fresh, well cooked fish with a buttery summery salad with fresh beans and peas, combined with a good sprinkle of sea salt on the potatoes and garnished with samphire. It was a fitting tribute to the beautiful produce Devon is known for; those tastes resonated through the dish. My wife had to go for the 10oz Pork Chop - a sumptuous, skilfully cooked piece of tender meat, matched with creamy mashed potato, roasted onions and a peppercorn sauce. Dan has created a thoughtful, seasonal menu which effortlessly celebrates the provenance of the ingredients that goes into each dish. It covers scope and taste and caters to a wide range of palettes. It is thoroughly worth a visit. The pub benefits the community and by visiting you are supporting it as well. Reservations are recommended. I will see you again soon Walter.

Myself and three others came for dinner on 16/06/23. We all had the most wonderful time. My main was the catch of the day. It was incredible, one of the best meals I've had in a long time and my aunt thoroughly enjoyed hers too. My partner and uncle both had the pork. Again, an absolutely stunning meal. The staff were amazing. Faultless service and made us feel so welcome. We can't wait to return to your beautiful pub!

The Inn is located in a small village so parking could be difficult. A short distance away there is that rare thing a free car park. However, it is small. The service in the community run Inn was excellent as was the food. The tables are quite closely grouped and the Inn did become a little warm. We would certainly eat there again. Do remember to book. The website was not responsive so it is best to telephone

What a perfect find halfway around our walk. We hadn't booked a table, yet they quickly settled us in and provided us with some delicious menu choices for a lunchtime bite. Well done to all involved in this community project.

I visited on Sunday evening at the end of their beer festival, 7 of the 20 beers on the festival stillage had sold out, there were another 4 on the bar. The beers were mostly from Devon, plus 3 from Exmoor Brewery, Somerset, & 2 from Palmer's Brewery, Dorset. I like dark beers, so after trying a couple of lighter beers, I had a half pint each of Exeter: Darkness & Exmoor: Beast, lovely. 🍻😋 This is a great pub which I must admit that I haven't been to for a couple of years, probably pre pandemic. I hope that I can visit again in the not too distant future, although it is about a 30 mile round trip. 🤔

We visited Sir Walter Raleigh on Thursday lunch time after a very pleasant walk from Budleigh. There was a light luncheon menu on offer as the new chef had only been there 2 days. However, there was one Mains dish available which I ordered. I got served with 2 perfectly cooked pork chops in a creamy green peppercorn sauce, perfect mashed potato, tender stemmed broccoli & char grilled shallots. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal & very much look forward to our next visit.
