Bude, as usual, was heaving with tourists and all the overpriced coffee shops were filling up. But walk just round the corner from the town centre and there is the Bencoolen inn, unaccountably virtually empty. Plenty of tables outside in the sunshine but we opted to sit inside in the cool. The food was excellent, there was a very good pint of proper job and it was all reasonably priced. The friendly guy behind the bar even put the rest of our daughters (massive) pizza in a takeaway box for her. Excellent pub, we'll be back.

Bencoolen Inn is a unique establishment located in the heart of the town of Bude, Cornwall. Contrary to what the name suggests, this place is not an inn or a hotel, but rather a cozy pub that offers a wide range of alcoholic beverages and light bites. As someone who is not particularly fond of alcohol, I visited this pub purely for its historical significance. I was intrigued by the fact that the pub's name is derived from the colonial name of my hometown, Bengkulu, in Sumatra, Indonesia, which was known as Bencoolen during the 18th century when it was under British rule. The atmosphere inside Bencoolen Inn is warm and inviting, with traditional decor and comfortable seating. The pub's friendly staff members are knowledgeable about the drinks and food on offer, and they are happy to make recommendations based on your preferences. I ordered a non-alcoholic cocktail and a plate of chips, and I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty they were. The pub also offers a selection of locally brewed beers and ciders, which I'm sure would appeal to beer enthusiasts. Overall, I found Bencoolen Inn to be a delightful place to visit, even if you are not a big drinker. The pub's historical significance and cozy ambiance make it a must-visit spot in Bude, and the staff's excellent service only adds to its appeal. If you are in the area and looking for a laid-back place to enjoy a drink or a snack, I highly recommend checking out Bencoolen Inn. As a person who loves to explore historical places, Bencoolen Inn in Bude, Cornwall is a gem that I discovered recently. Despite its name, it is not an inn, but rather a charming pub that is steeped in history. What drew me to this pub was its connection to my hometown of Bengkulu, in Sumatra, Indonesia. The pub's name is derived from the colonial name of my hometown, which was known as Bencoolen during the 18th century when it was under British rule. Upon entering Bencoolen Inn, I was impressed by the cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The pub's decor is reminiscent of traditional English pubs, with wooden furnishings and soft lighting. The staff members were friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the pub, which added to the overall experience. I ordered a cup of tea and a slice of cake, and I was pleased with the quality of both. The pub also offers a wide selection of beers and wines, which I'm sure would appeal to those who enjoy alcoholic beverages. In conclusion, Bencoolen Inn is a delightful pub that offers a unique experience for visitors. Its historical significance and charming ambiance make it a must-visit spot in Bude, whether you are a local or a tourist. I highly recommend stopping by for a drink or a bite to eat, and taking in the rich history of this establishment.

A pleasant surprise was finding this pub to eat in. I highly recommend the Sunday Roast, which brought us back for a Tuesday Evening meal. The next dish we had was Mexican Chicken. It was perfectly cooked chicken, with so much flavour. I'm sure you won't complain at the portion sizes.

We have eaten in this place quite a few times now and always try to have a meal here at least twice during our stays, always excellent tasty well cooked food at reasonable prices, the staff are friendly and helpful it's a pleasure to eat here and will be a sad day when the owner who is also the chef decides to retire. Highly recommended.

Spent a afternoon/evening here on a Saturday. Overall great experience. The furniture and decor is a bit dated but adds to the character of the building. The only issue I had was the price for food. Slightly overpriced for what you got, and not a great portion. Good selection of drinks and very friendly staff. Would visit again.

The staff were so friendly & helpful & made us feel very welcome. Already had a big party of people in when we arrived but this didn't delay our order in the least. Really appreciated this with a two year old. Good traditional food & no complaints at all.
