Had a absolutely delicious lunch at The Bull recently. All the charm of the old pub has been retained (Ive been coming to the pub on and off for 20 years) while the food and booze standards have definitely gone up. The food is exactly what modern pub food should be, simple, uncomplicated, high quality and seasonal. Can't wait to go back.
We ate there yesterday evening. The food was fantastic and the wine - a Rioja - really amazing. Free sparkling water is a nice touch too.
Friendly atmosphere at the bar, a good balance of people popping in for a few drinks and diners.
Lovely atmosphere managed to keep the charm and great friendly service with fine food to add !!
Sunday lunch was just delicious. Clean plates all round. Good sized portions, and great kids food (good quality and tasty!) I recommend the pheasant - awesome red cabbage, rich, tangy and jammy! Yum.
The confit pork is AMAZING! Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere. Will definitely be returning :)
Have never had a bad meal here, service is fantastic and food is always delicious!!
Best Pub in the area !fantastic food with warm and friendly atmosphere ,highly recommend
Fantastic Sunday lunch here yesterday, everything perfectly cooked and tasty. Very friendly staff and excellent service. Will definitely return when we are next in the area. Yum!
Brilliant food & lovely atmosphere, perfect after a long walk around Alfred’s tower !
Really good food, given a table for 7 with no reservation. Great service too x
Beautiful pub with excellent food. Always a warm welcome from Ann and Martin which makes the pub what it is.
Lovely food. Lovely people. Beautiful pub. Look forward to our next visit.
Perfect example of a country pub. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Food was incredible at a very reasonable price. Lovely interesting beer garden with plenty of seating. Toilets spotless. Highly recommended!
Old fashioned, cosy and full of character. Aways a great stop with the dogs after a long walk.
Landlady is very welcoming, and food is delicious - both Sunday roast and midweek.
Fantastico !!
First class Ale, along with a top notch Sunday Lunch, All served up in Beautiful period surroundings. The staff make up a splendid orchestra, led by the maestro conductor himself ! (pictured below.) Bravo!!
There seem to be mixed reviews about this place on TripAdvisor etc. which in the main seem to depend on whether the reviewer had frequented it prior to an ownership change. We haven't been before but went for a Sunday roast after a walk at Alfred's Tower. Lovely pub with good ambiance and we found the staff great - warm, welcoming and helpful. The roasts were OK, not very hot when served and the greens were slightly bland but the meat was nice and the veg not overcooked which is always welcome! We had desserts as well which were nice and felt that overall price was reasonable although slightly on the high side for the quality. Overall though, we would go back as the staff made it a nice place to relax for lunch after a good weekend walk and the food was reasonable enough not to put us off although bit of room for improvement.
We really enjoy this country pub. They have a fab roaring fire, great for wet and cold winter days, very welcoming. The food is good too. The staff are friendly and attentive and they serve a great local bitter "Batcombe".
Fantastic Pub!
We came over for lunch on Wednesday as we had heard it was newly reopened under new management. We came back for dinner on Friday as we enjoyed it so much!
Really lovely atmosphere, dark wooden beams, cosy fireplace. Everything you could want and more.
Staff were attentive and friendly. Good choice of beer. The food was delicious, particular favourite was the chocolate mousse for dessert. Wine list seemed very well picked and extensive choice - I will have to try some when I’m not driving!
Owned by the same people as the Rothbar & Grill but a very different feel and atmosphere, a really outstanding English Pub!
Also, Mitch, the new landlord is brilliant and makes the place really come alive.
We look forward to returning again and again.
Turned up without a reservation for Sunday lunch, didn't seem a problem as we were seated right away. The menu is presented on a chalk board behind the bar so you are expected to decide your choice at the same time as ordering the drinks not really a great idea. However the roast beef and roast lamb were cooked to our liking and served with fresh vegetables and plenty of them but at £12 each probably not the cheapest Sunday lunch for what is a country pub. The surroundings are as stated a traditional country pub with a restaurant attached which is a modern extention.
By and large we enjoyed our experience.
Delightful detour! We didn’t intend to eat here but so glad we did. Pleasant, welcoming hubbub, top quality food and friendly attentive service. Beautiful garden with games etc. We will be planning our return 😁🌈💃🏻 and I’m a difficult one to please !
If you're on your way to Alfred's Tower be sure to visit the absolute gem of a country pub on your way.......and maybe again on your way back. The food is delicious, the staff are lovely and the ambiance is warm, friendly and inviting.
Hmmmmm...... I'm not sure I should be letting you in on this secret as I might not get a table when I next visit! Thank you to all at the Bull for a great dining experience.
One of the best pubs we have been to - family friendly, dog friendly, fabulous, imaginative and unfussy food served in good time, with a great atmosphere - we felt welcomed from the minute we walked through the door. What more could you ask for, thanks, Mitch!
