This is the second time we visited Kitgum, and it‘s quickly becoming our favourite place for dinner. We received a really warm welcome, and although the restaurant was fully booked, the atmosphere was lovely and chilled.
The food is outstanding and flavoursome and a little different from Brighton’s usual offerings. We would recommend the set menu, which is great value for money.
Fayaz was absolutely lovely. He was so Jolly, chatted to us and made the experience 10/10. The food was delicious as well. We got the set menu of 2 of first plates and 1 of second plates each with a few sides and a pudding. It was perfect. Will be returning!!
We tried the set menu, which comes with two starters and one main per person. The food was incredible, beautifully flavoured, and comes out slowly, so you can really soak up the lovely atmosphere. The owner is really kind and loves to talk to customers- he really makes you feel welcome and taken care of. We also tried the dessert, which was a donut with kulfi/mango sorbet. It was a delicious way to round off a great experience.
Visited in May 2022. Came with some friends and that's probably the best idea as you can try most of the dishes on the menu.
Everything was tasty and we ended up quite full.
Portions could be a bit bigger but they are definitely not small.
Can't remember how much we paid but it felt a good value for money.
I wouldn't go again before trying another place but I would definitely recommend people to go and try it.
You might need an adventurous pallet for some of the dishes as it is not strictly speaking a traditional cuisine.
Outstanding! Hands down some of the most delicious food I have ever eaten. Each dish was meticulously prepared and presented like a work of art. The service was excellent. The staff are so friendly and helpful. A must eat if you're ever in Brighton. I can't wait to go again!
Some of the best food I’ve had in such a long time, the flavours were so refreshing and unique! The dishes were cooked to excellence. Everything we had on the menu was delicious and Marta was a wonderful host and cook! Thank you 🙏
Amazing place, I got the Vegan taster menu and it was amazing! everything was so flavoursome and well made with high quality ingredients. The food is just incredible. Beautiful decor, clean and amazing atmosphere. Staff are super helpful and friendly! definitely recommend 👍🏻👍🏻
Incredible African cuisine, never had it before and I can confirm the flavours are insane! It's a great place to share a number of plates with a small group, trust me you'll want to try everything on the menu anyway, so this is perfect! The waitress was also super friendly. 100% recommend all the dishes I had, which were -
Cauliflowers don't have wings - the texture and flavour is something else
Mogo chips
Ringna bateta nu shaak
Grilled masala fish
Lamb kalio
Mandazi Kulfi - donuts for desert
Nice concept, the history behind this restaurant is lovely. Food was delicious, small plates style of food, i personally never know how to order, i always end up with too much or not enough, but that is my personal problem. Service was kind but a bit rush. Been a small restaurant pay a bit the covid-19 situation and restrictions. Hope all the best.
An absolute delight from start to finish! The price for the tasting menu is very fair for the amount of food you get - which is a lot. We were welcomed with a complimentary appetiser of deep fried potatoe with a tomato relish. The lamb balls were incredible, as were the chicken wings. My partner and I shared the okra and the aubergine as our mains which were both great. Finishing with the cardamon donut with saffron ice cream was the cherry on the top of a great meal. The service was lovely and their recommendations were great and the open kitchen that was slightly raised from where we were eating gave a lovely connection to the whole meal. Thank you Kitgum!
Amazing food. Must eat in Brighton!
Friendly and kind staff. Food super tasty! Really don’t miss it! Also, make a booking or be willing to wait!!! Get the mandazi and kulfi for dessert! It’s stunning.
And for mains get the kahai chicken, the white fish, and the okra! They were great great great. Amazing quality and flavours.
Incredible
Can’t recommend this place enough! HYPED
We paid £70 for 2 starters, 3 mains, 1 beer (local - very good), and 1 dessert.
We were 3 of us, and shared everything!
So so so so so good.
As someone who enjoys to cook at home, I like to experience food that I wouldn’t/couldn’t easily cook myself. Kitgum is the place to go for this. The food is exciting and different and the small plates meant I got to try out lots of tantalisingly good flavours and the meal was excellent value for money. The atmosphere is chilled and welcoming and the staff attentive but discreet. Well done Kitgum! I understand how difficult it is for small independent restaurants to survive in these difficult economic times and so many hard working restauranteurs have gone to the wall. I for one will continue to support this fantastic little local restaurant and am really looking forward to my next visit!
Hugely impressed: great menu, cooking and staff.
Great fixed priced menu and good value wines.
I'm not usually a fan of small plates but here dishes were delivered in order with all dinners eating together.
Visiting Brighton from the North West due to visiting family. Booked this restaurant online, which was easy. Decided we wanted to try something different and this caught our eye online as we was browsing. 5 star reviews helped on this decision too. Was not disappointed. We loved it. We was greeted with a warm welcome by Kelly our host. She was so nice. She also helped us with what to order. And it was perfect. We ordered 3 starters between 2 then 2 curries which we shared. 1 rice and 1 chapati. Everything was so fresh, and hot. It was an infusion of wonderful flavours. The atmosphere was calming with nice back ground music. Reading the little history on the top of the menu of how the restaurant came about was interesting but also intriguing as we then wanted to know more. Fantastic evening. Thanks so much. Will definitely be back.
Been waiting to try Kitgum for ages and we weren't disappointed! We had the lamb curry, squid, potatoes and samoas 💕. The sauce with the tempura squid was epic, potatoes were lovely and the samoas had just the right amount of spices, only reason it wasn't 5 stars is that the lamb was a bit salty for me, still melt in the mouth meat though! This place is great for both a quick bit and a longer meal with mates.
Had an amazing birthday lunch here today. Lovely staff, amazing food, and a great story behind the restaurant! Will definitely be returning, if northing else, to try the rest of the options on the menu!
My favourite restaurant in Brighton! The staff are always so lovely and the service is fantastic. The food is absolutely delicious with some excellent vegan options, all of which are clearly marked in the menu - including the wines, which is something many other restaurants should take note of! Love it here, highly recommended.
Food is fantastic and fresh. The wine is lovely to. Choices on the menu are tight, but I see that as a good sign. Staff was friendly and helpful in choosing the dishes.
This is a lovely little restaurant which has beautiful different food, which is delicious.
I recommend this restaurant we had the taster menu which offered us a range of their dishes.
The cardamom doughnut 🍩 was amazing.
Just missed a coffee at the end.
