It's been 3 years since I was last through the doors of the black horse. However after today's meal I can't for the life of me think why I have not been there at least twice a week for those 3 years. Apparently when learning Indian cuisine, master chefs will only allow students 1 spice at a time. They will only get another once they have mastered that spice. In Zulu's I believe that must be their ethos as every favour, note, zest and tang is ruthlessly and perfectly balanced. It's not that they are good with the odd dish, everything is nothing short of delicious. I could have eaten a plate of their buttered carrots alone, the parmesan cheese is so rich, it made the roof of my mouth tingle. Inside that kitchen, they aren't cooking, alchemy is happening. Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you lunch at Zulu's, which is pretty close.
Ate here with my friend on Thursday lunch time have to say never had a bad meal here but Thursdays lunch was spot on I never do three courses but did it as it was Christmas couldn’t fault any course but can I just say please put lobster bisque on the menu more often love it xx
The Mcananey family can’t thank Pete , Sarah and their staff enough for the care and attention they gave us today . The food was outstanding , as was the atmosphere. Great pub , warm wonderful people
Six of us visited for Sunday lunch recently and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. We were given a really warm welcome by all of the staff. The roast beef was lovely but the desserts were out of this world. I would highly recommend the bread and butter pudding with Jack Daniels maple syrup and also the sticky toffee pudding. It was a really cold day but we were toasty warm and enjoyed a lovely glass of red wine next to the roaring fire. Can’t wait to go back!
A lovely pub food is excellent lovely atmosphere and dogs are always welcomed we go regular with our dog Izzy an all round lovely pub with lovely staff
Popped in for lunch today with the hubby. Sampled the seasonal menu: curried parsnip soup and Cullen Skink; crab pate and croutons with pickled cucumber; lamb with leek suet pudding, roast carrot and parsnip with mint gravy
All totally delicious! Will have to return soon as spoilt for choice.
Had my sons 18th birthday here with the family , the food as always was spot on and the staff were fab well worth a visit if you havnt been yet 😀
Love the atmosphere of the pub staff are lovely its my favourite place for food and it’s local
Give credit where it's due. Tempted by the "new offer" of 2 courses for £12 or 3 courses for £15. Totally went out the window cos they had my fave all time food, Wood Pigeon. Fabulously presented and well worth it. Thanks Pete n Sarah it was delicious!
I absolutely love Zulus, it's such a unique and quirky place. The staff are always so friendly and the food is out of this world. Four of us went and thoroughly enjoyed every course. When it came to dessert we all wanted to try everything! Perfect dining experience we'll be back next week for restaurant week
had steak and chuncky chip toms and mushrooms lovely cooked steak very happy great photo pete nice bar also lovely bar staff a gem of apub great chef pete thank you all x
Six of us dined here on Friday evening - outstanding once again. A crazy place; folk seem to either love it or hate it. Personally, I LOVE it!
Thanks to owner & chef Pete Zulu and all of his dedicated staff.
My 4 visit everytime the food has been superb. Yesterday's visit was for birthdays. 17 off us and everyone really enjoyed their food. I had my LG with me who is only 2 (next Friday) and I didn't want her to feel left out when we all had starters, thier was a watermelon starter and I asked if she could just have a bowl of watermelon and it was no problem and she's loved it. I love the cosy homely mismatched feel of the place. Staff are always friendly. My only negative is for them not to hover to much waiting for us to finish, but not to much of a problem.
Way above average food for a pub! Why they haven't got a Michelin star yet is beyond me. It's my 5th visit now and it's been superb every time! Bravo Pete. Great job x
First time for food here certainly won’t be the last! absolutely beautiful, staff were great too!
My daughter's and son in law put on a surprise birthday party for me. There was about 36 of us. The food was superb and we were served very promptly. The staff were all lovely and allowed us to have live music which was provided by my cousins Marcus Brown and Georgia Parker Brown with a guest appearance of my Granddaughter Caitlyn Johnson. We had a fab afternoon. Thank you x x
A much needed family blowout tonight with fine food, fine wine, fabulous surroundings and WONDERFUL staff - thanks for putting up with the noise :-)
Met up with friends for lunch. Friendly staff excellent service. The food is always great. Have been several times, never disappointed.
We enjoyed an absolutely delicious Sunday Lunch. The food was well cooked & very well presented. All of the staff were very friendly, helpful & polite. We will certainly return.
We have been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. Amazing food and always great service
Had a fantastic time here this afternoon for Aunties birthday. Best food I've tasted in a restaurant in a long long time. Staff couldn't do enough for you and had the most genuine smiles. Even the locals were the friendliest you could ask for. couldn't get enough of this place. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Thank you Black Horse and see you again soon :) .
Lush food for my birthday treat, friendly staff too
What a fab nite we had watching Georgia and Marcus play on Sunday lovely atmosphere and staff are great too. It's a must to go here peeps
Great food, friendly staff, what more do you need. Oh and the soup wow. Thanks xx
Always a lovely pint of Guinness at the Black Horse, great company, great music
We went for the restaurant week. First course lovely. Second course the burger could have been warmer. Barely warm really. Beware of the 10% surcharge. Apart from that okay meal.
Absolutely beautiful food. Every course was outstanding. Staff were attentive and very polite and ensured all our requests were met. Service was fast and without error.
Came here for the 1st time in restaurant week. The place is interesting and quirky. The staff were all friendly. I only tried 1 type of wine which was very nice. The food was also very good.
A pub with a difference, put your demob suit on and a trilby, get the other half to put on her floral dress and her little hat with the flower on the side, and you'll fit right in. You will see items on display you haven't seen in a long time. They do serve food but parking could be a problem if you arrive at the wrong time, street parking only.
Quirky little place with friendly staff serving behind the bar. Lots of random items scattered around the place to interest you.
We used to go to this pub regularly a lot of years ago & luckily it still hasn’t changed one bit. We had drinks outside in the sunshine & the 2 hand pulled real ales were excellent.
We went inside for our meal & all 3 of us really enjoyed our food. 2 of us had a sweet & both of those were terrific.
A pet hate of mine is restaurants that automatically put a 10% service charge on but on this occasion I couldn’t complain.
Well worth a visit. Amazing food which makes it so hard to pick from the menu as there is so many delicious options to choose from. Dublin bay prawns were delicious & I would order those again. Crab lasagne sounds weird but was delicious.
Will definitely be going back
Went to Zulu within the pub for food, it was really nice food with some unique dishes and the quirky atmosphere of the pub makes it a unique experience. Quite reasonably priced too.
Absolutely loved everything about this place. Quirky and interesting decor inside, a lovely little beer garden. Staff very friendly and attentive. Food fantastic a great menu not to big but a great variety of dishes. 1st time we visited but Can't wait to return in the very near future.

Got here just right time to get a table. Wonderful service thank you. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal.
Me and the family went for lunch today and had the ribeye steak and chips and sticky toffee pudding. The whole meal was beautiful and so tasty plus the staff are very friendly and helpful. We would definitely recommend the black horse and can't wait to go back :)
Lovely ambiance. Very quirky surroundings. Food and staff excellent
Fantastic food great atmosphere friendly staff
Cosy pub/restaurant with friendly, helpful staff and exquisite food! Seating area outside the building and also to the side in a small garden - perfect for the summer days. Disabled access too at the front entrance.
There's loads of "Nick Nacks" on display inside, it's like a magical cobh of history alongside a wall adorned with Pete Zulu's very own photography. Well worth a visit.
Lovely quirky pub with very polite and welcoming staff . Opening times are bit vague on website but other than that fab 👌
Sunday evening, busker night. Was a great atmosphere and really relaxed. Would go again.
Amazing, never disappointed here. Quality is great. Our favourite restaurant in the NE and we eat out a lot. Can be pricey but you get what you pay for. Only wish it was a tiny bit less so we could go weekly!
First class pub in all respects. If you don't like Steely Dan then best to avoid. Chef specialises in triple-cooked chips.
Lovely pub, amazing atmosphere lovely staff... Great food.. but...only a one part pour on the Guinness, sad times!!...but I'm Irish and very fussy about my Guinness.. ..saying that I still highly recommend this place....Will now be my new local now, I Love it!!! X
