Having moved to Birmingham from North West London where I was surrounded by Gujarati restaurants to then move to Birmingham where there pretty much is nothing for Gujji's (my opinion). I was in heaven when I found Jyoti's. Delicious food and amazing prices! A taste of home for me.
Great for veggies. Nice little restaurant and great for vegetarians. Been a couple of times. I enjoy working my way through the great selection of starters. There is a lot of choice, but the pani puris are the best and worth a second visit for them alone. If your vegetarian (or not) and and fancy something different check this place out.
Great Food - Try Something Different. If you fancy something different and authentic, you should really give the Jyoti a try. The first time I tried the food here, I hadn't heard of many of the things on the menu. Luckily, the friend who'd taken me knew their way around the menu, so I tried a bunch of things that were new to me.
You really need to try their Masala Dosa and Pani Puri - they're amazing. Over the years I've taken many friends who've travelled the world - and they say the food is fantastic - better than you find in all but the most expensive places in India.
Take your own booze or buy soft drinks there. Work your way through the menu - I haven't had anything I didn't like - and I'm really fussy!
Great for non veggies. 4 non veggies eat here and really enjoed it. We chose the fixed m enu for 4, and was pleasently surprise by the different taste we were offered. The 3 different staters were excelent followed by 4 diffent cuiies and plently of rice, chapatis etc. Service was very friendly, sweets followed, typical indian i.e very sweet.
Only downsides are we should have ordered another curry (greedy) also with the constant opening of the front door and it's open plan style, it did get cold at times.
Now this was a lucky find , thanks to Zomato , not knowing the city at all and on a short visit with a work colleague , who is a vegetarian and not comfortable eating non Indian foods and with long working hours that left me with no energy or inclination for fine dining , I had stuck to the comfort zone near my hotel in Acock Green and more the quick serve kind of places. Bored of the sameness yesterday I took on to Zomato to venture out of this zone and was pleasantly rewarded for the same.
Located on the main road , in what appeared to be a decent market place , Jyoti's was not difficult to find. A traditional Indian Sweets and Savoury snacks outlet with a decent sitting area / restaurant attached to it , the bright and well lit place is modelled after many such outlets in all Indian towns.
As you enter , you walk by the counter selling the pre prepared sweets , savouries , papadoms and chutneys etc. the smallish sitting area beyond this counter is neatly laid out and informally nice. One look at the menu and I was certain that this was a Gujarati operated place , mostly with a Uganda or some other African country background.
As we sat down , the friendly and efficient server placed a jug of water and fresh glasses on our table , a practice from the old country , not often followed here in UK.
We ordered a portion ( 3 Pcs.) of Kachori ( GBP 1.95/-) and another one of Mogo chips ( GBP 2.95/-) , fried Julian's of the Kasava , vegetable , much favoured by the erstwhile , Ugandan Gujuratis , to start and Sev Tomato ( GBP 5.95/-) , a popular Rajasthani / Gujarati dish made of crisp , spicy fried chickpea flour vermicelli in a tangy tomato sauce and a Mutter Paneer ( GBP 5.95/-) , Peas and Cottage Cheese curry accompanied by 2 Masala Puris ( GBP 0.60/-each ) , spicy deep fried Indian bread and 2 butter smeared Chapatti ( GBP 0.60/- each ) , the flat girdle cooked Indian bread.
The Kachories , served piping hot , promptly , deep fried , Chickpea flour , doughnuts , stuffed with a tang lentil mash , accompanied by 2 chutneys , a green tangy one and a red jaggery based sweet one were totally delicious . The Mogo chips took some time in arriving , served in seasoned , with salt and red chillies in the side for us to season them to our taste , hit the spot instantly , with their unique taste and texture .
Both the mains were truly delicious , not greasy but very light and fresh tasting. We ended up ordering 2 each of masala puris and chappaties to go through the utterly delightful preparations. Here I must also mention that our diner was accompanied by a side of fresh sliced onions and some slices of lemon , on the house , again a practise popular in India.
Even after being totally full I could not resist but order a Gulab Jamun , hot , delicious , sweet ,sticky goodness in a deep fried and sugar dipped ball of goodness. Divine.
Am certainly going back and highly recommend the place to anyone looking for great home style Indian vegetarian food.
ENJOY
When looking for a restaurant in Birmingham that would be suitable for my pure vegetarian grandparents, this place checked all the boxes.
The food is just like home, and so I could see a lot of foreign students wanting to come here and have a taste of home, and it's priced reasonable as well.
The generous portions make each dish perfect for sharing and it's a great place for a family meal.
They also have a sweets deli bar situation by the entrance, where you can take away boxes of Indian sweets, which they have many varieties of.
It's safe to say my grandparents loved it and we have been back since.
The atmosphere is nice, very simple layout. Not much decorations at all or seating area.
The store has a very wide choice of vegetarian Indian food on the menu, reasonably priced, and I believe large portions. Flavours were good and well cooked.
Parking is the only problem. You can either on road or for one hour parking outside.
I'd definitely recommend Jyoti's to everyone, as the taste of their products compelled me to leave a review here. I've only recently discovered this place and started to buy sweets/savouries from them - everything that I've tasted so far including barfis, laddu, paida, bhaji, chevda are absolutely delicious and the taste is consistently authentic Indian. In addition, the customer service that I receive has always been excellent.
My wife and I were Vegetarian virgins ,but no more! Just been to Jyoti's, as we booked early, we were the first there, but we asked them to select a choice in foods, for us , which we really enjoyed.Within 15- 20 minutes the place was almost full, which enhanced our experience.
Thought enjoyed everything, and even took some fresh deserts home with us. Would highly recommend, and we didn't miss any of the general meats in the curry. The best plain rice we have had before, so fluffy / fresh, not sticky.
We will be returning with family/ friends.
Thank you so much for the food and friendly staff service.
Jyoti serves authentic Gujarati vegetarian cuisine from fafada, kachori, gadhiya, thepla, chevado… the list goes on and on. The menu is reasonably priced and of course delicious Gujju food! I would say it is take away type namkin store… enjoy
Jyotis is awesome. Nearly everything on their menu is vegan; everything in there is vegetarian. Not a massive restaurant, but a nice, cosy size. We had a party of 7 and they happily rearranged the tables to seat us all together. You can bring your own alcohol along (not soft drinks though, as they are served here)
Food was delicious as always and I always choose a variety of sweets to take home with me :)
So delicious food and cheap as well as best restaurant for indians I visit again surely ❣️
Been visiting Jyoti's Vegetarian for over 10 years! Food never disappoints - huge range of food for takeaway.
I always ring ahead to place an order for pick up, as samosas, mogo etc are fried fresh.
Prices are reasonable and parking is a lot easier to find that other Indian Sweet / Vegetarian takeaway outlets further into Sparkbrook along Stratford Road.
Lovely food, well go back!
Just to make everyone aware, they have closed their restaurant now and they only serve limited items from their menu. The samosa and kachori we tried were very nice. They do sweets and few other Indian savoury snacks.
The best samosas I've had in my life. I'm not from Birmingham but always back here for my food. Great service and tasty food. Ideal place if your vegetarian. They do all kinds of savouries and sweets.
The atmosphere is nice, very simple layout.
The staff are very friendly. The waiter/owner gave us larger portions of starters to accommodate our odd number party with no additional charge so lovely of him!
Very wide choice of vegetarian Indian food on the menu, reasonably priced and large portions. Flavours were good, and well cooked.
Parking is a tad difficult, either on road or limited to one hour parking outside.
Perfect after graduation supper. We ate here after my daughter’s graduation so it was an important occasion but as she is a vegetarian she wanted to go to this restaurant. We had superb service. Our waiter was so friendly and professional. He went out of his way to help. The food was absolutely delicious and some of us tried new tastes. I recommend this restaurant very much and one not just for dedicated vegetarians either. Good wine. Recommend.
Very friendly people, food is always fresh and taste delicious like home made.We highly recommend Jyoti.
Quite simply the best samosas I've ever bought and the green sauce that comes with them is legendary. I've been buying from them since 1986 when they were at Ladypool Road and used to travel all the way from Oldbury to buy them. Now I live near Cannock but just popped in!
Fantastic place. Small, probably less than 20 covers situated towards the back of an Indian 'sweet' shop. The food was wonderful. I went as part of a large group of which only 2 people were Veggie. I can pretty much say that no one missed having meat. The food was tasty with loads of variety (I had a Thali which I highly recommend ). I would highly recommend the place even for non-veggies
