Nestled away on Cornwall Street in the city’s business district lies Opus, a restaurant known for its dedication to sustainability, social responsibility and community engagement. Joining a handful of diners on a Tuesday evening, we selected three courses from the Market Menu, so called as the menu is put together according to what’s good and plentiful that morning at market.
Food
Whetting our appetites with a basket of (cold and dry) bread, we went straight into the paddock farm pork terrine. Presented on an oblong-shaped plate, much like the terrine-dish itself, the meat was surprisingly dense with little jelly. With flavours reminiscent of a hog roast, the accompanying apple puree was artfully but sparsely dotted around the plate along with some heritage pickled vegetables including green cauliflower.
Next, we were treated to an off-menu dish of pan-fried scallops. A personal favourite of mine, they were tasty, fresh, juicy and plump. My slow-braised blade of beef was a very generous portion of soft, fatty meat that was greatly improved by the accompanying jus. The star of this dish was the moreish horseradish mash.
Meanwhile, my dining companion opted for Brixham Market fish of the day, confit fennel, steamed potatoes and autumn greens. The béarnaise sauce jazzed up the juicy and as-promised, market-fresh fish, which turned out to be cod.
Dessert was a citrus posset (creamy and intensely smooth), with fruit salsa (tart) and shortbread and iced blackberry parfait with poached blackberries; both were fresh, lively and delightful.
Service was quiet, leaving it up to curious diners such as ourselves to enquire about the more unusual ingredients on the plate.
Pricing
At £15.50 for three courses, the market menu offers exceptional value for money.
On the a la carte menu, starters are £7 - £10, mains are around £10 - £20, and most desserts are £7.
Overall
A firm favourite with the smart business crowd, the food was conservative with few surprises. The quality of the raw ingredients is clear and flavours are left clean and uncomplicated on purpose to allow this to shine through. I would say Opus is a safe bet for diners craving quality food with provenance at one of the smartest addresses in town.
ALL the lobster! The lobster deal in August that opus do is probably the best value lobster you will ever eat. A whole fat, juicy grilled lobster with chips plus a choice of starter and desert, made even better value with the eat out to help out scheme. This was our first post-pandemic outing and the friendly service, clean interior and fantastic food made this a joy!
My husband had the steak which was also superb.
Great food, fantastic service, had the 3 course meal at a very reasonable price. The hazlenut cheesecake is probably the best cheesecake i have ever tasted. The quail starter was fantastic and full of lots of flavour. Would definitely recommend this place to everyone.
Opus offers a large prestigious environment, down to earth Birmingham hosting and finely prepared earthly dishes. The price you pay? Very little for such a wonderful experience.
Been here for Tuesday dinner with £10 off pp for the steak house menu. The food was really good. Love the chicken wings. It is so tender. The steak was cooked perfectly with full of flavour. The sauce for the steak was also beautiful. Service was good as well. Nothing to complain really.

Went here for a focus group and lunch, staff were very polite and helpful. The food was absolutely outstanding and the wine matched perfectly with it.

I had such a lovely time in Opus restaurant last night from the warm friendly welcome to the excellent service throughout and delicious food ! The staff were so friendly and knowledgable which resulted in myself not having to lift a finger the whole evening ! There was a great selection of wine which was all very reasonably priced too! The food though! The menu with its mere words can’t describe the amazing flavours, quality of produce and how perfectly cooked everything you get from each dish is. Overall, the perfect dining experience ! Couldn’t recommend enough.
Really delicious food and the bar staff made me my own mocktails which was exciting! The food was well presented and had great flavour.
The menu was mainly steak and you could pick the type of steak and which sauce you wanted.
Good restaurant, quality food, portions are small, but quality is up there. Staff are nice, professional and helpful. Would recommend. Veg options are okay too. Large restaurant and can cater to large groups and parties.
Sometimes you wonder why people would be prepared to pay more for a meal out. Going to 'Opus' showed me why it's worth saving up for this sort of thing. They go the extra mile with their 'taster menus' (Fridays and Saturdays) a combination of fantastic foods (five courses) and well chosen wines. We enjoyed every minute (and every bite and sip) of it. No fuss about our special dietary requirements, all taken in their stride. Fantastic experience, recommend it to anyone! Christiaan :-) :-)
We visited during 'eat out to help out'. The set menu was great, understandably limited but high quality. We had a two course meal with lobster for about £17. Fantastic. Staff were excellent, friendly and really helpful. Social distancing of tables was really well done. There were apologies for the meal not being served quicker but we all understand that covid puts extra pressure on these places.

Fantastic. Got the 5 course tasting menu for Valentine's day with paired wines and was not disappointed. Experienced lasted about 3 hours and both the food and wine were amazing. The staff were friendly and helpful, and made the experience very relaxing throughout!
Fantastic menu and service. I went with the veggie menu (I am a full on meat eater) and I was very impressed.

We visited as part of a big group from work, and had one of the private dining areas so our experience might be a little different. The food was good but arrived a bit cold, and it took a long time for the correct dishes for those with dietary restrictions to be served as they often received the wrong one the first time.
Overall it was a great meal but they did struggle to cater for the 40+ people in our group.
Came here for a business meeting, didn't even know that was something Opus did!
The venue was spot on, brilliant service from our arrival.
Lunch was part of our meeting which is why most people would come here.
Exceptional British food. I enjoyed some truly great game dishes.
Although my fellow dinners/attendees all loved their food too.

I recently took my partner here for his birthday and we had a wonderful experience. I was recommended Opus by a friend, I don’t think I would have noticed it otherwise, as it is tucked into a quiet street with scaffolding currently covering the frontage. From the inside you would have no idea these were going on as the atmosphere was warm and relaxing.
The service was brilliant and definitely fits into the fine dining category. We were the first diners to arrive but this wasn’t a problem as we were sat in the window and the room didn’t feel empty. The tables gradually filled up around us but we barely noticed due to the layout of the restaurant.
There is a set menu offering two or three courses as well as 50% off offers on some of the wine if you are willing to join their free loyalty scheme. We opted for a two course menu - I enjoyed a fishcake starter followed by duck for the main course. Both were fantastically presented and full of flavour. Accompanying this we had a sparkling rosé which the server kept topped up throughout our sitting. The prices were more than reasonable considering the quality of the food on offer.
What struck me was the variety of dishes available and they offer an alternative menu especially for vegetarians. There was also a card advertising upcoming special events such as a cheese taster menu evening, a variant on their usual tasting menu. I will definitely be visiting again soon for the lobster that is an upcoming special on the set menu.
Four of us had a fantastic night here on Saturday. The menu had a fabulous range of dishes and the food was excellent. Service was perfect; in the bar and in the restaurant. As recommendations try the butternut squash and autumn seed agnolotti starter; the flavours were delicious, and the venison main course was amazing. My husband is still talking of the steak as being the best he's ever had anywhere. If you've not tried Opus don't wait any longer.
Had an exceptional meal here on Thursday lunchtime. The restaurant was quite quiet but the service was without fault. We all really enjoyed the food and wine made better by the January half price offer. If you have never been to Opus use this generous deal to experience it.
