Reviews The Karczma

Words cannot fully justify just how depressing the building which houses The Karczma is. It’s the kind of sixties architecture that I thought we were trying to eradicate in the city. It’s a sad slab of square grey concrete in a forgotten part of town. It’s Eastenders on Christmas Day.  Inside could not be more different – its an ode to the inns of the Tatra mountains, seen through the tainted eyes of someone who misses them.  There is straw thatched ceilings and fake fur hides adorning the backs of benches.  Walls are distressed pink.  Polish music plays in the background.  I found it difficult to not laugh, despite being fully aware that whoever designed the space did so with serious intention.

Dine Birmingham
+3.5
The Karczma Polish Restaurant is a hidden gem located just behind Birmingham Moor Street Station, offering the city’s only opportunity to dine Polish style.

The recent plaudits, from acclaimed TV and Guardian food critic Jay Rayner, have brought a new wave of clientele to The Karczma, all curious to sample the delights of a Polish kitchen.

Personally, I’ve always known about there being a restaurant in that spot. Being partly of Polish parentage, I would visit The Karczma regularly in its former guise when it belonged to the Polish Social Club, still at that building. The last few years have seen many changes including new management, a business detachment from the Polish club and a re-vamp in both décor and general offering.

Atmosphere

The word ‘Karczma’ itself translated means ‘inn or tavern’ and its décor upon entry facsimiles that of a traditional Polish mountain chalet, with silver birch tree cladding, thatched ceilings, wooden carvings and crocheted doilies. The seating is made up of solid wooden tables and benches with shaggy fleece-covered stools adorning the bar area. The atmosphere is very relaxed, quite homely and complemented by modern Polish music that pipes through the restaurant.

The dining demographic is mainly made up of adult groups but families are accommodated and children are welcome.

Food

As an appetiser included in your meal price, crusty bread, szmalec and whole large gherkins (home-grown rather than jarred cocktail versions) are available once you’ve ordered. You can go up to a designated table already set up with the items and help yourself. Szmalec (pronounced ‘shmalets’) is basically a hardened pork dripping and lard spread (paté-esque). Although not well-known to the British palate, it is somewhat of a delicacy in Poland as well as other parts of Eastern Europe. As szmalec isn’t vegetarian, I opted for the bread and gherkins only, which certainly bridged the gap between ordering and the meal arriving, although meals are served quite promptly.

On this visit, I was eating with a group of meat-eating friends (who like me are of Polish descent). They all opted for the Placek po Zbojnicku. It consists of beef stew and mushrooms wrapped in a potato pancake with an assorted vegetable salad. The portion size was extremely generous, beef was commented upon as tender and the pancake fluffy yet crisp.

For myself as the token vegetarian of the group, I normally go for the Pierogi, which follow the same principle as ravioli - dough parcels stuffed with a filling. Veggie-friendly options include cabbage & mushroom or Russian style which contains mashed potato. But on this occasion, I decided to go for Placki (pronounced – ‘platz-ki’), which are fried potato cakes served with sour cream. The portion contained 3 large, thick placki with a little pot of sour cream and a salad garnish. The potato was cooked well and fried to a nice golden colour.

Although filling and tasty, I would have preferred it served as a two-placki portion with a large salad or with some something else to add variety to it. Perhaps some cooked vegetables.

The coding of vegetarian food on the menu at The Karczma is misleading and needs to be revised. The ‘V’ symbol denoting vegetarian food can be found against dishes that are fish-based, and so not acceptable for strict vegetarian diets. Especially as a regular diner, I would like to see more Polish-style vegetarian dishes offered which I’m sure other diners would welcome and enjoy as well. For instance – dishes such as vegetarian Bigos(cabbage stew) or Golabki (cabbage rolls filled with rice/grains) or even a vegetarian version of the Placek po Zbojnicku would all make for good alternative options.

Dessert-wise, traditional Polish apple cake (Szarlotka – pronounced ‘Sharlotka’) and cheesecake on a biscuit base (Sernik) are the main options representing Polish cuisine. I had the szarlotka which is served with cream or ice cream. A base of cake with a puréed apple layer is covered in a crumbled topping. More generic offerings such as ice cream and sweet pancakes are also available.

Drinks

A range of soft and alcoholic drinks are on offer. Polish beer (Zywiec), dominates the ale options, although other beers are available. Other alcoholic beverages include a range of spirits and wines with a focus on specialty vodkas, following its reputation as the national drink of Poland. Some to try are Zubrowka, a rye vodka best served with apple juice and Wisniowka, a cherry liqueur, ideal to have post-meal in a shot-glass measure. Hot drinks are available in all forms including tea Polish style, which is black with a slice of lemon.

Pricing

Prices have increased slightly recently but dishes are still priced competitively considering city centre location, portion size offered and the fact that the food is made on site in a ‘home-cooking’ style. The one thing I would suggest is that the desserts could be a little cheaper and this may encourage more diners to try them.

Pierogi (stuffed dough parcels) = £7.20

Placki (fried potato cakes) = £7.20

Placek po Zbojnicku (Beef stew and mushrooms with potato pancake) = £14.00

Szarlotka (Polish apple cake) = £5.50

Sernik (cheesecake) = £5.20

Overall

A unique venue ideal for experiencing authentic Polish cuisine and hospitality, centrally located yet far enough to be away from busy areas. Good, home-cooked, rustic meals with some dishes available for vegetarians. The addition of a few more, plus more accurate signposting of veggie dishes, would push the menu closer to perfect.

Well hidden from the busy streets of the city! This place gives you a warm feel with its cozy decor and prepares you for the great feast that you will soon experience! The duck was slow cooked and extremely juicy! The stew was made to perfection and the chicken liver was from another planet! Great selection of polish beers and vodkas! The staff was polite and attentive! The prices reflect the quality and the quantities are impressive!

Delicious food, beautiful interior design, kind and polite service. Me and my wife visit this place quite regular and we have never been disappointed. Very authentic polish cuisine, wide range of drinks, hot, cold, alcoholic and non. If you are looking for the place to chill and eat well, this is the one we can recommend to you.

Loved the food and interior of the restaurant. They also have a selection of drinks including Polish vodka. The sharing platter we ordered was enormous which included 2 types of soup, the giant platter along with some veggies and dessert afterwards. 6 of us couldn't finish everything. Highly recommended!

A cute romantic restaurant near the train station. The food here is fantastic. I forget what the actual name of the dish is, but it was the potato pancake with beef stew. The potato pancake in particular was the highlight of the dish, with it being fluffy and well seasoned. Really cosy atmosphere and the staff was really friendly.

Amazing food, really nice vibe. I believe if in a Polish restaurant you see many Polish guests, it's a good sign, must be the place to be. I ran in from the cold and had an amazing żurek, followed by a variety of dumplings. They also have a nice selection of drinks. Great staff, good prices, I will definitely be back! Dzięki!!!

Absolutely love it here. The staff are so nice and friendly and the decor and atmosphere make it really romantic and cosy. The food and drinks are fab, although I would say it's more of a main course kind of place as the desserts are quite limited. Highly recommended.❤️

Delicious food, friendly service and lovely atmosphere for a meal. We'd planned on visiting a while ago but was put off as it seemed like a meat heavy menu and my partner is vegetarian, but the veggie options were amazing! And the fish as well. We wish we'd have visited sooner. Best and biggest dumplings I've ever had. 10/10 would recommend.

Delicious food and lovely atmosphere - we had a great time, many Polish favourites are on the menu. The portions were large , and the food was all delicious and fresh. I can in particular recommend the pan fried trout and the apple pie. Well worth a visit! We have been back after three years and we had another amazing meal!

Visited for the first time in a few years for my birthday and was delighted to find very little has changed. Friendly, efficient and knowledgeable service, good quality ingredients, extremely large portions!!! The ham platter was a new addition to the menu since my previous visits. The platter for two is easily large enough as a starter for four people if main courses are being ordered too. The pork knuckle in cabbage (pictured) is every bit as good said remembered. Highly recommend, I won’t leave it so long to visit again.

Fab food and loads of it! Beef stew was incredible. Served in the lightest and crispiest potato pancake I've ever had! You need to take a bit of cash if you want to leave a gratuity as they don't have the facility to add it to a card payment.

This is such a lovely restaurant! The food was excellent with a great selection of traditional home cooked polish dishes. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. I would definitely recommend dining here for something better than the normal chain restaurants.

A slice of Poland at this quirky restaurant. It's been around for over 5 years so it's not new, but our first visit. Staff were all extremely friendly. There was some live music on in one part of the restaurant but unfortunately they didn't move around the odd shape layout so many diners could not see or hear them. The starter we had was the traditional soup in bread which was delicious. The mains were chicken with cheese and mushrooms. Unfortunately the cheese had been left to go hard and the chicken was definitely over cooked. The other dish was mixed dumplings and was nice. Overall we would and will return.

I thought I knew Birmingham City Centre. I thought I knew where all the best food spots were. I was wrong. Tucked away just round the corner from the hustle and bustle of the Bullring is this delightful Polish themed restaurant. Walk inside and prepare to be transported to comfy, traditional Polish surroundings. The large wooden tables and benches covered in animal fur nod to its Prussian roots. Service is relaxed, warm; the staffs recommendations were spot on. The food served is hearty, large in portion size and very tasty. The Karczma Restaurant caters for all, more so for groups. Bring your appetite, a smile and a bag to take the left overs home. The food portions are huge.

Gorgeous, authentic polish restaurant in central Birmingham. I stumbled across this gem years ago and haven’t been back to Birmingham since. Now that I’ve had the opportunity to come back I enjoyed having dinner here again, and the quality of food and deliciousness is just as good as it was years ago. Highly recommend.

Very nice ambient, completely decorated in traditional Polish style. Unfortunately they didn't serve and Polish food for the breakfast but even British full-monty was yummy. 4 stars just because they forgot to bring me glass of water and didn't ask me if I want something else after breakfast (dessert).

The żurek is incredible as well as the pierogi. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to experience traditional Polish food. Also the żywiec is a lovely beer to go along with the food.
