What a fantastic place! Second visit for us whilst visiting our son & his family. Celebrating my birthday we enjoyed crab soup, mussels, pint of prawns, a (huge) whole crab, roasted cod and lobster thermidor. Wonderful welcome, especially for our grandson, and quality, service (Jane) & value in equal measure. Fabulous, thanks guys! On top of that we enjoyed a beautiful crab, mac & cheese from the take away menu when we got home :)
We went for lunch on Bank Holiday Monday - 28th May. A party of 8 and 2 dogs, the atmosphere was relaxed and the staff were brilliant and friendly. We tried many things that were new to some of us, Spider Crab, Scallops and cooked oysters, and all of it was excellent !! I highly recommend this restaurant to everybody, they even had a separate menu for dogs, (although they couldn't get past the doggie ice cream) !!
Amazing food, great atmosphere, mussels were the biggest I've seen; So, we found this venue after reading the reviews; and arrived at a wonderfully understated shed with large decorated awning. The theme is of the beach (and signs indicate that you should watch the tide times for when you leave!). Plastic chairs, sand buckets for used mussel shells; and the bill even comes in a charming tiny wooden 'pirates' treasure chest. The food was wonderful, the fish fresh, most important however was that the atmosphere was charming and friendly.
Just had a fantastic evening at the Oyster Shack, the food was so tasty, freshly made and everyone found something scrummy to eat! The location is stunning and we would definitely recommend. Not cheap but worth it for a special night.
We were really lucky to find the Oyster Shack during a recent weekend away to Bigbury on sea. The food, atmosphere and staff were top class! It was that good we returned for a second night in a row. The staff were fantastic with our 3 year old twin girls, who thoroughly enjoyed the experience of watching mummy and daddy eat fresh lobster and crab . If you are visiting the area, definitely book a table and don't miss out!
Authentic, relaxed setting in rural location not far from Bigbury. Great seafood menu and friendly staff
Fabulous seafood tavern.
The food was very well prepared and the environment gorgeous.
The staff is fabulous!!!!
Such a great job guys!
Excellent and characterful restaurant with great staff and magnificent food. So impressed we’ve booked again!
We came upon this restaurant as we were exploring Devon... what a delight! Wonderful food, funky ambience, friendly service and we loved the fact you made dinners for dogs too! She thoroughly enjoyed her chicken, veg and flaxseeds
Went for an early dinner for the first time after hearing all the views on fb. Surprised to see so many people there already! Fab atmosphere with friendly staff and great chefs! Well done guys, worth the drive from plymouth!! X
Great place. Really relaxing, informal atmosphere. Very friendly staff and extremely good food.
My idea of heaven ! Relaxed dining but excellent quality food !!! A real quirky little place with amazing service !!! I didn't catch our waiters name ( said he lived in Plymouth ) but his service was excellent !! He engaged with our 9 year old some and made very good recommendations ! All of our food was amazing , we tried oysters for the first time which were delicious and my crab and my husbands sole was just delish ! Drinks I thought were very reasonably priced to !!! We will be back next year without a doubt , a shame we live 3 hours away or we would be there every weekend !! Thank you !
Relaxed setting, amazing fresh food and fantastic friendly service! If we ever visit the area again we will most definitely be back!
If you have room for dessert The Plum Sponge Pudding was incredible
Wonderful, super dog friendly place (as in you are not even feeling like a castaway just because you are with a dog :))
Delicious and fresh food with lovely staff. Loved the tap in the restroom as well, just forgot to take a pic, but now you have to check it out for yourself :) limited parking so booking in advance might be recommended.
Wonderful place with restricted entry due to the tides which adds to it’s quirkiness frankly - we didn’t have a table but arrived at 5pm and they squeezed us in for an hour which was brilliant.
Food was lovely, service was even better - lovely place to have an early dinner in the Devon sunshine.
Absolutely loved every part of my visit! The food was delicious and the service was incredible. Highly recommend going there!
First time visit. Hidden away and larger than expected. Parking was a little tight but eventually we managed to park up. Watch out for the high tide flooding the road otherwise you'll need to take the long way round.
Varied dining spaces from inside the restaurant building to under cover in the adjacent space or a handful to high tables outside next to the old Bedford. Varied menu with the emphasis on seafood of course. But carnivores and Vg/V diets also catered for (but better to check with the waiting staff as the menu wasn't marked up). Talking of which the waiter was fantastic. Friendly, informed and achieving the perfect balance of availability without intruding.
Which brings us to the food and drinks. Lots of wine options although we weren't in the mood to sample any, so a NA lager, juice and soft drink were ordered along with a carafe of tap water. The starters arrived very quickly, presumably either ready prepared or easily assembled. The crab and saffron croquettes and the prawn and crab tacos stood out, the prawn cocktail being a little heavy on what seemed like paprika rather than cayenne pepper. The BBQ catch of the day were served with a lovely chick peas and tomato accompaniment. A garlic butter basted lobster joined the table along with a bread board and the obligatory French fries. Coffees and a churros finished us off. We left with very satisfied stomachs and big smiles, hoping to return before too long.
Lovely relaxed lunch. Friendly & efficient service. The scallops & mussels were particularly good.
Located in a beautiful area. I had the best oyster starter here, fresh, sweet and creative! Inspirational food 🥹
I have to order the 6 flavors oysters starter twice to satisfied myself, still can’t decide which flavor is my favorite 🥰 staff are very knowledgeable and helpful, busy place but cozy. Will try to come back sometime soon
The decor suits the name - it's quite unusual and colourful. We had a warm welcome from the staff, who were very friendly, and the food was yummy. I also loved the beach bucket to put the bits of lobster shell in.
This was lunch before heading home after our weeks holiday spent in a lovely cottage in Kingston. The food was fantastic. The sea bream was so fresh. It tasted so good. Cooked to perfection. The mussels were excellent. The prawns in garlic butter was very nice - even my son liked it and he never usually have this! Seafood croquettes were also very good. My son who don't usually eat fish that much either, unless we ask him to eat it, loved the pan fried Pollock. It was a surprise to us. I think it was the freshness of the fish that did it. He finished the The whole piece of fish by himself. The service was excellent as well. We sounded it of with ice cream which we also enjoyed. This restaurant was recommended by our cottage and I also fully recommend it to anyone who are in the vicinity.
Unbelievable food. Osyters are to die for - loved the selection of toppings! Service is super friendly - we felt at ease right away. If you've booked the 7/7.30pm sitting, don't worry they don't close at that time!
One of our favourite restaurants ever, the staff are wonderful and the food is gorgeous! Even the drive to and from is all part of it and incredibly picturesque. It says on the door "welcome to paradise" and to me an afternoon spent there is heaven
I loved this place. The location is totally unexpected. As soon as you walk in, it looks and feels like a shack.
The service was exemplary. Attentive, friendly, efficient.
The food was the best we had in Devon. The octopus and the king prawn croquettes were to die for.
Book early, as it’s hard to get a table!
We had the catch of the day and a couple of taster oysters which were all very fresh. Really relaxing atmosphere and good value for money. A great casual place to go for some seafood.
Worth making a detour for. Book ahead.
The food is superb, and the staff are so friendly and helpful. We had half a dozen raw oysters and another cooked. With a mix of toppings. All beautiful. For veggies, the gnocchi was brilliant, maybe the best we've had.
Lovely place. Fantastic seafood, great atmosphere and friendly service, plus dog friendly. Also pretty good value given the quality of the food. We turned up around 6 on a Friday evening in July and they managed to find us a table - I think if we'd been any later we'd have struggled. Definitely recommend dropping by if you're in the area looking for something a bit more refined than fish and chips or pub fare!
We visited earlier in the week and food and service were so amazing we came back again. Quality and freshness of seafood was amazing, crab and prawn tacos and local oysters delicious as starters and the lobster and crab were amazing. Staff really friendly and fun plus a lovely relaxed setting, can't wait to come back
What a find! Great good, dog friendly and helpful staff. Will be back!
Will certainly revisit and have no hesitation recommending. We visited in October with 2 teenage kids, 2 adults and a dog. The kids had pasta (shame) and it was surprisingly good. The Thai monkfish was excellent (one bit of monkfish short of perfect. The whole fresh crab was fantastic- just note you are in for the long haul. Even the dogs fish dish looked great.
This quirky and unique restaurant is a must visit for those who love fish or seafood visiting the Bigbury area. Ingredients are super fresh, and the menu caters for all ages and appetites. Service attentive and friendly. We loved it, and will definitely return.
