Worth visiting!
Went for first time on a Thursday evening in summer 2022, then again two weeks later.
Consists of three rooms knocked together to form long, wide L-shape room that is nicely decorated and furnished, with plenty of clear floor space in middle part.
Beer and other drinks decent and similar price as pubs nearby. Staff helpful and pleasant, and other customers (mostly youngish) were almost all* pleasant, welcoming and friendly.
Sat in area at short end of the L. Furniture there comprises two low tables and two high tables, which is probably too much. Because area also gives access to toilets and beer garden. Resulting traffic made it feel cramped, esp for those sitting nearest the back. So, stayed at bar in the middle room on second visit.
Karaoke with Debbie on a Thursday night excellent, EVERY THURSDAY 8PM - 11.30 PM. She has a great-sounding system with no glitches (such as out of sync or frozen lyrics) and you just give her your name then tell her what song you want when you're called up. Works a treat, super efficient, fast and no one misses their turn.
There is a pay and display car park with space for twenty-five or so cars out the back.
*A £100 penalty will be claimed by well known parking sharks Britannia Parking in event of any transgression!*
But the parking ticket price can be refunded towards drinks at the bar, on production of the counterfoil. Note that lighting is poor in the car park and it's deserted at night.
*The only real negative - another customer (a karaoke regular, so I was told - so you might be safe on nights other than Thursday) who often accosts the DJ and other customers. Apparently, some find him amusing.
This is a pleasant little local pub that my wife and I like to call in on occasion when we are in bexleyheath. We usually stop in for a few hours of an afternoon when in town and always find it decent and welcoming with affordable prices too. Obviously a watering hole for the residents nearby (as most drinkers seem to know each other) but everyone minds their own business and allow you to go about yours unhindered. It also has a nice beer garden that we sat in and enjoyed. Down to earth efficient polite barstaff who pour a good pint, this for us is a great little 'stop off' that breaks our journey home and we have no cause of complaint so far.
Great pub under new management. Nice new modern feel inside and large beer garden. Friendly staff and feels quite a friendly atmosphere in there.
Great small pub - lived in area for 32 years 1st visit. Great pint of Guinness!!!
My word,a local pub without the backing of a chain and it's the best pub in Bexleyheath.
Get out of the stagnant Wetherspoons and enjoy the comfort of a real pub with real people and real atmosphere
Nice local worth re trying (had some financial problems and closed for a while). Wine selection looks good but haven't tried. Beer range is reasonable, some crafts.
Great pub, great atmosphere and friendly, efficient bar people.
Another great night in the Volly. Great atmosphere and great music.
Decent prices, large beer garden
A little hidden away pub that I wouldn't have thought about. However what a lovely hideaway, atmosphere cosy, very friendly & welcoming staff. Lovely food, good price, who could ask for more. DEFINITELY go back again and recommend to other people and to top it all very cosy comfortable furniture. We'll done The Volunteer x
Great community-owned pub with two ales on hand pump. Said beers are keenly priced which proves they don't need to be £4 and above as in other pubs. The beers were (Green King) Old Speckled Hen 4.5%. and (Green King) Ruddles Best Bitter 3.7%. Both beers in excellent condition.
My group of four shared the space with another group of about six who were around the tv (the opposite end of bar) watching football and cheering. We stayed to closing, the other punters left once the football ended.
A friend lives nearby and the place had a lovely feel of being a real 'local'. He was greeted by staff and customers alike and us 5 'extras' were also made to feel welcome. Big enough to seat 20+ people easily, yet small enough to make visitors feel part of the community, it also had at least 3 real ales and a menu to suit most appetites and tastes at reasonable prices.
Great refurbishment but still very much a 'local'. Lovely, friendly staff. Had a fun night for my sister's birthday party. Would certainly pop recommend.
The volunteer is a great pub, full of nice people!! And the staff go the extra mile, working so hard under the present circumstances to deliver your food and drink with a smile,a laugh and of course the bill.
Friendly service, good beer reasonable prices.will go back
Lovely friendly pub which was saved by customers who bought it and redecorated it. Good food n regular entertainment
