We stumbled across this place on our first morning in Belfast. The bar looks fantastic, the food is tasty and reasonable and the lady who served us was lovely and very professional. We will definitely be tempted back for an evening by their great service and cocktail menu!
We visited Belfast recently for a mini break and came across this bar on our sightseeing and decided to give it a go.
The décor was quirky but with some nice period features which overall had a fabulous affect. We tried the Guinness and did the 3 buckets offer which for a light bite for two was perfect. We had the meatballs, chicken skewers and asparagus fries all delicious and came out pretty quickly.
Although we don't think it is a gay bar, they did have the pride flag and brochures for pride happening that weekend - which was lovely to see the bar being inclusive and welcoming to all in the community.
We hope to visit Belfast again and happily stop by again.
Great restaurant with friendly service. We visited Belfast for 3 days and came here on the first night. Both burgers were delicious, one beef burger and one buttermilk chicken. Lovely fluffy chips. We liked it so much in here that we visited again on the second night but to try the desserts. Would recommend!
Just been to the northern whig with my wife for one of the best meals I've had in belfast first time I've been there ( wife had been before) definitely won't be the last everything was top quality from excellent service from Mark and the big fella ( didn't get your name sorry big guy) staff were friendly and helpful definitely not overbearing like some places. Place is really relaxing and cosy. Food was out of this world times between dishes was just right portion sizes were massive you won't leave there hungry. Staff know how to make cocktails. Would recommend the northern whig to anyone for a great meal and drinks .
The food was absolutely delicious the best I’ve had out in a long time. The cocktails were lovely and service was great. Will definitely be back very soon.
Nice food nice astomspere friendly staff. There was an offer on called beat the clock from 5pm to 5.30pm it gave you 50% off the food which was great definitely worth a visit.
Fantastic dining experience. From the friendly staff to the delicious food. No complaints. Had creamy mushrooms on bruschetta for starter and roast ham marinaded in Guinness with all the trimmings for main. Highly recommended. Beat the clock currently runs from 5pm with 5-5:30 giving 50% off food!
The food was really good.. a step up from pub grub..
Definitely worth going on the beat the clock days. Up to 50% off your meal.. hard to beat😁
Really nice fish and chips - good flavor, crispy batter, and served piping hot straight out of the fryer. Really friendly service as well and chill atmosphere.
My wife and I ate here while we were in Belfast. The food was absolutely incredible. I had the creamy garlic mushrooms appetizer and was blown away. My wife got the steak sandwich which was also incredible. Had the fish and chips for my main which was also really good, just not quite as mind blowing as the mushrooms and steak sandwich since I basically knew what to expect. Our server was Mirek and he was great.
Great pints, great food & great staff!! The Whig never disappoints. Beat the clock is well worth the money. Monday to Wednesday, 5til7. The mussels were delicious, as was the chicken stack; 2 generous pieces of chicken served on a bed of creamy mash with pepper sauce & veg 😋 My fiancé had soup followed by a burger with chunky home made chips. 😋Was a pleasure to by served by Mark. A credit to The Whig.

Impecable service from Mirek! ✨
Super friendly and with excellent reviews about local wiskeys! 🥃🤎
The food was also great!
Super fresh salmon and tasty soup!
Definitely to try and enjoy the atmosphere there.
Full house! Incredible nice relation food quality and price! 👏
Dont doubt it! must try!
Welcome was genuine, place was spotless, toilets were well stocked and clean and all in working order. Decor was lovely and the food was fresh, generous and reasonably priced. The waiter we had Mirek was fantastic.. really couldn't do enough but wasn't over baring at all..he made the night for me. Will definitely recommend and will certainly return! Well done to all the staff that keep this place going today could not fault any of you. 👏👏👏👏👏
Very reasonable prices, big portions for the 'light bites' section of the menu. The man who waited our table was good natured and efficient. Will definitely go back.
Just home after my first meal in The Northern Whig and it definitely will not be the last. Wee problem when we arrived as booking couldn’t be found but staff got a table sorted out for me and my wife in a few minutes. We both started with creamy mushrooms which where delicious with a lovely fresh crisp salad next I had the Sirloin rare, absolutely perfectly cooked with fantastic pepper sauce honestly one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Michelle had the chicken stack which she also thought was excellent, we were too stuffed to think about dessert I’ll leave that for our next visit, we’ll definitely be back 100% recommend.
Great place, tasty food. Our server was the absolute best! Very friendly and helpful and we never had to wait long.
We came in on a Friday evening, music was sort of loud, which we would have expected. However, another table asked for the music to be pumped up even further, and at that point we were unable to hold a conversation. We wanted desert originally but then decided to leave as it was a bit too much. Would have easily been 5 stars otherwise - definitely recommend!
We visited this restaurant after finding out that our favourite place had stopped serving food at 1920. We stumbled across the Northern Whig and decided to give it a go. Interesting eating place with funky blue lighting. Upon entering, you have to find the restaurant bit and the sign you you wait to be seated. There is a good selection of food and the prices are reasonable. There are also meal deals available. Three courses for two people came to £54 with a round of drinks.
I didn't have a reservation but the staff were very accommodating and found me a table on what was quite a busy night. In particular I have to commend Mark and Marek who were on front of house. They were both polite, attentive, and really made me feel welcome. Once I'd ordered, my fish and chips arrived very quickly and was exactly what I was looking for. Delicious, well cooked, and a portion size that wasn't messing about: the cocktail I had with it was also very good. All in all I would certainly visit again, I would definitely bring my family, and I will be mentioning it to anyone I know visiting Belfast in the future.
My starter soup was more warm than hot otherwise this would have easily been 5 stars, the chicken in the chicken salad was gorgeous but maybe add in a few cherry or plum tomatoes?
Really great service from our server - very friendly with a bit of banter, no delays, no issues with any of the food. Thank you! The Korean fried crispy chicken and chips packed a decent punch - really good.
Sad that the impact of covid is being felt with bars, which should be hiving with people, empty at this time of year.
