Came upon this excellent café just across the road from the Buttermarket. Both the owner and the young waitress who served me were very friendly and made me feel really welcome. The downstairs café is cosy with comfortable banquettes, lots of nice plants and magazines to read. Found the log fire very inviting on a chilly wet day! There's another cosy room and toilets upstairs. They serve sandwiches, salads and light lunches, and you can order wine and beer as well as hot drinks. Opted for the ploughman's lunch and it really was a cut above average: lovely thick ham, terrine, cheese, and hard-boiled egg with chutney, grapes, and a crisp salad sprinkled with pumpkin seeds. Very tasty and filling, and the bread was so fresh! The tea was nice and hot. Could not resist trying a tiffin for afters, and it was delicious! The lunch cost a bit more than I'd normally pay, but it was well worth it for the quality of the food and service. Afterwards I had a look inside their little shop next door. Lots of foodie treats and also some nice crafts, pictures, toiletries and gifts. The lady who served me was very helpful, and I bought a lovely toiletry bag. Overall a very enjoyable lunch experience. I highly recommend!

Very nice little place with a real log fire and pleasant owners. Escaped from the rain during Storm Babet and had slices of Chocolate Cake and Carrot Cake washed down by Americano Coffee. Finished off with a nice glass of Baileys.

We stopped by for lunch and so glad we did! Fantastic service and lovely food paired with a tasty house white. Shame we did not have room for dessert as the cakes looked amazing! Purchased up a couple of chutney's on our way out which were also very tasty. Recommend the beetroot and horseradish 👌

A hidden gem on the bank of Barnard Castle's high street. If you're looking for exquisite food, warm friendly service and a quirky environment to match, The Artisan Corner over delivers in every way. The food is almost certainly a cut above other establishments in town and is not far off one Michelin Star. Pricey but fair, the chef serves up a range of specials and soups which would normally be found in a high end hotel. Matched with good coffee and a delicatessen to peruse afterwards, this is most certainly worth a visit.

Called in on Friday 23rd August around 3pm. Used to know Simon & Robert when they ran the Spotted Dog at High Coniscliffe a few years ago. I thought the bistro was faultless and the wine was excellent. Most of all Val my wife and myself thought it would be a great place to frequent on a Friday/ Saturday evening and duly booked. These are lovely guys whose hospitality is second to none and deserve every success in their venture.

Lovely boutique café at the bottom of the marketplace, as its name suggests, on the corner of the road to Scotch Corner. Serves a lovely coffee, but the scones are wonderfully light and delicious, even though the cheese scone has cheese all the way through. The menu has hot meals, salads, sandwiches and all sorts, and the server is very pleasant. Sounds from the conversation that some of the other people in the café are locals and regulars, which certainly is an endorsement.

My favourite place to sit with the best Latte and almond croissant in Barnard Castle. Bread and cakes are fabulous. Staff are very welcoming and helpful.

Great place to stock up on food essentials and everyday luxuries. Knowledgeable staff can guide you to your perfect purchase. If you can resist the cakes and pastries you are a stronger person than I am.

Excellent meals especially in the evenings - need to book as table numbers restricted to keep it quiet. Usually 5 specials are available which regularly change. Saturday night - garlic prawns with mushrooms; cajun chicken were tge tops. Also have the local brewed beer.
