One of the best fish and chips shop I have ever been to.
Very well cooked fish and very yummy potatoes. Beautiful crispy butter and very good service.
Probably the best fish and chips I have had in years. Well cooked food that was perfect, good size portions and very friendly service. 2 adult fish and chips, 1 kids fish and chips and 3 soft drinks for £25. A few tables to eat in which we used
I will definitely come back next time I'm in Barmouth
A lot of fish and chips shops get the “best in the world/UK/county/town” status but The Mermaid really does live up to the billing. Everything was amazing. Only problem is the queues can also be immense, but worth the wait!
Busier than last year (after the positive Times review). Still great fish n chips. Expect to queue due to popularity. Queue moves due to efficiency of staff.
Friendly staff, massive chunky fish which tasted super fresh! Really lovely, very impressed. Will be back next time we are in Barmouth.
Best fish and chips we had! The batter was crispy and so were the chips. We bought home to eat and they were still hot and crispy. I guess coz it’s in a box and not wrapped in paper. The fish was chunky and not overcooked. We ordered 3 pieces of cod and 1 portion of chips.
A trip down memory lane for me. We used to get our dinners there when holidaying 40 years ago, and the food was always good. It's nice to see that things haven't changed. The chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, as a good chip should be. The cod was great and the batter crisp and golden. Top marks...
Best chippy in Barmouth, the only one queuing out the door for good reason! Been here countless times and always amazing, staff are always polite too. Decent enough prices and quick service.
A Seaside Gem for Authentic Fish and Chips!
I recently had the pleasure of visiting The Mermaid, a charming establishment that has been delighting taste buds with its fantastic, award-winning fish and chips since 1964. Nestled along the stunning Mid Wales coastline, this eatery promises a truly authentic seaside experience.
One of the standout features of The Mermaid is its unwavering commitment to using 100% natural ingredients. The result? Fish and chips that taste like they were plucked straight from the ocean and cooked to perfection. The freshness of the food lends an unmistakable quality to every bite, making it clear why this place has earned its spot as one of the Times Newspaper’s top 10 UK Chip Shops.
I couldn't agree more with Chris Haslam's sentiments when he wrote, "What beverage pairs best with fish and chips? Champagne? An unoaked chardonnay? A pint of bitter? All are good, but none beats a mug of tea." The Mermaid takes this sentiment to heart, serving up a mug of tea that complements their crunchy battered cod and impeccably cooked chips. Unlike the typical teabag-in-a-cup approach, here it's served from a metal pot, strong and full of flavor.
The owners, Will and Nina Huntley, have managed to maintain the essence of traditional fish and chips while consistently delivering a memorable culinary experience. Despite the long queues that seem to be a testament to the establishment's popularity, the wait is undoubtedly worth it. The Huntleys' dedication to quality shines through in every detail, from the taste of their offerings to the warm and inviting ambiance.
Whether you're a local or a visitor, if you're craving a genuine taste of the British seaside, The Mermaid is a must-visit. With its rich history, commitment to using natural ingredients, and the resounding endorsement from food critics and patrons alike, this establishment has truly earned its title as the best chippy in town. Don't miss out on this exceptional culinary journey!
Highly recommended.
Great fish and chip shop. Ate from here twice on holiday. Excellent chips both times and the cod and cod roes were so fresh Nd tasty! First time in a long while I didn't have to wait for the roe to be cooked. Great variety of choice and well worth the wait. This place is very popular, locals love it too which is a great endorsement.
Come down to Barmouth for a wander around whilst staying locally for a week. Seen this place on a YouTube channel a while ago so thought I’d pop in. Very possibly THE very best fish and chips I’ve ever had from a takeaway. Can definitely recommend 100%!!
Lovely fish n chips and the curry sauce was one of the best, nice and spicy but not too spicy. Always worth the wait if there's a que and staff are always welcoming and friendly.
Although busy Being busy is a sign of popularity) my wife was served very quickly, and our food was plentiful and very nice. I really enjoyed my meal, as did my wife, and our Dog, who was given a small tub of free chips.
I waited outside, sat on the chippy's bench with our dog, where I was talking to a lovely Gentleman, who turned out to be the owner. I can't recommend The Mermaid highly enough 😊👍
Is this the most amazing fish and chips that will change your life, cure all your ailments and put you on the path to realise your full potential?
No, but it is pretty darn good. Chunky fish, potatoey chips, lovely peas and curry.
Wish they squirted a little less vinegar on the fish, mine got so much the batter broke off and I thought it would come back to life at some point.
Service was pretty good considering the long queue.
This has to be the best fish & chip shop in Barmouth. The food is always fresh and hot and tastes great. The staff are lovely, inevitably there's a que, but what fo you expect it's a chippy in a seaside location
I visit Barmouth 3 or 4 times a year from Scotland and the mermaid is a priority on my meal list. Highly recommend the mermaid , be patient if there's a que it's wort it
The very best fish & chips I've had in years! Perfectly cooked, lovely crisp batter, quick and friendly service. (Second visit Nov 22 - every bit as good as the first!) (Third visit March 23 - excellent again!)
The food is amazing, I had some chicken. The spice and flavouring was perfect. The quene is usually quite long but I can see why with the chicken being that good. The atmosphere isn't the greatest as the area around the shop isn't very sceneric, but at the same time it's right in the middle of town.
Fantastic fish and chips were very tasty.
Would have given 5 stars if the potatoes/chips were the type that had a flavour. The chips were very nice but could have been a better good size though. Fish tasty, batter crispy but not well done, cooked to perfection. Seemed to only get a half-sized fish. Both fried fresh. Fish and chips £6.50
The owner was very friendly. He came to our table and chatted with us. Shared his mini eggs chocolate with us as well.
Very tasty. Freshly cooked lovely cod £6 and chips £3. Could have been a little bigger portion size but really enjoyed them. Nice and clean shop but the lady cooking was eating chips or batter with her fingers as she was frying the fish. Its a small shop with people a bit crammed in while waiting.
