We have just left this delightful place. I have been in a few times and it always seemed packed to the rafters. Tonight we managed to get in due to a quieter time after the school holidays and boy we were not disappointed. The food choice was well thought out. I chose the Galloway platter which was a mix of smoked meats such as duck and venison. Very well presented and tasted very good but the prize goes to the main course.... the 8 oz Flat Iron Steak!!! Amazing. It was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth. Yum yum. Bravo. Couldn't managed a pudding as the portion sizes were above adequate. A very pleasant evening with real ale and good grub. Very friendly staff. Would highly recommend. Thank you House O Hill we will be back.

Stopped at the campsite just up the road and made this our local during our stay. Lovely friendly staff, very welcoming and accommodating. Good selection of ales and spirits, lovely atmosphere, very relaxing. Starter of scallop, black pudding fritter and pork belly with a pea purée was delightful. Main course of venison pie, a proper pie with a bottom and a top! Skins on chips and veg, omg it was to die for. Eton mess for pud, top notch. What a little gem this place is, shame it’s so far away!! Thanks to Helen, Karen and the team.

Went stargazing - disappointing as it was cloudy - but had planned to eat here so just arrived earlier, hadn’t booked but got a table no problem, it was so good!! I had chicken pie and my partner had the venison, both top class! I had cheesecake which when it arrived I was put out how small it was, but it was so rich and delicious it was the perfect size! Very much recommend this place for fab food and really lovely staff

We went last night, when the power was down. All I can say is that the food was fantastic, the staff amazing and the atmosphere whilst not quite electric was made all the better with the candles and lights dotted around. You reassured our Coeliac daughter and everything we ordered was beautifully cooked and presented. First time coming here and certainly won't be the last!

Fabulous meals two weeks running. Asian platter was a taste delight, Mediterranean veg risotto beautifully cooked. Desserts with great contrast between sweet and sharp. (Missed the lime posset though!)

Excellent pub/hotel with very high food standards, nice decor and music. I had a steak burger which was great, and very good value . Top end food and service and great beer Had our grand daughter with us and she was instantly welcomed and her 5 year old needs seen to. We have moved reasonably locally and we fully intend to make this a place we return to regularly, add this to the stunning location and Glentrool and this is a winning combination . Steve

Brilliant welcome for us, the children and our Labrador. The food was gorgeous, a really lovely experience from start to finish, we will make a point of returning when in the area!

Maybe I was just lucky hitting the heat wave they were having which made riding around this beautiful part of the world on the Harley trike so much more enjoyable, but finding this place and staying for the whole week was an inspired choice. As others have said the food is spectacular - you're paying a premium for sure but this isn't standard pub fayre, it's possibly the best you've tasted anywhere. The location is pure peace and quiet apart from the birdlife. A gorgeous place to just sit outside and contemplate. It's also ideal for travelling all through the Galloway Forest Park or over to the coast. But maybe leaving the best 'til last is the hospitality and friendship of the people there. They simply couldn't do enough. There were tears in the eyes on the last night and I really didn't want to have to go home the following day - oh to be able to stay just one more night. Next time the weather may not be so kind, I'm sure, but their hospitality certainly will be (and, Helen, I'll take you up on that offer to show me around places to go if it is raining). A little part of my heart stayed behind with them.
