Only stopped in time to get a dessert and a cuppa, the staff were both very friendly and helpful; the dessert, lemon cheese cake with ice cream was to die for. I would definitely call in again hopefully for longer if I’m up that way again.
Only called in for a sandwich lunch.
I had the wonderful roast beef while my wife had the pork. Both were great. I topped mine off with a pint of sycamore gap, one of their own brewed beers and thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff were run ragged as it's a very busy place, but could not have been more helpful.
Lovely afternoon tea here , couldn't believe it was just £12.50 pp . Would def recommend people to try . Lovely staff and on a cold wintry day fire was welcoming x will be back
Last minute overnight stay! Fantastic place. Lovely beers. Ate here on the evening and it was delicious, breakfast was lovely. Room was beautiful, clearly well maintained and nipping clean. Bed was really comfy. The stars of the show are the staff, top notch. They work so hard, really friendly and can’t do enough for you.
Lovely spacious place. Limited menu but delicious food. Staff very friendly and helpful and a plus, you can take your dog in with you!
Was there last night for a xmas meal with a group of friends, excellent food couldn’t fault it, huge portions! Excellent fast service with lots of smiles , lovely decorated room, couldn’t fault it at all ,well done team Twicey!
Absolutely delicious Sunday lunch and extremely well looked after by very friendly and helpful staff. Catered really well for my Gluten Free diet, didn’t feel like anything was any trouble at all. Thank you all very much.
New to the area so thought I’d go for a drive and see what I can find. Got a coffee and juice then decided to get a spot of scran. Steak pie and veg, just what I needed. Couldn’t quite finish, pretty big portion. Two girls who served me both friendly and chatty, didn’t get there names I’m afraid.
The Sill is free to enter, you pay for the parking (number plate recognition). It's a great starting point for walks or stop on a walk.
Beautiful building, great view from the roof. Took us a little while before we found some of the plants, showed on the leaflet that grow on the roof. There were more than on first view seen.
Nice shop, we bought some beers as a present for family.
Was very interesting and useful. Thinks to learn for young and old would recommend to anyone who love the land and animals around them and care for the investment and what we do to take care of it. The sand pit was cool,I want one.
Great walk up to the Sycamore Gap from The Sill. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the confusing way that the cafe works, it is a wait to be seated affair which isn't well put across especially when you want to sit outside. The drinks weren't bad apart from the chai latte which apparently was a latte without coffee, but the cakes were mediocre and the scone was dry.

The staff here are so welcoming! It is a great place for kids to learn about the environment and environmental issues, whilst also having a cute little gift shop and cafe. The cafe food is SO GOOD. Staff are warm and polite, and the views are beautiful. A great place to stop off once you've done a bit of the wall for a relaxing coffee, or soup of the day. Great vegan options.
absolutely lovely place to visit scenery is amazing I advise wear walking boots though the trust looks after this place very well signs every where so you can't get lost couple of routes to take
We went onto the rooftop garden...the views were spectacular...we also went in the cafe and I bought a novel called Heaven field by L J Ross and the shop assistant told me how to visit the actual place...was amazing
A stunning centre and YHA from which to explore this amazing landscape ..do not miss it if you are interested in archaeology, the brilliant night sky, time out in nature with your family or by yourself, bring your bikes and enthusiasm for Roman Forts and the stunning remains, Hadrian's wall, thousands of Roman artefacts and the sheer pleasure of being outdoors in the fresh air walking in the footsteps of our ancestors.
Great site, lovely building, can even go on the roof. Excellent art exhibitions and play room. Good play area out the back. Didn't try the cafe but it smelt nice.
An excellent visitor centre.
The best Youth Hostel I have ever stayed at. We brought a group of 16 Yr3 students for a one night stay, whilst visiting Hadrian's Wall.
All of the staff were friendly and helpful, the food was superb and the rooms put me more in mind of a Premier Inn, than a Youth Hostel. Just about the only difference was the bunk beds, rather than singles or doubles
A great explanation centre, right next door to the wonderful natural geological feature of Great Whin Sill.
Absolutely brilliant place to visit. Large car park, cafe (very reasonably priced) a shop, lots to see. Walk on the roof, rather windy when we were there but worth it. Children will love the interactive experiences in the main area. The building itself is something else, all glass and metal and bright inside.
Brilliant place big car park & excellent cafe
Amazing views
The Sill is absolutely great. At first glance, the exhibitions seem small, but they are packed with educational information with plenty of it being interactive. The most impressive thing was the sand table and brilliant automated projection of changing topography.
Yes, you have to pay for parking, but it wasn't extortionate and the rest of the centre is free.
We were further impressed by the cafe, it was table service but the staff were unbelievably efficient and our order took very little time to arrive. Plenty of establishments could learn a lot from the attentiveness of the staff. Don't be put off by needing to be seated (other reviews have stated they left as they didn't want to wait), we were seated promptly and have had far longer waits when receiving counter service. In fact, we waited nearly 20 minutes at a notable service station the day before this visit, even though both cafes were a similar busyness (when taking into account size and staffing)
Great place to park for a walk along Hadrian's Wall to Housesteads and back, or just to do a couple of miles or so and see the 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' famous 'Sycamore Tree Gap' - see my photo. Housesteads is one of the best preserved areas of these Roman fortifications. The Sill centre has plenty of car parking, a great coffee shop plus gift shop, toilets etc. Pay for parking based on duration you stay (ANPR timing of your entry to car park)
Note: you can walk to Housesteads on the wall route but there is an easier path south of the wall too.
The cafe do not allow dogs.
The food is very well prepared, is filling and has a great taste.
The exploration area for the children is excellent.
Witting on the balcony on the rain in stunningly beautiful.
A great place to park and visit. Dogs can sit outside of the cafe but there is no shelter in the Rain. Staff extremely helpful and they have a free to use toilet
Lovely visit to The Sill, interesting exhibitions. Cafe area has fabulous views with a great selection on the menu. Staff helpful and friendly.
Nice visitor centre with a good cafe and gift shop featuring some well made local beers and spirits. Great also as a 'base' for exploring the local beauty spots and terrain
Parked at The Sill for our walk to Sycamore Gap and didn't even realise you could go inside (last time we came we thought it was just the Youth Hostel, oops). It's a lovely walk around inside with lots of beautiful artwork to see and had a huge interactive display that my little one loved. Really enjoyed our look around. Parking is pay on exit and facilities were clean! Enjoy that you can go onto the rooftop and see for miles around you.
