After a lot of e mail communication about a past bad experience, I finally discovered that there were a new team running the place We went for lunch today. Set menu with a variety of choices My starter was crab My main was a mixed beef and lamb undated lunch. Both courses were delicious, well presented and well cooked and flavoured. Desserts were sensational. Mine was a Malva dessert, one I had never heard of, it apparently is from the head chefs South African homeland. It was a light sponge with gorgeous toffee sauce, so well worth the journey on its own. My partner also loved her chocolate dessert too. Staff are very attentive and chef comes out and engages with customers, a wholly memorable experience Well worth the trip!

I have to say that you excelled yourselves with the new festive menu. The food was amazing. We dined last night with friends... Upstairs.. Couldn't have asked for a nicer evening. Good service, amazing food and lots of it, great selection of wine and cocktails. Brilliant evening. Thank you

Under new management this is the best the food has been in our opinion. Good service too. The crab avocado starter was superb and the steak perfectly cooked. Cocktail’s great too!

Been coming here on and off over the last few years. Decided to have a Sunday lunch birthday celebration here for family and the food was great. Service was good and all our food came out together and was hot which is sometimes hard when serving a large group. Lovely touch that the chef came out also. He especially did a lovely job that day. Have been for afternoon tea also which wasn’t as good however.

Visited here 1st Oct 23 for lunch based on a friends recommendation. Oh my word !! What a hidden gem this place is. Staff were very attentive, swift and polite. Food was fantastic, plenty of it and cooked well. (Chef please note roast potatoes were a bit dry inside for future reference), plenty of choice and lovely cocktails. We will definitely be coming back for sure for your French night on a Thursday. Keep up the good work - this is definitely worth a visit if you haven’t been yet !!!

Lovely little gem and well worth the visit. I have to be honest in my review so although it may not be all praise and flowers, I would definitely go back and am happy to recommend it. On arrival, the hostess was lovely, attentive, did a coat check in and escorted me to our table. Unfortunately they did not check for allergens and I carry an epi pen 🥺. Upon sitting down, the tea cup was dirty and visibly so. I asked for a replacement and the person bringing it was carrying it with her thumb inside the cup 😔. The cup also had a chip where I'd sip from. I just couldn't be bothered to ask for a second replacement. Due to the not checking on allergies, when the food arrived, it had a few items I am allergic to. I had to swap them out with my friend or just leave it. I have an egg allergy and a raisin allergy and sadly the majority of what was on my platter contained egg. That which I could actually eat was lovely. Definitely worth checking out and I would go back despite the above.

The best Sunday roast I've ever had. Chose turkey, it was super succulent and delicious and came with the most perfectly cooked and beautifully seasoned green vegetables. Lovely!

Good food and drink. Some good deals available on different nights. We had a buy-a-gift voucher for a 3 course meal for two. The voucher covers starters up to £9 and mains up to £23 and I am not sure about dessert but around £8. If you choose something more expensive just pay the extra, oh and it covers your first drink each. I would recommend it as a night out. Only gripe is the bathroom and gardens need some TLC. P.S. pork belly bites with hoisin sauce and sesame seeds was awesome 😋

The food was quite nice and the selection of gin was fantastic. I do find the concept of pre-order for an afternoon tea peculiar, however it did look delicious. In saying that, we then ended up with the Salmon and the Gnocchi for our mains which were equally great. The starters (pictured) were also great.

Reserved judgement on our first visit as the mains were hit and miss. We returned for the roast dinner and were very satisfied with the food. We were seated upstairs and found the decor dull and outdated. Both wines that we asked for were not available but we were at the tail end of a long bank holiday so maybe this can be excused. The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff cannot be faulted and certainly lifted the review by one star.

Nice modern clean surroundings upstairs. Varied menu for a Sunday, but opted for the Sunday Roast, cooked to perfection with a very good quality/quantity balance

I was a little dubious when I read reviews after having booked for the set lunch menu, however I was delightfully surprised. This is an old beamed building decorated to enhance the features with beautifully comfortable large leather chairs. The staff were polite and attentive. The food was delicious and made with top class ingredients and seasoned just right. Yhere is a large garden at the rear with tables should you wish to sit outside. Behind the garden is a large free council car park.

Food was delicious (for the most part, one starter out of the 10 on our table was overdone and barely edible but they more than made up for that with the mains and puddings). Portion sizes were generous, service very good.

First time I’d visited, we sat out in the garden. The food & drinks were brilliant, the staff were super friendly. It was unfortunate we had a really long waiting time for our food, it seemed a little short staffed. Overall I would definitely go again as the food was really nice.

Spent a lovely afternoon at Hengistthis afternoon. Service was excellent but outdone by the food. Sugar glazed goats cheese is probably the tastiest starter I've ever had and there was nothing but praise for all the dishes had by six of us today. Well done chef

Had an afternoon tea ,to celebrate a 75th birthday. Food was excellent, and plenty of it . The negative was that we had to wait 1/2 hour for the food to come out, especially as 1 guest had to leave to go to work. Plenty of tea shame the first lot was cold. Service was excellent especially as they were busy . Will be back as this a favourite place for Afternoon Tea.
