Locals eye view, this pub is one of the oldest buildings in Ambleside. A good traditional pub serving a good variety of beers by hard working friendly staff. Yes it has a small kitchen but what they serve is good standard fayre.
Traditional pub, we hadn't been in for a while, when we stay we always go in this pub. However it was starting to look very tatty....but NOT anymore. ..it is now looking fab and it hasn't been spoiled by making it to modern, it has kept it's charm but is now very well furnished. The beer and the food were always good and that hasn't changed.
Excellent meal value for money. A lovely pint to boot excellent staff very friendly wonderful ambiance will definitely come again
Great relaxing pub. Fantastic prices and really friendly staff. We found this pub on night one of our long weekend and visited every evening thereafter. Highly recommend.
Lovely Place with attentive staff and tasty food. Dog Friendly too. Excellent.
Came here for the 1st time on sunday, it was honestly the best Sunday dinner ive had for years, meat just fell apart and home made yorkie puddings were amazing i asked for 2 which was no problem im already planning next visit
Great atmosphere real pub. Great wine beer food and hospitality
Great little local pub. Friendly staff and great food
Fantastic staff could not be more friendly
Lovely pub and good cask ale
Great little spot in Ambleside with a decent selection of beers and a fairly priced menu, slightly less expensive and more laid back than some of the surrounding restaurants. The lasagna was delicious!
Sister pub to the Dog & Gun in Keswick so you know the beer will be 👌🏼. They have a house pale brewed by Greene King which is pretty decent but most of the other ales are from South Cumbria and definitely worth a try.
Great pub, great food, friendly staff, and very quick service. It's definitely a place which you should not skip if going to Ambleside.
Good food, beer and service. Very busy pub, just after the new year. Would recommend.
Lovely pub to dry off next to the roaring fire, especially as it's now got the Christmas decorations up! Serves the wonderful Goulash that has made the Dog & Gun a must visit location when in Keswick. When we discovered that pub was closed for refurbishment we had to make a trip to Ambleside to get our fix of Goulash. Nice selection of local beers.
The food and service were really good 🌟
It was just a bit too noisy for our liking
Has vegan/vegetarian options
This little pub is amazing! food and service so good came back two nights in a row! The nachos are AMAZING honestly the best nachos I have ever had. The food is so tasty and its service with a smile. I couldn’t recommend the place enough. Staff are friendly and engaging and deserve a great deal of praise. (Btw love the singing in the kitchen !)
Great traditional pub, friendly atmosphere and one of the more reasonably priced establishments in Ambleside.
Staff were welcoming. Though we don’t have a dog ourselves they were welcome in the pub.
It was good to chat with other like minded customers about our exploits on the fells. A real friendly bunch.
A great night had by all…. So much so we missed the last bus back to Grasmere, we called a taxi (Amber taxis) it took us by surprise as it arrived in a couple of minutes after the call, great service.

Visited a couple of times during our hols for beers, great selection including dark beers. Very comfortable traditional pub, great friendly staff and food looked very good. It is very popular especially outside in the sitting area - deffo recommend visit x
Lovely pub, very dog friendly so fantastic for any walkers with 4 legged friends, they sell a good assortment for dogs to keep them content while at your feet.
Food is good, nothing outstanding.
Gents bathroom is very amusing with the floor going all sorts of ways when you go in, definitely not the best after a few!
It is a shame the app ordering does not work here and the hunters chicken breast was a bit small for my liking but very tasty.
We had lunch here on the 25th April 2025. We hadn't booked, but were made very welcome. Our lunch was freshly cooked, and arrived without much of a wait. We enjoyed our meal, which was really delicious.
Excellent traditional pub with very friendly welcoming staff and a good menu. Serves a variety of real ales and gins amongst other things. Nice atmosphere and popular with the local community.
Probably the best steak & ale pie I've had anywhere. Lovely atmosphere and whole bar full of decent, well kept ale. Would thoroughly recommend.
One of the busier pubs in town, usually full of visitors having a pint after a hike. Good selection of beers including some great cask ales. They serve food, but I've not eaten here.
Inside is quite crowded which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you like your pubs (I like a cosy pub), very dog friendly.
Poped in for a drink on a visit to the local area. Great relaxing atmosphere. Great staff. Great selection of drinks. Comfortable seating couldn't ask for much more. Can't wait to try in the summer. Very dog friendly.
