It was very busy when we were there which I suppose explains why we waited almost an hour for our food! Upon saying that I have to say the Lasagne was the best I have ever eaten :) staff very friendly. The roast lunches looked excellent too :)
Excellent service, food and atmosphere. Would highly recommend it. We'd ordered a variety of dishes in our party and each one was delicious! Highly recommend!
We booked online for my partner's birthday - just a table for 3. We arrived to find they had decorated the table, which was a lovely touch. The food was delicious, my steak was cooked perfectly! We had starters and mains, but didn't have room for sweet! The staff were friendly and attentive. Thanks very much for a lovely evening Hannah, Reece (sorry got your name wrong on Trip Adviser) and the lovely chap behind the bar who's name I didn't catch x
Lovely food, lovely feel to the place, lovely staff, great selection of drinks and all reasonably well priced, we love this place and visit when ever we can, 2 young kids are no bother to the staff either as they make us feel at home. I advise booking in advance though so you aren't disappointed, back again soon! 👍
Visited last night (19th Feb) Amazing food! Great atmosphere, staff really friendly. Defo visiting again 10/10! Highly recommend the Lamb Duo!!
Been a few times and never had a bad meal. We really enjoyed the food , staff were very attentive and the place had a lovely informal atmosphere.
One of our favourite places to eat. The staff are always welcoming and friendly, the atmosphere is a relaxed happy one and the food is wonderful. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
Great food , lovely staff, cookie bake with sticky toffee pudding ice cream is amazing
Recommend highly 😀
Great atmosphere! Been coming here for decades and have always loved it. It had a face-lift not too long ago but it still retains a lovely pub atmosphere.
Great food options and drinks selection. Very friendly service and Paul is always very welcoming!
Highly recommend!
Spent bank holiday Jan 2nd 2023 here with my family for our last lunch out. I'm giving it a 4 star for its fabulous location, inspiring building and stunning, warm interior, it's the perfect country pub.
The food was good and very tasty, only thing to mention for me was I would have liked a little more flavor.
Kids meals are very good and they have a good choice for children.
The service began very well indeed and I must add always has been in the past, although when we asked for the desert menu it took an easy 10 minutes to arrive, then when no one approached and a further 15 minutes past we decided to get the bill and leave and not have desert after all as we expected a lengthy wait. I will note the pub was not over busy at this point and I feel this was only a slight oversight from staff on the floor.
Finally the beer, local, and tasty in particular the Big Tree amber ale.
Worth a visit.
One of my favorite country pubs. Loads of parking spaces, very cozy ambiances and the food is pretty good as well! I love that they offer a mini cake with a coffee for dessert as an option because sometimes that is all I can eat after a big Sunday lunch.
Been here a few times, had a nice meal, great atmosphere.
Amazing pub in a very idyllic location close to Dunham Massey park. The young owner who lives on site (lucky guy) made us feel incredibly welcome and we spend a few hours over a lovely leisurely lunch in the sun in the front garden.
Highly recommended and Hasta la vista 🙏
Had lunch with family at the Axe and Cleaver the last week in August, following a birthday.
Not been there for at least a year.
It appears to be under new management.
The menu much improved, along with the chef.
Had a very good lunch, the food was delicious. The sea bass was outstanding.
Good service.
Let's hope it stays that way.
Very lovely, would definitely come again. Great menu, good options, very affordable, kind staff.
Only feedback was my partners mushroom wellington only had 4 mushrooms in. Other than that, top notch.
As a family, we really love this restaurant and have been visiting for many years. We decided to book a evening meal on the spur of the moment and we were so glad we did. The evening was top notch. The food was excellent, the staff were attentive and lovely and the atmosphere was cozy. Such a lovely evening. Well recommended. A good varied menu of food and drink. Definitely one of our favourite places to dine out. Thank you.
Alyson and Karl did an excellent job keeping up with our party of 16. Neil and James in the kitchen delivered an amazing rib of beef, and Venison roast (specials board). The pie was brilliant. The 5 children all enjoyed their meals.
Thanks team.
Delicious Sunday lunch and sea bass and scallops. Benn, our server, was very attentive and friendly. Fair prices for what we had and good sized portions.
Wonderful experience at the axe and cleaver today, - fantastic value for money and more importantly me an absolute 5 star service from Denise who looked after us today. Nothing was too much and she made us all feel so welcome. The axe and cleaver are lucky to have you on board!
Fantastic country pub with excellent range of menu and amazing food. Have visited several times recently whilst in the area on business and all meals have been truly excellent.
Not been to this place for a number of years but on return it did not disappoint. Fabulous early lunch, booked on line we had wonderful service from staff. The food was superb. No waiting time it came out piping hot with lovely service.
Great place I mean really enjoyable place to eat. Enjoy it. We will be back with no danger.
It's a nice pub but they only take card! We were there for a gathering recently, ordered drinks at the bar and was faced with some embarrassment as we only had cash on us! A member of our party had their card so it was alright in the end, but it's irked me! There were a lot of us, 50 or more of us, and at least a dozen only had cash.
It's a growing trend to withdraw cash and make budgets at the start of each month, dividing amounts into budgeting wallets, it's grown in popularity as it helps some people actually have something left at the end of the month and be more conscious of what you're actually spending.
I'm not sure I buy the explanations of going cashless to save the pub money, surely it costs more, I've worked in several businesses where you actually pay fees to the card service provider! I don't know whether this is a pub decision or a brewery decision, but I can only suspect that it actually only saves them time not having to cash up nightly and make bank run deposits.
It wouldn't put me off coming here, we've been here loads and loads, we'd just be better prepared next time. But it seems ever so slightly discriminatory towards people who are unable to pay with card or who may not have a debit card.
Wonderful pub. We've been here many times and it always feels like a special place to visit. There's always a warm welcome and the food is excellent.
It's also close to lots of lovely walks.
Lovely country pub. It was quite busy but not crowded as could sit outside under the trees - was told 30-40 minute wait for food but was much quicker than expected. Two of our group choose the vegan option and both dishes very good.
Only ever been for lunch here but it's a great place to come nestled in Dunham village surrounded by countryside. It suits it's surroundings. Good service, solid menu and reasonable selection of drinks. Fine for parents, grandparents and kids. Chef and Brewer chain of pubs. Can eat outside.

Absolutely great experience. Arrived for late lunch with our 4 year old and some friends.
Staff were amazing, especially with our 4 year old. Going the extra mile to appease his tantrums with an ice lolly and even nipping to get vimto for him to drink.
To match this incredible service the food was great. Everyone had a lovely meal and it was priced really affordably too. Could not recommend this place enough.
