I visited The George for their tasting menu in 2021, and since they seem to have done more collaborations and one off evenings, which I can’t wait to attend again! A bit of a trek from Sheffield but worth it for sure. Wonderful food and excellent value for what you get. Definitely a premium dining experience without the premium price tag. Can’t wait to go back again.
We visited Friday and had the tasting menu. Food was phenomenal, atmosphere was fantastic and Graham was a wonderful host. We met a lovely couple and another gentlemen and chatted and laughed the evening away. We loved it so much we drove the hour away to go back for he Sunday roast menu with the children. We were not disappointed! We will be definatley be back again very soon.
I came here with my non foodie husband and he was blown away by it. I was worried he wouldn't enjoy it as it was a set menu but I needn't have been. The flavours in everything set the taste buds tingling and our only regret was not going for the 9 course tasting menu. Who knew cabbage could be so moreish?! Excellent service too and great value too.
We are so pleased that we went to The George for Sunday lunch. It was absolutely amazing! The food was stunning and the service felt very genuine. It was one of the best meals we ever had. This restaurant is a reason for us to return to Alstonefield. Thank you so much for looking after us!
If you want bland pub grub and a £1.50 pint of beer after your annual hike this is not the place for you. It has fallen out of favour with some infrequent "hikers" who are scathing of the business model of this amazing little place (which has to pay its huge overheads and so can't rely on once a year hikers who want lots, for very little) - seems as if I should add "campers" to this too
Edited: I think it was our fifth visit yesterday and the food just gets better and better and better… It is on another level entirely now, I don't know why it hasn't got a star, it is certainly worthy of one, or two. We both had every one of the savoury dishes on the small plates menu, and the flavours were mind blowing. Probably the best duck I have ever eaten, it was so flavoursome I cannot begin to describe. And the beef tartare dish… Just wow! But the potato dish in particular ....how they can ram so much flavour into a potato dish is beyond me. One of the best meals we have ever eaten, maybe THE best? We will definitely be back. The photos I posted are from previous visits - we were too busy enjoying the food to take photos this time
A completely unexpected find after 300 miles of solo riding on the motorbike. It's an interesting taster menu but all the food was excellently selected, cooked and presented. More than that, it tasted great too! I am definitely returning here at some point and staying (again) at Smithy's across the road. Perhaps in different clothes next time though.
The food was amazing, I would say 1 michelin starred. We came last year and this year was better than last.... The catch of the day was my favourite although it was hard to pick
By far our favourite restaurant in Derbyshire. Fine dining with a lovely, warm, informal atmosphere and the food is of a far superior standard to a number of Michelin starred restaurants we have visited (in my opinion) The chef is a real talent and you can see how passionate the owner is about the produce. A must visit for anyone visiting or living nearby
My wife and I booked a table as a celebration for exam results. This charming and accomplished restaurant excelled on every level and all eight courses! The wine accompaniment was exceptional, as were the knowledgeable and attentive front of house staff. Highly recommended eatery in the Peak District.
I dined in at The George twice this summer - once soon after the indoor restrictions were lifted and then a little later in July.
The first time we had a lighter lunch with a selection of wonderful small plates, some champagne and a gorgeous dessert wine.
On our second visit we had the 7 course tasting menu and were absolutely blown away by the quality of the locally sourced ingredients and the flavours of every dish. My partner isn't keen on certain types of fish and so the chef offered to swap the seafood course for a ham dish which was very much appreciated.
The beef dripping butter and bread to start and the elderflower jelly with strawberries were particularly memorable.
Our dog was welcome to sit in the bar area with us and we had a brilliant time.
We often camp nearby and love to look forward to Friday night fish and chips when we arrive.
Absolute bliss and we'll be coming back very soon!
Had an amazing meal last Thursday. We had the 9 course taster menu. The food was delicious with the attention to detail and flavour. The service was very good with an explanation of what we were going to eat and advice what to drink with the menu.
Would thoroughly recommend The George for an excellent meal. Thank you
I'm not a fan of tasting menus but that at The George, last night, was outstanding. (I feel that restaurants should always offer an a la carte alternative.) All of the dishes were well conceived (I forgive the pumpkin in one of the deserts that we both felt was not ideal) and excellently prepared. The wine selection was well chosen and very fairly priced. Mine Host was most welcoming and his young niece, who served us most dutifully, was delightfully shy. A wonderful pre-Xmas treat.
Excellent food and service. We thoroughly enjoyed the 9 course tasting menu. The staff were very knowledgeable about the dishes and it was clear that the chef had a passion for his creations.
Superb food, based on innovation, local and seasonal produce. The George is a destination that deserves all of its awards and accolades; for its wonderful people, atmosphere and dining. Accommodating for groups of all sizes; your experience would be wonderful - whatever the occasion. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend and return, in the future.
So, we went for fathers day dinner at the George at Alstonfield, Peak District. My experience was that the food felt like it was lovingly made by the chef. They sourced local ingredients and even had their own vegetable plot, their poultry and even bees. So already I was won over. The actual location is slightly remote but worth finding. The decor itself had a lot character and is truly old England. Reminds me of the story books my mum read to me as a child. The food was very good to taste. The vegetables cooked aldente as is to expected and the red cabbage was sweet. They had 5 courses which is above what most restaurants offer. Portion of all sides where small but adequate. The presentation was perfect. The main was very tasty and I did not need any condiments or seasoning. Some argue the portions are small but considering you're having 5 courses all together I would say you shouldn't leave hungry. The owner, Graham was very kind and the whole ambience was romantic and memorable. So final say is that I would recommend it to everyone who is in the area. Definitely book a meal here. You wont regret it. I will come back!
PRICE: We paid £35 per head which to be is VERY reasonable for the effort they put in to the 5 courses!
Drinks: we had a bottle of champagne at £42 which was very reasonably priced! So, hurry up and visit the George!
Any improvements? I struggled to find any issues but as the devils advocate, I'll say maybe shave off the grizzled of the beef and maybe a little bit more toast for the liver parfait.
A nice pub with a very small menu but top quality food. The menu is based on the local produce that is available. The ambience is unique as well. We took a detour to visit this place and was worth it.
The staff is excellent as well.
What a great evening….‘Collaboration’ dinner with Louisa Ellis (Masterchef finalist) alongside the George’s head chef Jordan Hemsil, two very talented young people who fed us superbly. From the moment we arrived it couldn’t have been better. The staff are the perfect balance of engaging, knowledgeable and attentive and made us feel like we were returning friends rather than paying guests. The wonderfully old and beautifully renovated building is the perfect setting for this upmarket, understated and innovative restaurant.
An incredible gastronomic experience.... charming heritage building in idyllic village, seamless yet friendly service and outstanding food. I can't recommend The George highly enough. The fish and lobster were just outstanding and a real surprise in the Peak District.
The best meal I've had in the Peaks and across the UK. Lovely spot, it's unassuming but brilliant!
